Spin asymmetries in electron-jet production at the future electron ion collider
A bstract We study all the possible spin asymmetries that can arise in back-to-back electron-jet production, ep → e + jet + X , as well as the associated jet fragmentation process, ep → e +jet( h )+ X , in electron-proton collisions. We derive the factorization formalism for these spin asymmetries and perform the corresponding phenomenology for the kinematics relevant to the future electron ion collider. In the case of unpolarized electron-proton scattering, we also give predictions for azimuthal asymmetries for the HERA experiment. This demonstrates that electron-jet production is an outstanding process for probing unpolarized and polarized transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions.
QCD resummation on single hadron transverse momentum distribution with the thrust axis
A bstract We derive the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization and resummation formula of the unpolarized transverse momentum distribution ( j T ) for the single hadron production with the thrust axis in an electron-positron collision. Two different kinematic regions are considered, including small transverse momentum limit j T « Q , and joint transverse momentum and threshold limit j T « Q (1 − z h ) « Q , where Q and z h are the hard scattering energy and the observed hadron momentum fraction. Using effective theory methods, we resum logarithms ln( Q/j T ) and ln(1 − z h ) to all orders. In the end, we present the differential cross sections and Gaussian widths calculated for the inclusive charged pion production and find that our results are consistent with the measurements reported by the Belle collaboration.
The Sivers asymmetry in hadronic dijet production
A bstract We study the single spin asymmetry in the back-to-back dijet production in transversely polarized proton-proton collisions. Such an asymmetry is generated by the Sivers functions in the incoming polarized proton. We propose a QCD formalism in terms of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions, which allow us to resum the large logarithms that arise in the perturbative calculations. We make predictions for the Sivers asymmetry of hadronic dijet production at the kinematic region that is relevant to the experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We further compute the spin asymmetries in the selected positive and negative jet charge bins, to separate the contributions from u - and d -quark Sivers functions. We find that both the sign and size of our numerical results are roughly consistent with the preliminary results from the STAR collaboration at the RHIC.
QCD evolution of the gluon Sivers function in heavy flavor dijet production at the Electron-Ion Collider
A bstract Using Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, we develop the transverse-momentum-dependent factorization formalism for heavy flavor dijet production in polarized-proton-electron collisions. We consider heavy flavor mass corrections in the collinear-soft and jet functions, as well as the associated evolution equations. Using this formalism, we generate a prediction for the gluon Sivers asymmetry for charm and bottom dijet production at the future Electron-Ion Collider. Furthermore, we compare theoretical predictions with and without the inclusion of finite quark masses. We find that the heavy flavor mass effects can give sizable corrections to the predicted asymmetry.
Factorization of non-global LHC observables and resummation of super-leading logarithms
A bstract We present a systematic formalism based on a factorization theorem in soft-collinear effective theory to describe non-global observables at hadron colliders, such as gap-between-jets cross sections. The cross sections are factorized into convolutions of hard functions, capturing the dependence on the partonic center-of-mass energy s ̂ , and low-energy matrix elements, which are sensitive to the low scale Q 0 ≪ s ̂ characteristic of the veto imposed on energetic emissions into the gap between the jets. The scale evolution of both objects is governed by a renormalization-group equation, which we derive at one-loop order. By solving the evolution equation for the hard functions for arbitrary 2 → M jet processes in the leading logarithmic approximation, we accomplish for the first time the all-order resummation of the so-called “super-leading logarithms” discovered in 2006, thereby solving an old problem of quantum field theory. We study the numerical size of the corresponding effects for different partonic scattering processes and explain why they are sizable for pp → 2 jets processes, but suppressed in H / Z and H / Z + jet production. The super-leading logarithms are given by an alternating series, whose individual terms can be much larger than the resummed result, even in very high orders of the loop expansion. Resummation is therefore essential to control these effects. We find that the asymptotic fall-off of the resummed series is much weaker than for standard Sudakov form factors.
Non-global logarithms in jet and isolation cone cross sections
A bstract Starting from a factorization theorem in effective field theory, we derive a parton-shower equation for the resummation of non-global logarithms. We have implemented this shower and interfaced it with a tree-level event generator to obtain an automated framework to resum the leading logarithm of non-global observables in the large- N c limit. Using this setup, we compute gap fractions for dijet processes and isolation cone cross sections relevant for photon production. We compare our results with fixed-order computations and LHC measurements. We find that naive exponentiation is often not adequate, especially when the vetoed region is small, since non-global contributions are enhanced due to their dependence on the veto-region size. Since our parton shower is derived from first principles and based on renormalization-group evolution, it is clear what ingredients will have to be included to perform resummations at subleading logarithmic accuracy in the future.
Factorization and resummation for jet processes
A bstract From a detailed analysis of cone-jet cross sections in effective field theory, we obtain novel factorization theorems which separate the physics associated with different energy scales present in such processes. The relevant low-energy physics is encoded in Wilson lines along the directions of the energetic particles inside the jets. This multi-Wilson-line structure is present even for narrow-cone jets due to the relevance of small-angle soft radiation. We discuss the renormalization-group equations satisfied by these operators. Their solution resums all logarithmically enhanced contributions to such processes, including non-global logarithms. Such logarithms arise in many observables, in particular whenever hard phase-space constraints are imposed, and are not captured with standard resummation techniques. Our formalism provides the basis for higher-order logarithmic resummations of jet and other non-global observables. As a nontrivial consistency check, we use it to obtain explicit two-loop results for all logarithmically enhanced terms in cone-jet cross sections and verify those against numerical fixed-order computations.
Probing transverse momentum dependent structures with azimuthal dependence of energy correlators
A bstract We study the azimuthal angle dependence of the energy-energy correlators in the back-to-back region for e + e − annihilation and deep inelastic scattering (DIS) processes with general polarization of the proton beam. We demonstrate that the polarization information of the beam and the underlying partons from the hard scattering is propagated into the azimuthal angle dependence of the energy-energy correlators. In the process, we define the Collins-type EEC jet functions and introduce a new EEC observable using the lab-frame angles in the DIS process. Furthermore, we extend our formalism to explore the two-point energy correlation between hadrons with different quantum numbers in the back-to-back limit . We find that in the Operator Product Expansion (OPE) region the nonperturbative information is entirely encapsulated by a single number. Using our formalism, we present several phenomenological studies that showcase how energy correlators can be used to probe transverse momentum dependent structures.
Resummation of boson-jet correlation at hadron colliders
A bstract We perform a precise calculation of the transverse momentum ( q → T ) distribution of the boson+jet system in boson production events. The boson can be either a photon, W , Z or Higgs boson with mass m V , and q → T is the sum of the transverse momenta of the boson and the leading jet with magnitude q T = | q → T | . Using renormalization group techniques and soft-collinear effective theory, we resum logarithms log ( Q/q T ) and log R at next-to- leading logarithmic accuracy including the non-global logarithms, where Q and R are respectively the hard scattering energy and the radius of the jet. Specifically, we investigate two scenarios of p T J ≲ m V or p T J ≳ m V in Z +jet events, and we examine the q T distributions with different jet radii and study the effect of non-global logarithms. In the end we compare our theoretical calculations with Monte Carlo simulations and data from the LHC.
NLL′ resummation of jet mass
A bstract Starting from a factorization theorem in effective field theory, we present resummed results for two non-global observables: the invariant-mass distribution of jets and the energy distribution outside jets. Our results include the full next-to-leading-order corrections to the hard, jet and soft functions and are implemented in a parton-shower framework which generates the renormalization-group running in the effective theory. The inclusion of these matching corrections leads to an improved description of the data and reduced theoretical uncertainties. They will have to be combined with two-loop running in the future, but our results are an important first step towards the higher-logarithmic resummation of non-global observables.
