A Single-Port, Multiple-Access, Custom-Made Device Used in Laparoscopically Assisted Cryptorchidectomy in Standing Horses—A Preliminary Study
This study evaluates a new multiport device with single access to the abdominal cavity produced with routine hospital supplies that could be applied to laparoscopically assisted cryptorchidectomy in standing horses. Initially, the new device was evaluated on five cadavers of bovine fetuses (n = 5), placed assisted in a minilaparotomy performed in the flank region. Subsequently, the device was evaluated in four cryptorchid horses treated during the hospital routine. During the evaluation of the new device, the possibilities of exploring the abdominal cavity, inspection, and intra-abdominal manipulation with two Babcock forceps were verified. The possibilities were described, and surgical time data were recorded and analyzed using descriptive statistics. In the cadavers, a wide exploration of the abdominal cavity was possible, with a laparoscopic inspection through the right paralumbar fossa and manipulation of intra-abdominal structures with Babcock forceps inserted by the new device. In cryptorchid horses, laparoscopically assisted cryptorchidectomy with a new device was feasible in two patients, and in the others, it allowed the diagnosis of adhesions and ectopic locations in the inguinal region of testicles retained in the cavity. Therefore, the new device was efficient in exploring the inguinal region of cryptorchid horses in the standing position. The present study is preliminary and can support future studies that aim to improve the developed prototype.
Molecular detection of bovine immunodeficiency virus in water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) from the Amazon region, Brazil
Bovine immunodeficiency is a chronic progressive disease caused by a lentivirus that affects cattle and buffaloes. Although the infection has been described in cattle in some countries, including in Brazil, there are only two reports of infection in buffaloes: one in Pakistan and one in Cambodia. The aim of the present study was to survey the occurrence of bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV) in water buffaloes from the Amazon region, Pará state, Brazil. BIV proviral DNA was surveyed in 607 whole blood samples of water buffaloes from 10 farms located in the state of Pará using semi-nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (PCR-SN) to amplify the pol region of the viral genome. Of the 607 samples tested, 27 (4.4 %) were positive for BIV proviral DNA. The amplified fragments were confirmed by sequence analysis after cloning and nucleotide sequencing. The sequence obtained had 99 % similarity to the reference strain (R-29). The present study provides important epidemiological data because BIV was detected for the first time in water buffaloes in Brazil. Further, the results suggest the possibility of the virus being a risk factor for herd health because it may be a potential causal agent of chronic disease and, also may be associated to other infectious diseases.
Plant-based burgers made with Green Banana Biomass (GBB) associated with teff and chickpea derivatives
The objective of this study was to develop meat analog burgers using green banana biomass (GBB) combined with teff and chickpea derivatives, as well as to evaluate their chemical and technological quality, in addition to comparing them with industrialized meat and plant-based burgers. Four formulations (F1: 100% GBB; F2: 75% GBB; F3: 60% GBB; and F4: 50% GBB, with 25% teff and 25% chickpeas) were developed and compared to the following industrialized burgers: F5 (meat-based) and F6 (plant-based). All the samples were subjected to physical (initial/final weight, diameter, height, color, and texture) and chemical (pH, proximate composition, fiber, and caloric value) analyses. Among the treatments, F4 showed the highest initial weight (223.00 g) and final weight (201.66 g), initial diameter (12.33 cm) and final diameter (11.96 cm), and a reduction in height from 2.04 cm to 1.57 cm. In terms of firmness, F4 was significantly higher than that of the other treatments (p ≤ 0.05). Regarding its chemical composition, F4 presented a high protein content (10.25%) and energy value (285.30 kcal). The total fiber content for F1 to F4 was 3.62%, 3.74%, 3.97%, and 4.15%, respectively, while F6 (plant-based) reached 5.69%. These findings indicate that the combination of GBB with teff and chickpeas, especially in F4, was favorable for producing meat analog burgers with promising technological and nutritional properties.
Factors Associated with the Lifestyle of Pediatric Healthcare Professionals during the COVID-19 Pandemic
The objective of this study was to analyze the association between sociodemographic and occupational variables with the lifestyle of health professionals in pediatric units during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 407 health professionals working in four pediatric health units in the State of Bahia, northeast Brazil. The Fantastic Lifestyle Questionnaire and a questionnaire with sociodemographic and employment variables self-applied via Google Forms were used. The final binary logistic regression models revealed significant associations between those who received 3 to 5 minimum wages, without a marital relationship and with more than one employment relationship. Data suggest that these sociodemographic and occupational profiles are more exposed to risky lifestyle behaviors. The findings of this study demonstrated the need for greater attention to the health of health professionals in the pediatric field, as well as the promotion of initiatives that seek to value the work of these professionals and reduce the damage caused to their lifestyle, especially in a pandemic scenario.
