يذكر ان الرواية صدرت بالإنجليزية عام 1945، وهي تستلهم من سيرة سمارت (1913ــ1986) وعلاقتها بالشاعر البريطاني جورج باركر (1913ــ1991) حيث تحكي قصة فتاة كندية تحب شاعرا متزوجا وتنجب منه. ورغم رفض الأخير الانفصال عن زوجته للعيش معها، إلا أنها تصر على ملاحقته حتى حين انتقاله للعيش في الولايات المتحدة.
