Camping at Kleanza Creek
2010
These days, there are so many products that make camping easier (i.e. RVs) but there's something alluring about doing it yourself: hacking up wood with a hatchet, stringing up a bear cache in a tree, and drinking beer by a crackling fire. [...] taking it one step further, there's the pragmatic approach of chopping building scraps with a skill saw for firewood, using the car as the depository of all things smelly, and, on forgetting the bottle opener at home, resorting to nearly shearing off the top of a bottle by smacking it on a picnic table. [...] I close my eyes as the fire sleepily glows orange and warm beside me.

The Trolls and Trails of Oliver Lake
2010
Small as it is, Oliver Lake is the most accessible picnic area near Rupert and, while it is right on the highway (while I'm there, there's an endless train of trucks trundling in and out of the Rod and Gun Club across the road) it's a great spot. In the winter, the lake is a skating rink; in the summer, the beach is an ideal location for an impromptu weenie roast.

In the Light of Night; Evening explorations when the sun doesn't set
2010
A fire crackles on the ground at the high-tide mark, where a couple of women and their dog take advantage of the weather and the perfect spot for a picnic. Wandering back and forth along the shoreline of Porcher Island, we dragged lines until we caught a couple of Chinook worth keeping (not to mention several rock cod not worth keeping).

All of its fifteen songs, composed by different artists, were written to capture some facet of our coastal town, and each was performed and recorded for the CD by Rupert residents, past and present. Just a few weeks prior to the recording session she was hit by a truck, suffering all manners of bruises and -- a singer's worst nightmare -- several broken ribs.

Bull--a 14-year-old singer-songwriter and dancer--has carried the community spirit with style, making her musical debut on the centennial compilation with her song, \"Never Do You Wrong,\" a stirring tribute to the town of her childhood.

There's nothing like a cabin on the lake
2010
Everywhere I've lived I've had access to hiking, rock climbing, boating, skiing, and all kinds of other outdoorsy pursuits, but nowhere I've lived has had such a vast untouched wilderness so close to home. There are a selection of books fit for a cabin in the woods: \"How to Escape From the Rat Race\" sits on the table and its chapters on practical techniques for living off the land are worn with by the countless thumbs that have pondered over its pages.

Of Mountains and Interior Decorating
2010
(Stay with me here.) Downhill mountain biking necessitates the same kind of sight-reading practice as drywalling or flooring, piecing together the trail as it unfolds about ten feet in front of your leading tire.
