Optimal Incorporation of Intermittent Renewable Energy Storage Units and Green Hydrogen Production in the Electrical Sector
This paper presents a mathematical programming approach for the strategic planning of hydrogen production from renewable energies and its use in electric power generation in conventional technologies. The proposed approach aims to determine the optimal selection of the different types of technologies, electrolyzers and storage units (energy and hydrogen). The approach considers the implementation of an optimization methodology to select a representative data set that characterizes the total annual demand. The economic objective aims to determine the minimum cost, which is composed of the capital costs in the acquisition of units, operating costs of such units, costs of production and transmission of energy, as well as the cost associated with the emissions generated, which is related to an environmental tax. A specific case study is presented in the Mexican peninsula and the results show that it is possible to produce hydrogen at a minimum sale price of 4200$/tonH2, with a total cost of $ 5.1687 × 106 and 2.5243 × 105 tonCO2eq. In addition, the financial break-even point corresponds to a sale price of 6600 $/tonH2. The proposed model determines the trade-offs between the cost and the emissions generated.
Longitudinal study of the mcr-1 gene prevalence in Spanish food-producing pigs from 1998 to 2021 and its relationship with the use of polymyxins
Background Resistance to colistin was an uncommon phenomenon traditionally linked to chromosome point mutations, but since the first description of a plasmid-mediated colistin-resistance in late 2015, transmissible resistance to colistin has become a Public Health concern. Despite colistin is considered as a human last resort antibiotic, it has been commonly used in swine industry to treat post-weaning diarrhoea in piglets. However, the progressively increase of colistin resistance during the last decade led to the Spanish Medicines and Healthcare Products Agency (AEMPS) to launch a strategic and voluntary plan aimed to reduce colistin consumption in pig production. Our longitudinal study (1998–2021) aimed to evaluate the trend of colistin resistance mediated through the mcr-1 mobile gene in Spanish food-producing pig population and compare it with published polymyxin sales data in veterinary medicine to assess their possible relationships. Results The first mcr-1 positive sample was observed in 2004, as all samples from 1998 and 2002 were mcr-1 PCR-negative. We observed a progressive increase of positive samples from 2004 to 2015, when mcr-1 detection reached its maximum peak (33/50; 66%). From 2017 (27/50; 54%) to 2021 (14/81; 17%) the trend became downward, reaching percentages significantly lower than the 2015 peak ( p  < 0.001). The abundance of mcr-1 gene in PCR-positive samples showed a similar trend reaching the highest levels in 2015 (median: 6.6 × 10 4 mcr-1 copies/mg of faeces), but decreased significantly from 2017 to 2019 (median 2.7 × 10 4 , 1.2 × 10 3 , 4.6 × 10 2 mcr-1 copies/mg of faeces for 2017, 2018 and 2019, respectively), and stabilizing in 2021 (1.6 × 10 2 mcr-1 copies/mg of faeces) with similar values than 2019. Conclusions Our study showed the decreasing trend of colistin resistance associated to mcr-1 gene, after a previous increase from among 2004–2015, since the European Medicines Agency and AEMPS strategies were applied in 2016 to reduce colistin use in animals, suggesting a connection between polymyxin use and colistin resistance. Thus, these plans could have been effective in mcr-1 reduction, reaching lower levels than those detected in samples collected 17 years ago, when resistance to colistin was not yet a major concern.
Energy Storage: From Fundamental Principles to Industrial Applications
The increasing global energy demand and the transition toward sustainable energy systems have highlighted the importance of energy storage technologies by ensuring efficiency, reliability, and decarbonization. This study reviews chemical and thermal energy storage technologies, focusing on how they integrate with renewable energy sources, industrial applications, and emerging challenges. Chemical Energy Storage systems, including hydrogen storage and power-to-fuel strategies, enable long-term energy retention and efficient use, while thermal energy storage technologies facilitate waste heat recovery and grid stability. Key contributions to this work are the exploration of emerging technologies, challenges in large-scale implementation, and the role of artificial intelligence in optimizing Energy Storage Systems through predictive analytics, real-time monitoring, and advanced control strategies. This study also addresses regulatory and economic barriers that hinder widespread adoption, emphasizing the need for policy incentives and interdisciplinary collaboration. The findings suggest that energy storage will be a fundamental pillar of the sustainable energy transition. Future research should focus on improving material stability, enhancing operational efficiency, and integrating intelligent management systems to maximize the benefits of these technologies for a resilient and low-carbon energy infrastructure.
Analysis of Process Intensification Impact on Circular Economy in Levulinic Acid Purification Schemes
This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of levulinic acid purification schemes from a circular economy perspective, integrating resource-based indicators with economic and environmental metrics. Twelve alternatives, ranging from conventional distillation sequences to intensified hybrid systems, were assessed using indicators such as Relative Material Impact, total annual cost, Eco-Indicator 99, fuel demand, and CO2 emissions. The novelty of this work lies in extending the assessment beyond purification infrastructure to include upstream systems that supply energy demand, such as fuel extraction and steam generation. The configurations considered incorporate thermal couplings, dividing wall columns, and decanters, which influence energy efficiency, process complexity, and resource depletion. Among these, the TDWS-D configuration (Thermally Coupled Double Dividing Wall Column System with Decanter) exhibits the highest values in DMR, TAC, and CO2 emissions, driven by its elevated energy demand and complex infrastructure. Conversely, the TCS2 configuration (Thermally Coupled Sequence, featuring selective heat integration between distillation columns) achieves the lowest impact across all metrics, demonstrating that selective and strategic intensification (rather than maximalist design) can yield superior sustainability outcomes. Across all scenarios, the boiler stage was identified as the main contributor to material depletion, followed by fuel extraction and purification equipment. Notably, some conventional designs proved superior to intensified ones in terms of circularity, challenging the assumption that intensification inherently guarantees sustainability. Overall, the integration of circular economy indicators enables a multidimensional evaluation framework that supports more responsible and resource-efficient process design.
Olive Pomace and Soybean-Sunflower Acid Oils as Alternative Fat Sources in European Seabass ( Dicentrarchus labrax) Diets: Effects on Performance, Digestibility and Flesh Fatty Acid Composition and Quality Parameters
The effects of dietary inclusion of soybean-sunflower and olive pomace acid oils on growth, digestibility and flesh composition were studied in European seabass. Eight diets were fed for 100 days (101.37 ± 0.33 g initial weight, mean ± SD), differing in the added fat source (25% fish oil, 75% experimental oil): S (crude soybean oil), SA (soybean-sunflower acid oil), O (crude olive pomace oil) or OA (olive pomace acid oil); 3 blends: S-O, S-OA, SA-OA at a 1:1 ratio; and a diet containing only fish oil (F) as a control. Animals fed OA showed the worst performance among dietary treatments, with the lowest weight, specific growth ratio, average daily gain and the highest feed conversion ratio (p < 0.01). In contrast, other diets including acid oils did not impair performance. Acid oil diets did not affect the apparent digestibility of dry matter, crude protein or total fatty acids (p > 0.05), but a lower digestibility of lipids and saturated fatty acids was observed (p < 0.001). Flesh composition and fatty acid profile were not affected by the high dietary free FA content (p > 0.05). Hence the results suggest that the studied acid oils may potentially be used in fish diets although further studies are needed. Analgesic use — prevalence, biomonitoring and endocrine and reproductive effects

Here, Bernard Jégou and colleagues discuss the effects of mild analgesics (paracetamol and NSAIDs) on endocrine homeostasis and the reproductive system in animals and humans of both sexes, from fetal life to adulthood. Paracetamol and NSAIDs, in particular acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and ibuprofen, are among the most used and environmentally released pharmaceutical drugs. The differences in international trends in the sale and consumption of mild analgesics reflect differences in marketing, governmental policies, habits, accessibility, disease patterns and the age distribution of each population. Biomonitoring indicates ubiquitous and high human exposure to paracetamol and to salicylic acid, which is the main metabolite of acetylsalicylic acid. Furthermore, evidence suggests that analgesics can have endocrine disruptive properties capable of altering animal and human reproductive function from fetal life to adulthood in both sexes. Medical and public awareness about these health concerns should be increased, particularly among pregnant women.
Optimal Planning for Satisfying Future Electricity Demands Involving Simultaneously Economic, Emissions, and Water Concerns
The main problem related to the electricity generation planning is to ensure the total satisfaction of the demanded power along a period of time considering the population growth. Since the power demand is function of the growing population, there is a fast depletion of the environment caused mainly by the harmful emissions produced and the big amounts of water consumed in large power generation plants. Therefore, when a power supply system is planning, it is important to evaluate the negative outcomes that could be generated in the environment and to balance them with the economic performance of the system. In this work is presented an optimization approach for the strategic planning of electricity generation, the model seeks the optimal selection of technologies for the new power generation capacity (clean and conventional) which will satisfy the power demand in different scenarios in a specific period of time. The proposed multi-objective model is solved using the ε-constraint method for determining a trade-off between economic, harmful emissions (CO 2 , NO x , SO 2 and particle emissions), and water consumption through a set of Pareto diagrams. The power demand and the resources available for electricity generation in Mexico are presented as a case study, where it is possible to reduce up to 38.4% of emissions and 41.58% of water consumed, by minimizing these two factors, which has a significant environmental impact.
Prenatal pesticide exposure and otitis media during early childhood in the PELAGIE mother–child cohort
ObjectiveContemporary pesticides, such as triazines or organophosphates, possess immunotoxic properties. We aimed to determine whether prenatal environmental exposure to these current-use pesticides was associated with otitis media (OM) during the first 2 years of life among children from the PELAGIE mother–child cohort.MethodsThe PELAGIE cohort enrolled 3421 women at the beginning of pregnancy in Brittany (France). At the 2-year follow-up, 1505 families completed a self-administered questionnaire, including the domestic use of pesticides and consumption of organic diet during pregnancy and occurrences of OM in the child. Two health outcomes were considered: at least one OM and recurrent OM (at least three). Multivariate logistic regression models that adjusted for known risk factors of OM were performed. Metabolites of triazine herbicides and organophosphate insecticides measured in urine collected before the 19th week of gestation (248 mothers) were considered in a subgroup analysis. Multiple imputation was used to handle missing values for the covariates.ResultsChildren whose mothers reported an organic diet during pregnancy had a reduced risk of OM (at least one episode, p trend=0.01). No association was found between any outcome and residential proximity to crops. The presence in maternal urine of dealkylated triazine metabolites (OR=2.12 (1.01 to 4.47)) was positively associated with recurrent OM.ConclusionsTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to suggest a positive association between prenatal exposure to current-use pesticides and the occurrence of parent-reported OM in young children.
Pollution and physiological variability in gentoo penguins at two rookeries with different levels of human visitation
Human activity and specifically tourism has been increasing in Antarctica over the last few years. Few studies have examined the indirect effects of human visits on Antarctic penguin rookeries. This work aims to study the differences between a highly visited (Hannah Point) and a rarely visited (Devil's Point, Byers Peninsula) gentoo penguin rookery on Livingston Island. Our results suggest that potential indirect effects of human impact are observed in gentoo penguins at Hannah Point, a colony heavily visited by tourists. Penguins at Hannah Point showed a higher presence of heavy metals such as Pb and Ni and a higher number of erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities than penguins at Devil's Point. Immunological parameters showed different results depending on whether we consider the cellular response - the number of lymphocytes being higher in penguins from Hannah Point - or the humoral response - the level of immunoglobulins being higher in penguins from Devil's Point. Measurements of corticosterone levels in feathers and heterophil/lymphocyte (H/L) ratio in blood showed lower levels in the heavily visited rookery than in the rarely visited rookery. Finally, we did not detect Campylobacter jejuni, a bacteria potentially transmitted by humans in either of the populations and we did not find any difference in the prevalence of Campylobacter lari between the populations.
Can a deprivation index be used legitimately over both urban and rural areas?
Background Although widely used, area-based deprivation indices remain sensitive to urban–rural differences as such indices are usually standardised around typical urban values. There is, therefore, a need to determine to what extent available deprivation indices can be used legitimately over both urban and rural areas. Methods This study was carried out in Brittany, France, a relatively affluent region that contains deep rural areas. Among the 1,736 residential census block groups (IRIS) composing the Brittany region, 1,005 (57.9%) are rural. Four deprivation indices were calculated: two scores (Carstairs and Townsend) developed in the UK and two more recent French measures (Havard and Rey). Two standardisation levels were considered: all of the IRIS and only the urban IRIS of the region. Internal validity (Kappa coefficients and entropy values) and external validity (relationship with colorectal cancer screening [CCS] attendance) were investigated. Results Regardless of the deprivation measure used, wealthy areas are mostly clustered in the West and at the outskirts of major towns. Carstairs and Rey scores stand out by all evaluation criteria, capturing both urban and rural deprivation. High levels of agreements were found across standardisation levels (κ = 0.96). The distributions of deprivation scores were balanced across urban and rural areas, and high Shannon entropy values were observed in the capital city (≥0.93). Similar and significant negative trends were observed between CCS attendance and both deprivation indices, independent of the degree of urbanisation. Conclusions These results provide support, despite potential sociological objections, for the use of a compromise index that would facilitate comparisons and interpretations across urban and rural locations in public health research.
