ZURICH-- Swiss watchmaker Breitling will unveil its first women's range next spring, as the company exploits the financial muscle of its private equity owners to expand products and geography.

BIEL, Switzerland-- Nick Hayek challenged rivals Compagnie Financière Richemont and LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton by warning that Switzerland's biggest watchmaker would stop supplying crucial movements to its major competitors after the expiry of their current contracts.

Baselworld is the world's biggest watch and jewelry trade show, held annually at the large trade-fair site of Switzerland's third biggest city. Hotel prices skyrocket and trendy locations get booked months in advance as the city of 170,000 bordering France and Germany swells with foreign and Swiss visitors.

For the second year, Baselworld is taking place under a cloud. The blues that characterized the market last year haven't lifted, despite some glimmers of recovering demand and the relatively positive note struck by watch brands showing at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in January.

High ceilings and starkly contrasting black-and-white decor emphasize the classic brasserie look, reinforced by traditional dishes like steak frites and mussels.
