Assessing Viral Abundance and Community Composition in Four Contrasting Regions of the Southern Ocean

We explored how changes of viral abundance and community composition among four contrasting regions in the Southern Ocean relied on physicochemical and microbiological traits. During January–February 2015, we visited areas north and south of the South Orkney Islands (NSO and SSO) characterized by low temperature and salinity and high inorganic nutrient concentration, north of South Georgia Island (NSG) and west of Anvers Island (WA), which have relatively higher temperatures and lower inorganic nutrient concentrations. Surface viral abundance (VA) was highest in NSG (21.50 ± 10.70 × 106 viruses mL−1) and lowest in SSO (2.96 ± 1.48 × 106 viruses mL−1). VA was positively correlated with temperature, prokaryote abundance and prokaryotic heterotrophic production, chlorophyll a, diatoms, haptophytes, fluorescent organic matter, and isoprene concentration, and was negatively correlated with inorganic nutrients (NO3−, SiO42−, PO43−), and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) concentrations. Viral communities determined by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA–polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) were grouped according to the sampling location, being more similar within them than among regions. The first two axes of a canonical correspondence analysis, including physicochemical (temperature, salinity, inorganic nutrients—NO3−, SiO42−, and dimethyl sulfoniopropionate -DMSP- and isoprene concentrations) and microbiological (chlorophyll a, haptophytes and diatom, and prokaryote abundance and prokaryotic heterotrophic production) factors accounted for 62.9% of the variance. The first axis, temperature-related, accounted for 33.8%; the second one, salinity-related, accounted for 29.1%. Thus, different environmental situations likely select different hosts for viruses, leading to distinct viral communities.

Background: The Career Construction Theory (CCT) focuses on the active role people can play when they create and design their singular paths for career success. Unlike other career guidance theories that focus their attention on identifying vocational interests or on the fit between the person and the work settings, CCT raises the possibility that people can go beyond the determinants of their life. This study tested the adaptation model proposed by Career Construction Theory. Consolidation of vocational identity is particularly important at the university stage, in which people decide their first steps about their professional future. Method: Participants were 1023 students from Spain and Brazil. The Spanish subsample was composed of 602 participants, 34% were men (N = 207), and 66% were women (N = 395). The average age was 21.69. The Brazilian subsample was composed by 421 participants, 39% were men (N = 165), and 61% were women (N = 256), with an average age of 24.84. The four dimensions in the model were each operationally defined by a single indicator. The Hardiness Scale represented adaptive readiness.

Attitudes Toward Safety Regulations questionnaire (ATSR) for professional drivers
Background: The aim of this study was to adapt the Attitudes Toward Safety Regulations (ATSR) questionnaire for professional drivers (Douglas & Swartz, 2009) to Spanish and to analyze the scale’s psychometric properties. Method: A version adapted to Spanish was administered to 507 participants, 91.2% of whom were men and 8.8% were women. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis (ESEM) was applied. This results were replicated with the same number of items. The resulting subscales showed good reliability. When we related the scores obtained on these subscales to various external correlates and other scales, they showed good convergent and criterial validity.Conclusions: The ATSR questionnaire in Spanish version for all kinds of professional drivers of all areas is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing attitudes towards driving safety regulations. Future research could use the ATSR as a screening tool in combination with other instruments to select drivers who exhibit safe driving behaviors. This would result in fewer traffic collisions and fewer penalties for traffic violations.

Antecedentes: Estudios recientes has sugerido que hay relación entre algunas variables de personalidad y la adicción al trabajo. En el presente trabajo nos hemos planteado el objetivo de realizar un estudio Predictivo de las variables antecedentes del Work Craving a través de las variables Impulsividad, Personalidad, Perfeccionismo, autoestima y Autoeficacia. Método: Los participantes han sido 332 trabajadores, obtenidos mediante un muestreo no probabilístico. Se han utilizado los programas FACTOR (versión 7.2) y SPSS 23.0. Resultados: se determina la capacidad predictiva de variables de personalidad y autoestima sobre el Work Craving. Conclusiones: El Work Craving se puede predecir a través de determinadas variables (Estabilidad emocional, Perfeccionismo y autoestima), contribuyendo la presente investigación a un mayor conocimiento de la Adicción al Trabajo y a la potenciación de un estilo de vida saludable que se puede ver afectado por la Adicción al Trabajo. Background: Recent studies have suggested a relationship between certain personality variables and work addiction. In the present work we conduct a predictive study of the background variables of work craving through the variables Impulsivity, Personality, Perfectionism, Self-esteem and Self-efficacy. Method: The participants were 332 workers obtained by non-probability sampling. We used the FACTOR programs (version 7.2) and SPSS 23.0. Results: The predictive capacity of personality variables and self-esteem is determined on the work craving. Conclusions: Work craving can be predicted through certain variables (Emotional Stability, Perfectionism and Self-esteem). This research contributes to greater knowledge of work addiction and to the empowerment of a healthy lifestyle that can be affected by addiction to work. Curiosity as a moderating variable between Impulsivity and Entrepreneurial Orientation

Abstract The objective of the present study is to analyze whether the variable Curiosity is a moderating variable between Impulsivity and Entrepreneurial Orientation. The multi-occupational sample of 883 Spanish and Colombian employees (49% men, 51% women) was obtained through non-probabilistic sampling. The data collected were processed with the SPSS 23.0 program. Statistically significant correlations were found among all the research variables except for Functional Impulsivity. Finally, empirical evidence indicates that Curiosity-D plays a moderating role between Dysfunctional Impulsivity and Entrepreneurial Orientation in the sense that Curiosity-D (understood as a quantitative variable) affects the intensity of the relationship between Dysfunctional Impulsivity (predictor variable) and Entrepreneurial Orientation (criterion variable).

Background: This study sets out the psychometric properties of the TRANS-18 scale and of a shorter version, the TRANS-12, both designed to detect safe behaviors (personal and vehicle-related) and psychophysiological disorders among professional drivers. Method: The investigation was divided into Study 1, into the factorial structure, reliability and validity of the TRANS-18, and Study 2, looking into the same aspects of the TRANS-12. The participants in both studies were resident in Spain. 272 professional drivers took part in Study 1, while Study 2 had 326 participants. Results: A confirmatory factor analysis was carried out for both studies. The results for Study 1 confirm an internal structure of three factors related to psychophysiological disorders and personal and vehicle-related safety behaviors, but the original TRANS-18 is discarded because it does not fit the model. With regard to Study 2, the results show a good fit of the three-factor model, appropriate reliability and evidence of validity. Conclusions: We conclude by considering the suitability of the psychometric properties of the TRANS-12 and its utility for identifying safe behaviors in work in the transport industry.

Curiosity as a moderating variable between Impulsivity and Entrepreneurial Orientation
El objetivo del presente estudio es analizar si la curiosidad es una variable moderadora entre la Impulsividad y la Orientación Emprendedora. Se utiliza una muestra multiocupacional de 883 empleados españoles (49 % hombres, 51 % mujeres), obtenidos mediante un muestreo no probabilístico. Se ha utilizado el programa SPSS 23.0. Se encontraron correlaciones estadísticamente significativas entre todas las variables de la investigación a excepcion de la impulsividad Funcional. Finalmente, la evidencia empírica indica que la Curiosidad-D tiene un papel moderador entre la impulsividad Disfuncional y la Orientación Emprendedora mostrada, en el sentido de que la Curiosidad-D (entendida como una variable cuantitativa) afecta la intensidad de la relación entre la Impulsividad Disfuncional (variable predictora) y la Orientación Emprendedora (variable de criterio). Spanish Adaptation of the Groningen Sleep Quality Scale (GSQS-8)
Professional drivers are a group susceptible to sleep problems or incorrect rest patterns resulting from work stress that causes alterations in biological stress markers, such as cortisol, or in cardiovascular parameters that show a state of physiological hyper-activation. The current research objective was to adapt and validate the Groningen Sleep Scale (Meijman et al., 1990) in a Spanish population. We analysed its internal structure, reliability and evidence of validity. The participants in this study were 372 drivers (93.4% men, 6.6% women), with a mean age of 40.9 (SD = 10.54), obtained through non-probabilistic sampling. The SPSS 23.0 and AMOS (5.0) programs were used. With the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the AMOS program (5.0), the indicators NFI = 0.902; TLI = 0.844; CFI = 0.913; RMSEA = 0.129 were obtained and showed an acceptable adjustment of the unifactorial model with 8 items. Adequate reliability (0.90) and appropriate evidence of validity with TDS-38, MBI-GS, Irritation, MP-9, DII, and Trans-18. We can conclude that the Groningen Sleep Scale (GSQS-8) is a reliable and valid instrument, suitable in the Spanish language for evaluating the sleep quality of professional drivers.
