An Early Umayyad Papyrus Invitation for the Ḥajj
Some time between 86/705 and 99/717 Sahl b. 'Abd al-'Aziz wrote a letter to 'Uqba b. Muslim, conveying a message from the amir al-mu'minin, the caliph. The caliph, Sahl wrote, had announced that the time had come to make the pilgrimage, the hajj, and had exhorted all Muslims to do so. Sahl urged 'Uqba, if he was able, to join him on the pilgrimage and to bring Sahl's camels with him, bearing the costs for one camel himself. Here, Sijpesteijn details the earliest documentary evidence for the hajj currently known, and offers important insight into the significance and meaning of the Muslim pilgrimage at the time of its composition.
Documents and the History of the Early Islamic World
Historians have long lamented the lack of contemporary documentary sources for the Islamic middle ages and the inhibiting effect this has had on our understanding of this critically important period. Although the field is richly served by surviving evidence, much of it is hard to locate, difficult to access, and philologically intractable. Presenting a mixture of historical studies and new editions of Greek, Arabic and Coptic material from the seventh to the fifteenth century C.E. from Egypt and Palestine, Documents and the History of the Early Islamic World explores the untapped wealth of documentary sources available in collections around the world and shows how this exciting material can be used for historical analysis.
Papyrology and the history of early Islamic Egypt
This collection includes editions of previously unpublished Greek, Coptic, and Arabic documents, historical and linguistic studies making use of documentary evidence and literary papyri, and an introduction to papyrology and its relevance for the study of early Islamic Egypt.
