Background
The natural abundance of nitrogen (δ
15
N) and carbon (δ
13
C) isotopes in animal tissues are used to estimate an animal’s efficiency in nitrogen utilization, and their feed conversion efficiency, especially in tropical grazing systems with prolonged protein restriction. It is postulated that selection for improving these two characteristics (δ
15
N and δ
13
C) would assist the optimisation of the adaptation in ever-changing environments, particularly in response to climate change. The aim of this study was to determine the heritability of δ
15
N and δ
13
C in the tail hair of tropically adapted beef cattle to validate their inclusion in genetic breeding programs.
Methods
In total, 492 steers from two breeds, Brahman (n = 268) and Droughtmaster (n = 224) were used in this study. These steers were managed in two mixed breed contemporary groups across two years (year of weaning): steers weaned in 2019 (n = 250) and 2020 (n = 242). Samples of tail switch hair representing hair segments grown during the dry season were collected and analysed for δ
15
N and δ
13
C with isotope-ratio mass spectrometry. Heritability and variance components were estimated in a univariate multibreed (and single breed) animal model in WOMBAT and ASReml using three generations of full pedigree.
Results
The estimated heritability of both traits was significantly different from 0, i.e. 0.43 ± 0.14 and 0.41 ± 0.15 for δ
15
N and δ
13
C, respectively. These traits had favourable moderate to high genetic and phenotypic correlations (− 0.78 ± 0.16 and − 0.40 ± 0.04, respectively). The study also provides informative single-breed results in spite of the limited sample size, with estimated heritability values of 0.37 ± 0.19 and 0.19 ± 0.17 for δ
15
N and δ
13
C in Brahman, and 0.36 ± 0.21 and 0.46 ± 0.22 for δ
15
N and δ
13
C in Droughtmaster, respectively.
Conclusions
The findings of this study show, for the first time, that the natural abundances of both nitrogen and carbon isotopes in the tail hair in cattle may be moderately heritable. With further research and validation, tail hair isotopes can become a practical tool for the large-scale selection of more efficient cattle.

Delay Dependent Local Stabilization Conditions for Time-delay Nonlinear Discrete-time Systems Using Takagi-Sugeno Models

We propose convex conditions for stabilization of nonlinear discrete-time systems with time-varying delay in states through a fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) modeling. These conditions are developed from a fuzzy Lyapunov-Krasovskii function and they are formulated in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). The results can be applied to a class of nonlinear systems that can be exactly represented by T-S fuzzy models inside a specific region called the region of validity. As a consequence, we need to provide an estimate of the set of safe initial conditions called the region of attraction such that the closed-loop trajectories starting in this set are assured to remain in the region of validity and to converge asymptotically to the origin. The estimate of the region of attraction is done with the aid of two sets: one dealing with the current state, and the other concerning the delayed states. Then, we can obtain the feedback fuzzy control law depending on the current state, xk, and the maximum delayed state vector, xk−d̅. It is shown that such a control law can locally stabilize the nonlinear discrete-time system at the origin. We also develop convex optimization procedures for the computation of the fuzzy control gains that maximize the estimates of the region of attraction. We present two examples to demonstrate the efficiency of the developed approach and to compare it with other approaches in the literature.

First microsatellite markers for the European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) and their application in analysis of parentage and genetic diversity

The European Robin is a small passerine bird associated with woodlands of Eurasia and North Africa. Despite being relatively widespread and common, little is known of the species’ breeding biology and genetic diversity. We used Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) to develop and characterize microsatellite markers for the European Robin, designing three multiplex panels to amplify 14 microsatellite loci. The level of polymorphism and its value for assessing parentage and genetic structure was estimated based on 119 individuals, including seven full families and 69 unrelated individuals form Poland’s Białowieża Primaeval Forest and an additional location in Portugal. All markers appeared to be highly variable. Analysis at the family level confirmed a Mendelian manner of inheritance in the investigated loci. Genetic data also revealed evidence for extra-pair paternity in one family. The set of markers that we developed are proven to be valuable for analysis of the breeding biology and population genetics of the European Robin.

The use of live yeast to increase intake and performance of cattle receiving low-quality tropical forages

Abstract
The objective was to evaluate the effects of a specific strain of live yeast (LY) on growth performance, fermentation parameters, feed efficiency, and bacterial communities in the rumen of growing cattle fed low-quality hay. In experiment (exp.) 1, 12 Droughtmaster bull calves (270 ± 7.6 kg initial body weight [BW]) were blocked by BW into two groups, allocated individually in pens, and fed ad libitum Rhodes grass hay (8.4% of crude protein [CP]) and 300 g/bull of supplement (52% CP) without (Control) or with LY (8 × 109 colony-forming unit [CFU]/d Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077; Lallemand Inc., Montreal, Canada) for 28 d, followed by 7 d in metabolism crates. Blood and rumen fluid were collected before feeding and 4 h after feeding. In exp. 2, for assessment of growth performance, 48 Charbray steers (329 ± 20.2 kg initial BW) were separated into two blocks by initial BW and randomly allocated into 12 pens. The steers were fed Rhodes grass hay (7.3% CP) and 220 g/steer of supplement (60% CP) without or with LY (8 × 109 CFU/d) for 42 d, after a 2-wk adaptation period. In exp. 1, fiber digestibility was calculated from total fecal collection, and, in exp 2, indigestible neutral detergent fiber (NDF) was used as a marker. Inclusion of LY increased (P = 0.03) NDF intake by 8.3% in exp. 1, without affecting total tract digestibility. No changes were observed in microbial yield or in the efficiency of microbial production. There was a Treatment × Time interaction (P < 0.01) for the molar proportion of short-chain fatty acids, with LY increasing propionate before feeding. Inclusion of LY decreased rumen ammonia 4 h after feeding (P = 0.03). The addition of LY reduced rumen bacterial diversity and the intraday variation in bacterial populations. Relative populations of Firmicutes and Verrucomicrobia varied over time (P < 0.05) only within the Control group. At the genus level, the relative abundance of an unclassified bacterial genus within the order Clostridiales, a group of cellulolytic bacteria, was reduced from 0 to 4 h after feeding in the Control group (P = 0.02) but not in the LY group (P = 1.00). During exp. 2, LY tended to increase average daily gain (ADG) (P = 0.08) and feed efficiency (P = 0.10), with no effect on NDF intake or digestibility. In conclusion, S. cerevisiae CNCM I-1077 reduced the intraday variation of rumen bacteria and increased the amount of NDF digested per day. These observations could be associated with the tendency of increased ADG and feed efficiency in growing cattle fed a low-quality forage.

Command Governor Strategy Based on Region of Attraction

The command governor ( CG ) is a useful strategy to avoid constraints violation in case of control reconfiguration or operational conditions changes, like switched systems mode changes. In general, the structure of the CG specializes in producing an alternative reference signal to drive a closed-loop system to the desired reference while avoiding constraints violations in the control signal, state-space, or combinations of them. In this paper, we propose a simple strategy that modifies the conventional structures of the CG and supervisor, yielding a switched rule based on the estimated controllers’ region of attraction. We present some simulations to illustrate the proposal’s potential and compare it with a competitor scheme exploiting a dwell-time approach. The results suggest that our approach adds new possibilities of CG and supervisor design, reducing the transition time between system modes and improving the closed-loop performance indexes

A Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model is used to represent exactly the nonlinear system in a restricted domain of the state space, called region of validity. The proposed stabilization condition is based on a Lyapunov-Krasovskii (L-K) function and it takes into account the region of validity to determine a set of initial conditions for which the actual closed-loop system trajectories are asymptotically stable and do not evolve outside the region of validity. This set of allowable initial conditions is determined from the level set associated to a fuzzy L-K function as a Cartesian product of two subsets: one characterizing the set of states at the initial instant and another for the delayed state sequence necessary to characterize the initial conditions. Finally, we propose a convex programming problem to design a fuzzy controller that maximizes the set of initial conditions taking into account the shape of the region of validity of the T-S fuzzy model. Numerical simulations are given to illustrate this proposal.

This paper deals with piecewise constant set-points tracking control of nonlinear discrete-time systems represented by Takagi-Sugeno models under actuators’ saturation. To this end, a fuzzy Proportional Integral-like (PI-like) discrete-time control scheme is considered, which consists of a proportional state feedback, an integral action over the tracking error, and an anti-windup action. All the control gains are obtained through a convex optimization procedure formulated in term of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). The proposed method yields a Parameter Distributed Compensation (PDC) PI-like control and a non-PDC anti-windup action structure. Due to the actuators’ saturation, a local approach is considered with a fuzzy Lyapunov function to ensure the local closed-loop stability, to provide an estimate of the region of attraction, and to compute the amplitude bounds of set-points changes. This latter issue allows delivering operational security by providing a bounded range for the set-points variation. To validate and illustrate the performance of the proposed tracking control approach, real-time experiments has been performed on an industrial oriented process consisting on the nonlinear level control of two interactive tanks.

Valproic acid (VPA; 2-
n
-propylpentanoic acid) is widely used as a major drug in the treatment of epilepsy and in the control of several types of seizures. Being a simple fatty acid, VPA is a substrate for the fatty acid β-oxidation (FAO) pathway, which takes place primarily in mitochondria. The toxicity of valproate has long been considered to be due primarily to its interference with mitochondrial β-oxidation. The metabolism of the drug, its effects on enzymes of FAO and their cofactors such as CoA and/or carnitine will be reviewed. The cumulative consequences of VPA therapy in inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) and the importance of recognizing an underlying IEM in cases of VPA-induced steatosis and acute liver toxicity are two different concepts that will be emphasized.

Effect of selected feed additives to improve growth and health of dairy calves

The aim was to evaluate the effect of different feed additives on intake, performance, and fecal consistency index (FCI) of dairy calves from 6-60 d of age and its residual effect 15 d after weaning. Fifty Holstein calves (38 ± 1.0 kg BW) were fed 5 L/d of milk plus starter feed until weaning, and corn silage and concentrate after weaning. The treatments were: control (CON), monensin (MON; 30 mg/kg of starter), probiotic E. faecium (PROB; 70 mg/kg of starter), essential oils (EO; 300 mg/kg of starter), or PROB + EO (EOPROB). Fecal score and dry matter intake (DMI) were measured daily, and animals were weighed every 15 d. A DNA extraction from feces was performed to identify the presence of microorganisms (E. coli, Hafnia, Shiguella, Lactobacillus spp, Enterococcus spp, and Enterococcus faecium NCIMB 10415) by PCR. Two 72-h digestibility trials were performed at days 20-28 and 50-56, by total fecal collection. The DMI before weaning was greater for EO (903.0 g/d) compared with MON (794.3 g/d) and EOPROB (783.1 g/d). The FCI decreased during pre-weaning for EO and MON. Average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency (FE) did not differ among treatments before weaning. After weaning, DMI and FCI did not differ among treatments. The EO had greater ADG (917.5 g/d) compared with CON (615.8 g/d) and PROB (592.6 g/d). The FE improved with EO (0.72 g/g) over CON (0.36 g/g), MON (0.49 g/g), and PROB (0.36 g/g). The PCR results showed absence of E. faecium NCIMB 10415 in animals fed PROB and CON. Animals fed PROB had greater intake of CP and NDF than animals fed EOPROB. The EO can be added to the dairy calf ration to improve fecal score and increase DMI. The pre-weaning FCI decrease with MON and increase with PROB.
