Large-area patterning of full-color quantum dot arrays beyond 1000 pixels per inch by selective electrophoretic deposition
Colloidal quantum dot (QD) emitters show great promise in the development of next-generation displays. Although various solution-processed techniques have been developed for nanomaterials, high-resolution and uniform patterning technology amicable to manufacturing is still missing. Here, we present large-area, high-resolution, full-color QD patterning utilizing a selective electrophoretic deposition (SEPD) technique. This technique utilizes photolithography combined with SEPD to achieve uniform and fast fabrication, low-cost QD patterning in large-area beyond 1,000 pixels-per-inch. The QD patterns only deposited on selective electrodes with precisely controlled thickness in a large range, which could cater for various optoelectronic devices. The adjustable surface morphology, packing density and refractive index of QD films enable higher efficiency compared to conventional solution-processed methods. We further demonstrate the versatility of our approach to integrate various QDs into large-area arrays of full-color emitting pixels and QLEDs with good performance. The results suggest a manufacture-viable technology for commercialization of QD-based displays. Colloidal quantum dots are promising for next-generation displays, yet the technology to realise high-resolution and uniform patterning is still scarce. Here, the authors report full-colour QD large area patterning by combining photolithography and selective electrophoretic deposition technique.
Glucagon receptor antibody completely suppresses type 1 diabetes phenotype without insulin by disrupting a novel diabetogenic pathway
Insulin monotherapy can neither maintain normoglycemia in type 1 diabetes (T1D) nor prevent the long-term damage indicated by elevated glycation products in blood, such as glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Here we find that hyperglycemia, when unaccompanied by an acute increase in insulin, enhances itself by paradoxically stimulating hyperglucagonemia. Raising glucose from 5 to 25 mM without insulin enhanced glucagon secretion ∼two- to fivefold in InR1-G9 α cells and ∼18-fold in perfused pancreata from insulin-deficient rats with T1D. Mice with T1D receiving insulin treatment paradoxically exhibited threefold higher plasma glucagon during hyperglycemic surges than during normoglycemic intervals. Blockade of glucagon action with mAb Ac, a glucagon receptor (GCGR) antagonizing antibody, maintained glucose below 100 mg/dL and HbA1c levels below 4% in insulin-deficient mice with T1D. In rodents with T1D, hyperglycemia stimulates glucagon secretion, up-regulating phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase and enhancing hyperglycemia. GCGR antagonism in mice with T1D normalizes glucose and HbA1c, even without insulin. Significance Subcutaneous injections of insulin sustain life in mammals unable to produce insulin (type 1 diabetes) but do not prevent hyperglycemic and hypoglycemic swings or decrease hemoglobin A1c levels to normal amounts. In mice treated with insulin alone, repeated episodes of transient elevated blood glucose cause long-term damage. We show that in mice with type 1 diabetes treated with insulin, the transient high blood glucose levels require production of glucagon, a hormone that will cause the liver to produce more glucose. Blocking the action of glucagon with an antibody to the glucagon receptor completely normalizes blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c in the complete absence of insulin therapy. Suppressing glucagon action in combination with low-dose insulin would be a superior treatment for type 1 diabetes.
The Influence of Mountain Height and Distance on Shape Factor of Wind Load of Plastic Tunnel
Due to their soft structure and covering material, plastic greenhouses are vulnerable to wind disasters, causing large-scale damage and huge economic losses. The wind load of greenhouses depends on the surface wind pressure distribution, which is different for greenhouses located in valleys from those in plain areas. To study the wind pressure distribution law for various regions of greenhouses built in valleys, mountain and greenhouse models have been built by Computational Fluid Dynamics, in which the length direction of the greenhouse is perpendicular to the valley and the wind direction is parallel to the valley. In the analysis, the verified turbulence model and grid division method are both introduced, and the effect of the height and distance of mountains is considered. According to the distribution law of wind pressure, the greenhouse’s surface is partitioned, and the variation law of the shape factor of wind load on a plastic tunnel is analyzed. Then, the calculation model for the shape factor of the wind load on the greenhouse located in a valley is proposed. The conclusions show that: (a) When the wind inflow direction angle is parallel to the valley, the distribution pattern of wind pressure on the surface of the greenhouse is similar to that on the plain regardless of the distance and height of the mountains, while the values of the wind pressure are greatly affected by the mountain height and distance. The distance between mountains has greater influence than the effect of mountain height. (b) The shape factor of wind load on the suction area of the greenhouse decreases as the distance of mountains increases, while the shape factor on the pressure area of the greenhouse increases with the increase in the distance. It can be seen that the valley effect is non-negligible. The narrower and deeper the valley, the greater the wind pressure effect. (c) When the ratio of the distance between the foot of the mountain and the greenhouse d to the height of the mountain H is less than 5, i.e., d/H < 5, the ratio of the distance to the height has a significant impact on the shape factor of wind load on the greenhouse. When d/H is close to 10, the shape factor of the wind load in the valley area is close to that in the plain area, and the effect of the ratio between the height and the distance is negligible. (d) The proposed calculation model can be used to calculate the effect of mountain height and distance on the shape factor of wind load. The research results can be used in the wind resistance design of plastic greenhouses in valley areas, and can also provide some data support for the revision of the greenhouse structural load code.
Exploration of Erdaohe Silver Polymetallic Deposit in Inner Mongolia based on Induced Polarization Method
The exploration of Erdaohe Cu-Ag-Pb-Zn deposit in Zhalantun City, Inner Mongolia has entered the stage of blind exploration. It is a difficult problem at this stage whether common geophysical methods can find anomalies caused by 300∼1000 m or deeper Pb-Zn deposits in this area. Whether the problem is solved or not has a strong practical significance for the current and future prospecting work in this area. According to the theory of induced polarization sounding in time domain, it is considered in this paper that when the parameters such as high power, suitable device, and time delay are well coupled with the deep blind ore, it is possible to find anomalies caused by deep lead-zinc ore larger than 300 m. In order to prove the feasibility of the deep application of this method, the high-power induced polarization sounding experiment with different devices and different power supply cycles was carried out in Erdaohe copper-silver lead-zinc mine. The test results show that by adopting the measurement method of the encrypted equipotential device and selecting the appropriate polar distance, when the power supply period is 32 s, the time delay is 200 s and the sampling width is 200 s, a good deep lead-zinc mine anomaly can be found. The equipotential symmetrical quadrupole sounding MN/AB = 1/10 and the depth correction coefficient is 0.41 for inversion can accurately determine the anomaly location, which is worthy of popularization and application in this area. The ore bodies in this area are controlled by structures and distributed in lenticular layers along the fault footwall interlayer fracture zone. The ore bodies may change with the occurrence of the fracture surface. The characteristics of low resistivity, low slow, and high polarization of IP and single peak anomaly of IP sounding are important signs of lead-zinc prospecting in this area.
Effects of 1, 2, 4-triazole additive on PEM fuel cell conditioning
Melt processing is one of the essential technologies for the mass production of polymer electrolyte membranes (PEM) at low cost. Azoles have been widely used in PEM to improve their conductivity at a relatively low humidity and recently as bifunctional additives in a melt blowing processing for PEM mass production. In this work, we attempted to assess the effect of 1, 2, 4-triazole additive in membranes and in catalyst layers on PEM fuel cell conditioning. Various characterization tools including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and conditioning with constant current were applied to diagnose the temporary electrochemical reaction effect and the permanent performance loss caused by the triazole additives. It was found that triazole additives in membranes could migrate into the catalyst layers and significantly affect the open circuit voltage (OCV) and the conditioning. The effect could be partially or completely removed/cleaned either through longer conditioning time or via CV cycling, which depends on the amount of additives remaining in the membrane. The findings provide valuable scientific insights on the relevance of post treatment steps during membrane production and overcoming fuel cell contamination issues due to residual additive in the membranes and understanding the quality control needed for fuel cell membranes by melt blowing processing.
Superior proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) performance using short-side-chain perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membrane and ionomer
Optimization of the ionomer materials in catalyst layers (CLs) which sometimes is overlooked has been equally crucial as selection of the membranes in membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for achieving a superior performance in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Four combinations of the MEAs composed of short-side-chain (SSC) and long-side-chain (LSC) perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) polymers as membrane and ionomer materials have been prepared and tested under various temperatures and humidity conditions, aiming to investigate the effects of different side chain polymer in membranes and CLs on fuel cell performance. It is discovered that SSC PFSA polymer used as membrane and ionomer in CL yields better fuel cell performance than LSC PFSA polymer, especially at high temperature and low RH conditions. The MEA with the SSC PFSA employed both as a membrane and as an ionomer in cathode CL demonstrates the best cell performance amongst the investigated MEAs. Furthermore, various electrochemical diagnoses have been applied to fundamentally understand the contributions of the different resistances to the overall cell performance. It is illustrated that the charge transfer resistance (Rcₜ) made the greatest contribution to the overall cell resistance and then membrane resistance (Rₘ), implying that the use of the advanced ionomer in CL could lead to more noticeable improvement in cell performance than only the substitution as the membrane.
Ion exchange membranes in electrochemical CO₂ reduction processes
The low-temperature electrolysis of CO₂ in membrane-based flow reactors is a promising technology for converting captured CO₂ into valuable chemicals and fuels. In recent years, substantial improvements in reactor design have significantly improved the economic viability of this technology; thus, the field has experienced a rapid increase in research interest. Among the factors related to reactor design, the ion exchange membrane (IEM) plays a prominent role in the energetic efficiency of CO₂ conversion into useful products. Reactors utilizing cation exchange, anion exchange and bipolar membranes have all been developed, each providing unique benefits and challenges that must be overcome before large-scale commercialization is feasible. Therefore, to direct advances in IEM technology specific to electrochemical CO₂ reduction reactions (CO₂RRs), this review serves to first provide polymer scientists with a general understanding of membrane-based CO₂RR reactors and membrane-related shortcomings and to encourage systematic synthetic approaches to develop membranes that meet the specific requirements of CO₂RRs. Second, this review provides researchers in the fields of electrocatalysis and CO₂RRs with more detailed insight into the often-overlooked membrane roles and requirements; thus, new methodologies for membrane evaluation during CO₂RR may be developed. By using CO₂-to-CO/HCOO− methodologies as practical baseline systems, a clear conceptualization of the merits and challenges of different systems and reasonable objectives for future research and development are presented.
Ex-situ evaluation of commercial polymer membranes for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs)
Polymer membranes play a vital role in vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs), acting as a separator between the two compartments, an electronic insulator for maintaining electrical neutrality of the cell, and an ionic conductor for allowing the transport of ionic charge carriers. It is a major influencer of VRFB performance, but also identified as one of the major factors limiting the large-scale implementation of VRFB technology in energy storage applications due to its cost and durability. In this work, five (5) high-priority characteristics of membranes related to VRFB performance were selected as major considerable factors for membrane screening before in-situ testing. Eight (8) state-of-the-art of commercially available ion exchange membranes (IEMs) were specifically selected, evaluated and compared by a set of ex-situ assessment approaches to determine the possibility of the membranes applied for VRFB. The results recommend perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes and hydrocarbon anion exchange membranes (AEMs) as the candidates for further in-situ testing, while one hydrocarbon cation exchange membrane (CEM) is not recommended for VRFB application due to its relatively high VO2+ ion crossover and low mechanical stability during/after the chemical stability test. This work could provide VRFB researchers and industry a valuable reference for selecting the polymer membrane materials before VRFB in-situ testing.
Synthesis of polymer grafted starches and their flocculation properties in clay suspension
Starch-based flocculants have been emerged as a promising alternative to conventional synthetic flocculants in wastewater treatment, especially for the treatment of oil sand tailings, as they are low cost, safe, biodegradable, fairly shear-stable, readily available from reproducible agricultural resources, and do not result in secondary pollution. In this paper, three types of polymer-grafted starches (St-g-Polymer) with different charge properties were synthesized and their molecular structures were controlled by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The correlations between the charge properties of starch-based flocculants, external environmental parameters, and flocculation performance were systematically investigated by conducting jar tests under various environmental conditions. It was found that the charge properties of the branch chain had a significant impact on flocculation performance. The cationic St-g-Polymer demonstrated the best performance due to the grafting of the cationic monomer to the starch backbone which improved the solubility of the copolymer and aided in the removal of small/water-soluble particles. The results obtained could assist in guiding the selection and design of suitable biodegradable flocculants when treating targeted wastewater.
