Admission Grades as Predictors of Medical Students’ Academic Performance: A Cross-Sectional Study from Saudi Arabia
Background: Admission to medical school is competitive, and different countries use various tests in addition to high school grades to minimize selection bias. A few studies have been conducted to evaluate the usefulness of these tests as predictors for students’ academic performance. In this article, we aimed to assess factors that influenced students’ grades in medical school. Methods: A cross-sectional study included all students who graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Jazan University between 2018 and 2020. Scores of the included participants were extracted from the registry of Jazan University, and additional questions about study habits were completed by the included students. Descriptive, univariate, and multivariate analyses were performed for the factors that impacted academic performance. Results: There were 331 included candidates, and the majority of them were female (53%). About 60% of the participants were medical residents at the time of the study, and 40% were interns. Univariate and multivariate analyses indicated that grades in high school and the pre-requisite tests were positively associated with students’ academic performance. Further, studying more than two hours per day was positively correlated with better grades in medical school. Conclusion: Scores of the admission tests can serve as predictors for student performance in medical school. National studies are deemed essential to evaluate additional admission tests for medical school, an action that would minimize selection bias.
Adverse Childhood Experience as a Risk Factor for Developing Type 2 Diabetes among the Jazan Population: A Cross-Sectional Study
Background: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), such as childhood abuse, neglect, and family dysfunction, prevent appropriate emotional, behavioral, and physical development. They are also a major public health issue, and have been debatably linked to chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). T2DM is highly prevalent in Saudi Arabia, and various theories have been raised to explain the epidemiology of diabetes. However, few studies have discussed the relationship between ACEs and T2DM. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the association between ACEs and T2DM in Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This observational, cross-sectional study was conducted using a validated questionnaire distributed among patients with T2DM in a diabetes center. The t-test and Chi-Square test were used for comparison, and the p-value was set at <0.05 for significance. Results: A total of 579 participants were involved in this study, and 303 (52.33%) were female. Among the included participants, 45.25% were diagnosed with T2DM. About 28.71% of participants with diabetes experienced verbal abuse, 16.09% experienced physical abuse, and 30.91% reported that parents beat them. Additionally, 1.58% of participants with diabetes reported living with a family member who abused substances, 8.83% believed that no one would take them to the doctor even if essential, 12.62% of participants with diabetes felt that no one would protect them, and 23.03% reported that they felt no one in their family loved them. All reported ACEs were significantly associated with a high risk of T2DM (p < 0.05), and the more frequent the ACEs, the more the risk of T2DM (p = 0.0001). Conclusions: This study indicated that ACEs are significantly associated with the development of T2DM, and the risk increases with the frequency of ACEs, which aligns with other studies. Further national studies are required to understand how ACEs could contribute to T2DM, and preventive interventions in childhood must be considered to reduce the burden of T2DM.
Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of the Population in Jazan Region, Saudi Arabia Regarding Dengue Fever and Its Prevention Measures: A Community-Based Cross-Sectional Study
In previous studies, there was an apparent lack of health education about dengue fever (DF) among the Saudi population. Therefore, we conducted this study to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) about dengue fever among the Jazan region population, which is one of the most prevalent diseases in the region in Saudi Arabia (KSA). This was a cross-sectional and community-based study. The adult population was divided into governorates according to the regions that were close to each other, and then a convenient stratum was selected from each region. Next, random sampling was applied. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Exclusion criteria were young people (<18 years old) and health workers. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, the Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression. Of the 392 participants in this cross-sectional study, 59.18% were male, 76.28% were aged 18–35 years, 72.96% had a university degree, and 63% had a monthly income of less than SAR 5000 (USD1 = 3.76). The scores (mean ± SD) for KAP regarding DF among the responders were 22.77 ± 7.9, 22.68 ± 7.24, and 25.62 ± 9.4, respectively. KAP constructs were positively correlated according to the Pearson’s coefficient. In multiple linear regression analysis, males were favorably and substantially linked with attitude score (β = 2.76, p = 0.001) and negatively associated with practice score (β = −2.45, p = 0.023). No-degree participants scored lower on knowledge (β = −2.78, p = 0.003). There is potential for more research in Saudi Arabia to increase the generalizability to reduce the impact of dengue epidemics.
Pediatric Gastrointestinal Basidiobolomycosis: A Retrospective Study from Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia
Basidiobolomycosis is a rare fungal infection caused by Basidiobolus ranarum, and its incidence is poorly understood due to its rarity. Gastrointestinal Basidiobolomycosis (GIB) is an uncommon presentation with limited reports in Saudi Arabia. This retrospective study aims to describe risk factors, clinical findings, diagnosis, and management of GIB in the pediatric population. We conducted a retrospective analysis of all pediatric patients diagnosed with GIB at a tertiary hospital between 2010 and 2022. Patients were identified based on their diagnosis of GIB. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to assess risk factors associated with GIB. We analyzed 25 cases of pediatric GIB, with approximately half of the cases (56%) occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic. The mean age of affected patients was 6.6 years, with a male predominance (60%, n=15). About 100% of parents acknowledged gecko existence in their residence, and their children were exposed to insect bites. Poor appetite was reported in all patients, and high counts of eosinophils and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were observed. Thrombocytosis was present in approximately 90% of patients, and 87% had anemia. Abdominal computerized tomography scans and ultrasound-guided biopsies were the most used diagnostic tools, with cases being diagnosed based on histopathological findings and confirmed via fungal culture. Our study provides valuable information on the potential risk factors, clinical features, diagnosis, and management of pediatric GIB in the Jazan region. The observed increase in cases during the COVID-19 pandemic highlights the need for continued surveillance and research to understand better the epidemiology and associated risk factors with this rare fungal infection. These findings emphasize the need for heightened awareness, early detection, and effective prevention strategies to mitigate the impact of pediatric GIB.
The Relationship Between Weight Self-Stigma and Quality of Life Among Youth in the Jazan Region, Saudi Arabia
Studies on the role of weight self-stigma on the quality of life of young adults are limited. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine the relationship between different forms of weight self-stigma (self-devaluation and fear of enacted stigma) and the quality of life among Saudi youth in the Jazan region. A cross-sectional study was performed using a sample of 399 participants who were invited through social media platforms. We used Arabic, validated versions of the weight self-stigma questionnaire (WSSQ) and the World Health Organization quality of life questionnaire. Data analysis was performed by independent samples t-test and analysis of variance with Tukey's post hoc test. The study sample consisted of 399 participants aged 21.12 years ± 2.91 years. A total of 264 (66.2%) were female. The overall weight self-stigma score of the study population was 34.81 ± 10.73 on the WSSQ. The analysis showed a significant association between weight self-stigma and quality of life and body mass index (BMI; p < 0.01). In addition, participants who were overweight and obese had more self-devaluation and fear of enacted stigma than did participants with normal weight. Participants with high weight self-stigma had lower quality of life than did those with less weight self-stigma. The results of this study show that weight self-stigma is negatively correlated with the individual's quality of life. Weight self-stigma was positively associated with BMI.
Unraveling the Complex Relationship Between Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Lifestyle Factors, and Interstitial Lung Disease: Insights From Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization Analyses
Background Although the cause of interstitial lung disease (ILD) remains uncertain, it is believed to be a combination of genetic and non-inherited factors, such as smoking and diet. This research aims to evaluate the impact of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other modifiable risk factors on the likelihood of developing ILD by utilizing two-sample Mendelian randomization. Methodology The research utilized publicly accessible single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were deemed significant on a genome-wide scale. These SNPs were chosen from prior studies conducted by various consortia. The study examined GERD and a wide range of smoking habits, including the age at which individuals started smoking, the intensity of their smoking, and whether their mothers smoked. Additionally, the study considered other relevant risk factors such as key dietary factors, coffee consumption, body mass index (BMI), and physical activity. The study focused on self-reported ILD as its outcome measure. The genetic information for ILD was sourced from the FinnGen and UK Biobank (UKB) cohorts. Results The study encompassed a wide range of sample sizes, varying from 64,949 to 632,802, for each risk factor collected from multiple consortia. In total, 593 SNPs were included for all risk factors. The findings revealed significant associations between genetically estimated GERD, dietary factors, BMI, and the risk of ILD within the FinnGen consortium. The odds ratios (ORs) indicated an increase in the risk of ILD per unit of GERD (OR = 1.17, p = 0.001), smoking initiation (OR = 1.10, p < 0.05), BMI (OR = 1.15, p = 0.006), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (OR = 1.10, p = 0.02). On the other hand, there was a decrease in the risk of ILD per unit increase in coffee intake (OR = 0.64, p = 0.01) and physical activity (OR = 0.79, p=0.03). Additionally, the results demonstrated a significant association between genetically estimated GERD (OR = 1.01, p < 0.05), coffee intake (OR = 1.14, p=0.03), and high-density lipoproteins (HDL) (OR = 1.01, p=0.04) and increased risk of ILD specifically within the UKB. Conclusions This research indicates that the development of ILDs may be causally associated with GERD and various factors such as coffee intake, smoking, BMI, physical activity, LDL, and HDL These results hold great importance in terms of devising effective strategies for the treatment and prevention of ILDs.
Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice Regarding Diabetes Mellitus Among Type 2 Diabetic Patients Attending Primary Health Care Centers in the Jazan Region of Saudi Arabia
BackgroundDiabetes mellitus is a disease whose dramatic increase in prevalence worldwide poses a global health crisis. Saudi Arabia has the seventh highest rate of diabetes in the world and the second highest rate in the Middle East. The incidence of diabetes has risen due to insufficient knowledge, attitude, and practice surrounding the disease. Saudis’ quality of life has decreased due to the recent rise in diabetes-related mortality and illnesses. Hence, leading healthy lives requires patients to have positive attitudes and self-awareness, which will eventually contribute to reducing diabetes mellites-related complications.MethodsA cross-sectional study among patients with type 2 diabetes mellites (T2DM) in the Jazan region of Saudi Arabia was conducted to assess Saudi adults’ knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding the disease. The patients participated in the study by filling in a questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out using R software, version 4.0.5 (R Studio: Integrated Development for R, Boston, MA) and the analysis included general sample demographics. KAP scores were the dependent variables. Following the sample description, regression analysis was performed to examine the adjusted relationships between KAP factors and independent variables. The impact of all independent variables on KAP variables was examined using multiple linear regression analysis. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant, and the beta coefficient was applied to estimate the associations between the independent variables and the KAP variables. ResultsA total of 424 participants were involved in this study, with 194 male participants and 230 female participants. The mean duration of having T2DM was 7.63 ± 7.19 years. More than half of the study participants had a degree (58.49%), and nearly half were employed (42.45%). Married participants had higher knowledge and attitude scores than single and divorced or widowed participants (9.19 ± 3.38, 80.14 ± 14.72, respectively). In comparison, divorced or widowed participants had higher practice scores than single and married participants (16.35 ± 7.42). Participants with higher education attainment had higher knowledge and attitude scores than those with no degree (9.54 ± 3.39, 80.58 ± 17.57, respectively), whereas participants with no degree demonstrated higher practice scores (16.85 ± 8.3) than those with degrees. In examining the study participants’ KAP scores, we found knowledge to be insufficient in 51.2% and sufficient in 48.8% of the participants. Of the participants, 7.8% were found to have negative attitude levels and 92.2% were found to have positive attitude levels. Finally, study participants’ practice levels were found to be negative in 24.8% and positive in 75.2% of participants.ConclusionsThis study revealed that patients have gaps in their knowledge, attitude, and practice in regard to T2DM. In this study, associations and correlations were established between KAP scores and the sociodemographic characteristics of the patients. The findings of this study could be helpful to policymakers, decision-makers, health care professionals, and patient advocacy groups in developing interventions to improve the health outcomes in T2DM patients.
Relationship Between Depression, Anxiety, Stress, and Weight Self-Stigma Among Youths in Saudi Arabia: A Nationwide Study
Background and objectives Many research studies show that self-stigma related to weight can exacerbate mental health issues. There is also evidence suggesting that depression, anxiety, and stress could be predictors of weight stigma. However, these connections have not been thoroughly investigated among young people in Saudi Arabia, where there is a high prevalence of obesity. This study aimed to explore the relationships between depression, anxiety, stress, and weight self-stigma in Saudi Arabian adolescents and young adults. Materials and methods This cross-sectional study was conducted between January and March 2022 and utilized online surveys, including the Weight Self-Stigma Questionnaire (WSSQ) and Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale 21 (DASS-21). We conducted descriptive analysis, independent samples t-tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and linear regression for the statistical analysis using SPSS version 25 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Results A total of 1624 participants were enrolled in this survey. Most participants (889, 54.7%) were females. The mean age was 20.73 years (SD: 2.63). Males were more likely to report self-stigma compared to females (p = 0.018). Weight self-stigma demonstrated significant positive associations with body mass index (BMI) (p = 0.0001) and depression, anxiety, and stress (p = 0.0001) scores. Further analysis revealed weight self-stigma was positively correlated with psychological distress levels in the study population (p = 0.0001). The results demonstrated a statistically significant difference between different regions of Saudi Arabia with weight self-stigma being more prevalent in the Al-Baha region and least prevalent in the Al-Madinah region. Conclusions The results of this study indicate robust positive correlations between weight self-stigma scores and depression, anxiety, and stress scale scores among adolescents and young adults in Saudi Arabia. Further epidemiological and clinical studies on the national level are warranted.
Causal Associations of Modifiable Risk Factors With Migraine: Evidence From Mendelian Randomization Analysis
Background and objectives The exact etiology of migraine is unknown; however, it is likely a mixture of genetic and non-genetic factors including lifestyle variables like smoking and diet. This study aims to assess the causal effect of modifiable risk factors on the risk of migraine using two-sample Mendelian randomization. Materials and methods The study used publicly available genome-wide significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). The study evaluated a diverse smoking exposure, encompassing age at smoking initiation, smoking intensity, and maternal smoking, alongside other pertinent risk factors, namely key dietary aspects, coffee consumption, BMI, and physical activity. Self-reported migraine was the outcome of the study. The genetic data for migraine were obtained from the FinnGen (Finland) and the UK Biobank (United Kingdom) cohorts. Results With sample sizes ranging from 64,949 to 632,802 for each risk factor collected from several consorts, the study included a total of 282 SNPs for all risk factors. The findings demonstrated that in the FinnGen consortium, genetically estimated dietary factors as well as BMI, were significantly associated with the risk of migraine (OR 0.765 per single unit of BMI, p = 0.011; OR 0.468 per one SD higher cheese intake, p = 0.012; OR 0.286 per one SD higher salad intake, p = 0.004, and 0.625 per one SD higher coffee consumption, p = 0.003, respectively). The results also showed that in the UK Biobank specifically, a genetically estimated history of maternal smoking was significantly associated with an elevated risk of migraine (OR=1.02, p=0.004). Conclusions The latest study implies a connection between maternal smoking and a heightened risk of migraines, whereas cheese intake, salad intake, coffee consumption, BMI, and physical activity are associated with a lower risk of migraine development.
Exploring COVID-19 Vaccine Intentions, Perceptions, and Uptake Among the Saudi Population
Background The widespread hesitancy, delays in acceptance, or outright refusal to receive vaccinations, even when readily available, present a notable global challenge. This is particularly pertinent in the context of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, where research shows considerable variability in hesitancy rates worldwide. The primary aim of this study is to investigate COVID-19 vaccine intentions among the Saudi population using behavioral theories as a framework. Methodology A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from January 2022 to December 2022. An online self-administered survey was distributed via social media to reach the targeted participants. Both men and women aged >18 years were included, while non-Saudi individuals and people who are less than 18 years old were excluded. A total of 1,139 participants were included. Results The study found that about 96% of respondents were willing to receive a COVID-19 vaccination. Analyzing sociodemographic and COVID-19-related factors with vaccine intention showed that those previously diagnosed with COVID-19 were less likely to refuse vaccination ( = 0.015). Univariate analyses revealed significant differences in the health belief model (HBM) and theory of planned behavior (TPB) dimensions between willing and unwilling participants. Willing individuals perceived greater infection severity ( = 0.543), higher vaccination benefits ( < 0.01), fewer barriers ( < 0.01), more cues to action ( < 0.01), and lower infection prevention self-efficacy ( < 0.01) compared to the unwilling group. TPB dimensions also differed, with willing individuals having more favorable vaccine attitudes ( < 0.01) and stronger vaccination social norms ( < 0.01). A multivariate logistic regression indicated that having COVID-19 increased vaccine willingness likelihood (odds ratio [OR] = 2.11, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.14-3.91). Perceived barriers (OR = 0.61, 95% CI 0.44-0.85), self-efficacy (OR = 1.96, 95% CI 1.16-3.32) from HBM, and favorable vaccine attitudes (OR = 1.55, 95% CI 1.02-2.35) from TPB were significant predictors of vaccine willingness. Conclusions The TPB highlighted the importance of attitudes and perceived norms in vaccination acceptance, suggesting their value in vaccination promotion strategies. However, further research, including prospective and interventional studies drawing from a wider array of psychological theories, is needed to develop effective interventions for promoting vaccination.
