Predictive signs of dysgraphia: graphesthesia as a soft sensory finding in children with writing difficulties in Arabic language
Background Dysgraphia is one of the learning disabilities that require a complex set motor actions. It affects writing skills in the form of poor handwriting, spelling problems, and difficulty in writing thoughts and ideas. Children with learning disabilities often show some soft neurological signs as graphesthesia. The aim of this work is to study graphesthesia as a predictive sign that could be associated with developmental dysgraphia. Results Graphesthesia test showed significant difference when applied on dysgraphic children compared to children with normal leaning development. Conclusion Graphesthesia is a soft neurological sign that showed to be affected in Arabic dysgraphic children and could be used as a quick predictive test for dysgraphia before applying the formal graded tests.
Feeding behavioral problems among Egyptian children with autism spectrum disorder
Background Eating problems are prevalent among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The Brief Autism Mealtime Behaviors Inventory (BAMBI) has great potential for helping physicians quickly detect feeding issues in autistic children. This study aimed to evaluate feeding behavioral problems and their correlation to ASD severity among children with ASD using the BAMBI and Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). This cross-sectional study enrolled 52 Egyptian children with an ASD. An Arabic version of BAMBI was administered to the parents of these children. Data about the participants’ sociodemographics as well as BAMBI and CARS were collected. Results Our main findings revealed that limited food variety features, such as preferring crunchy food or only sweet foods, were significant problems (57.7% and 52%). The means of the BAMBI and the CARS were 48.11 ± 12.2 and 39.9 ± 9.8, respectively. Living in rural areas, having limited income, elementary education of mothers, unemployed fathers, low birth weight, and neonatal care unit admission, were significantly associated with the BAMBI scale. Children with more severe ASD have a limited variety of behavior during eating than the minimal and moderate ASD groups ( p  = 0.01 and 0.03, respectively). A statistically positive correlation was observed between the BAMBI and CARS ( r  = 0.4 and p  = 0.02). Conclusions Using the BAMBI scale, Egyptian children with more severe ASD were found to have limited food selectivity. The BAMBI scale was significantly correlated with the CARS, suggesting that the BAMBI may be an effective measure of the severity in autistic children.
The incidence of dysgraphia in Arabic language in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder
Background Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a brain disorder marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development. Although children with ADHD made much more spelling errors, they had a distinct pattern of letter insertions, replacements, transpositions, and omissions. This mistake type is sometimes referred to as graphemic buffer errors, and it is caused by a lack of attention required for motor planning. The aim of study was to assess the incidence of dysgraphia in Arabic language in children with ADHD for better helping, diagnosis and management of those children. Results Ten percent of ADHD children had normal handwriting with no disability, 40% had excellent handwriting with a minimum of disability and 50% of ADHD children showed mild to moderate disability. There were significant differences between ADHD children and control children regarding results of each item on the subtest of handwriting of dysgraphia disability scale (DDS), respecting lines, spacing between words, letter direction, spelling a sentence, and punctuation. Drawing affected in ADHD children. The finger tapping speed was affected in almost ADHD children. Conclusions Dysgraphia highly presents in our sample of ADHD children with poor fine motor skills in ADHD children than normal children. ADHD children have illegible handwriting, not respecting lines, insufficient space between and within words, multiple spelling errors, and omissions of letters or words. Graphesthesia and stereognosis are affected more in ADHD children than in control children drawing and finger tapping speed affected in ADHD children.
Effect of prematurely primary front teeth loss with anterior esthetic fixed appliance on fricative production in Arabic-speaking children
Background Primary teeth affect the life quality regarding chewing, speech production, esthetics, and psychological well-being. Young children usually lose their primary maxillary incisors due to trauma or care and that leads to fault production of alveolar and dental fricatives. Fixed esthetic appliance replacing the lost primary front teeth were inserted and fricative sounds /s/,/ s /,/∫ /,/z/and / z / were tested before and after insertion of the fixed appliance through different time intervals. Results Improvement of fricative sound production occurred after fixed appliance insertion the /s/ sound, followed by / s / sound showed immediate improvement while the /∫ / sound was the least to be improved even after 1 month duration. Both sounds / z / and /z/ sound showed distortion immediately. Conclusion Premature loss of primary incisors in young children has a significant impact on speech production.
