What distinguishes the American expensive-car buyer is that, once he's made up his mind, he's usually in a hurry. ''[Vroom], vroom, vroom!'' Most cars moving through Sindelfingen have a job ticket that identifies the future destination of the frame or body on the assembly lines - each with chosen options or colors. The exceptions are cars going to the United States. ''We have learned the hard way that an American won't wait,'' says Gerhard Liener, the Daimler management board member for subsidiaries. ''If there isn't a car he wants in the showroom, he walks out.'' ''No one was willing to allow outsiders to own Daim-ler,'' a company official said. ''This is a symbol of Germany.'' This can be embarrassing. Company histories ignore the World War II years of producing engines for tanks and Messerschmitt fighters and bombers except to note that Daimler-Benz production facilities were destroyed by 1945. The company's centenary calendar illustrates the years 1933-45 with paintings of a famous Mercedes racing car, Jesse Owens at the 1936 Olympics and Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh in ''Gone With the Wind.'' ''Hitler didn't own a Mercedes because he loved the company,'' an executive told me. ''He just appreciated good engineering.'' AIMLER engineers do not describe the Mercedes as the best car in the world. Rather, as Joachim Sorsche, director of engine and chassis design, says, ''We try to produce the best compromise.'' ''I feel personally connected to each car that goes by here,'' says Alfred Lohner, a 52-year-old assemble meister (foreman) who joined the company as an apprentice at the age of 15 in 1948. ''But only 20 percent of the new ones are like me,'' he says. ''For the rest it's just a job.'' Daimler-Benz, after all, has become a conglomerate, recently acquiring three of Germany's leading electronic, aerospace and weaponry companies. Automobiles, as opposed to trucks, are built at only three of its 50 plants -Sindelfingen, Bremen and East London, South Africa.

Getting started on JavaScript
IF you want to jump into the bandwagon of developing and programming Web pages, you will inevitably need to master CGI and Java programming languages which aren't very easy to learn especially if you do not have any programming experience. This is where JavaScript comes into place. It is targeted at intermediate Web developers who need a stepping stone between HTML and the more sophisticated and complex languages. Although simpler and easier to understand than Java, new users would still have to start somewhere. Laura Lemay's Web Workshop: JavaScript is a fine book for readers who want to get started and gain some invaluable knowledge about the language.
