Storytelling and the Mexican American child: A qualitative study on how preadolescent Mexican Americans respond to cultural storytelling
With the increasing population of Mexican Americans in the United States, it is becoming more important for those in the fields of education and psychology to understand cultural differences when working with this population. Storytelling has been common cultural source of entertainment, solace, and education since the beginning of recorded history. This study has attempted to discover the experiences of Mexican American preadolescents as they understand the differences between traditional Mexican stories and traditional Anglo American stories. The findings show that psychologists and others may utilize more culturally appropriate stories (including thematic and plot elements of fear, spirituality, and traditional Mexican cultural beliefs) when working with Mexican American children in order to attain specified goals with literacy and mental health.
The princess and the frog
A re-imagining of the classic fairy tale, set in New Orleans and involving a hard-working would-be restaurant owner, a carefree foreign prince, and a sinister magician.
A Qualitative Study of the Latter Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Patients Living With Chronic Pain
This qualitative study examined the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the lives of patients living with chronic pain (CP). Patients referred to an interdisciplinary pain management program between July and December of 2021 were asked to respond to the question: “How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect your life?” Fifty-four patients provided comments in response to this question. The comments were analyzed using an inductive approach. Ten themes emerged: (1) psychological state, (2) limitations on social life and activities, (3) minimal to no effect, (4) beliefs and opinions associated with COVID-19, (5) family dynamics, (6) healthcare disruptions, (7) pandemic-related fear, (8) changes in work, (9) change in pain, and (10) getting COVID-19. These themes mirror those found during the onset of the pandemic, with the addition of theme #4. Themes demonstrate the challenges experienced by individuals living with CP, in addition to new developments in the latter portion of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important to understand the ramifications of shutdowns, so we are better able to address issues that occur in their aftermath.
Evidence for the Higgs-boson Yukawa coupling to tau leptons with the ATLAS detector
A bstract Results of a search for H → ττ decays are presented, based on the full set of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC during 2011 and 2012. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 4.5 fb −1 and 20.3 fb −1 at centre-of-mass energies of s = 7 TeV and s = 8 TeV respectively. All combinations of leptonic ( τ → ℓ ν ν ¯ with ℓ = e, μ ) and hadronic ( τ → hadrons ν ) tau decays are considered. An excess of events over the expected background from other Standard Model processes is found with an observed (expected) significance of 4.5 (3.4) standard deviations. This excess provides evidence for the direct coupling of the recently discovered Higgs boson to fermions. The measured signal strength, normalised to the Standard Model expectation, of μ  = 1. 43 − 0.37 + 0.43 is consistent with the predicted Yukawa coupling strength in the Standard Model.
Wreck-It Ralph
A misunderstood video game villain wants nothing more than to be the good guy for a change. But when Ralph finally gets his chance, will it mean \"Game Over\" for every game in the arcade?
Electron performance measurements with the ATLAS detector using the 2010 LHC proton-proton collision data
Detailed measurements of the electron performance of the ATLAS detector at the LHC are reported, using decays of the Z , W and J / ψ particles. Data collected in 2010 at are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of almost 40 pb −1 . The inter-alignment of the inner detector and the electromagnetic calorimeter, the determination of the electron energy scale and resolution, and the performance in terms of response uniformity and linearity are discussed. The electron identification, reconstruction and trigger efficiencies, as well as the charge misidentification probability, are also presented.
Search for direct third-generation squark pair production in final states with missing transverse momentum and two b-jets in SQRTs = 8 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
(ProQuest: ... denotes formulae and/or non-USASCII text omitted; see image) Abstract The results of a search for pair production of supersymmetric partners of the Standard Model third-generation quarks are reported. This search uses 20.1 fb^sup -1^ of pp collisions at ... TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The lightest bottom and top squarks (... and ... respectively) are searched for in a final state with large missing transverse momentum and two jets identified as originating from b-quarks. No excess of events above the expected level of Standard Model background is found. The results are used to set upper limits on the visible cross section for processes beyond the Standard Model. Exclusion limits at the 95 % confidence level on the masses of the third-generation squarks are derived in phenomenological supersymmetric R-parity-conserving models in which either the bottom or the top squark is the lightest squark. The ... is assumed to decay via ... and the ... via ..., with undetectable products of the subsequent decay of the ... due to the small mass splitting between the ... and the ...
