Black Cadet in a White Bastion: Charles Young at West Point
Despite the dearth of Young's words, Shellum discovers that the few African Americans cadets who received appointments in the 1880s and made it through West Point entrance examinations suffered social isolation. Shellum attributes the decrease in African American cadets to the end of Reconstruction (officially a decade before Young's admittance) and the rise of Jim Crow, but the biographical focus does not answer why no other African Americans graduated until 1936.
