The Power of the Transference
2006
Donald Sandner, \"The Power of the Transference,\" in The San Francisco Jung the San Francisco Jung Institute Library Journal, Institute Library Journal, 2006, 25:2, 15-27. Transference is shown to be at the heart of what we do as analysts, defi ning us and giving us common cause with others who also consciously use the transference. Th e transference takes its energy from a projection of kinship libido onto the analyst, the energy that creates the nuclear family, and keeps it going. It is contained and channeled by the incest barrier, which maintains the structure of the family and is also a natural component of analytic therapy. Its violation destroys the integrity of the family and therapy. Th is energy of the transference is traced through Jung's three tier system of individuation, with its diff ering needs for containment and maintenance at each level.
