Barriers to Mentoring Women of Color for Corporate Leadership: Implications for Organizations
2018
Mentoring as a human capital development initiative is critical to leadership development for organizational sustainment. Previous research has identified that barriers to mentoring relationships for women of color in organizations exist, confirmed by the finding that a factor in barriers to corporate promotion for women is a lack of mentoring. This dissertation explores the implications that barriers to workplace mentoring relationships may have for organizations from the perspective of women of color. Findings suggest that barriers to mentoring relationships experienced and perceived by women of color have evolved in presentation or diminished since those found by previous research. This research also identified new barriers to mentoring relationships including those attributable to the misunderstanding and underutilization of human capital. Among the practical recommendations is that organizations should consider fostering a climate of mentoring as an approach to diversity and inclusion initiatives, as well as full employee engagement. Recommendations for future study include a similar study with a focus on a single firm or on other women of color.

Comparing the effectiveness of ground-penetrating radar in locating stockade features at prehistoric and historic archaeological sites

The use of ground-penetrating radar has become increasingly popular in an archaeological context in recent years. The geophysical technique is useful in the detection and mapping of subsurface features at archaeological sites, and provides a minimally-invasive option that may help preserve the site for future research. This study examines the effectiveness of ground-penetrating radar when used to search for a stockade and associated features at two sites of differing time periods. The two archaeological sites surveyed in this study are the Mary Rinn site (36IN29) in Indiana County, Pennsylvania and the Fort Shirley site (36HU94) in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. The Mary Rinn site dates to the Late Woodland Period in Pennsylvania, while the Fort Shirley site was a frontier fort used during the French and Indian War. The purpose of the study is to determine the geophysical technique's ability to detect such features, and to compare the results between a prehistoric and historic archaeological site.

Synthesis, structural characterization, and NMR spectroscopy of late transition metal and main group chalcogenides

The goal of this research has been to gain insight into the reaction chemistry of chalcogenide complexes by developing$\\sp{125}$ Te and$\\sp{77}$ Se NMR spectroscopy. To obtain this goal, it was necessary to synthesize new, novel chalcogenides. Several late transition metal chalcogenides have been synthesized using conventional solution techniques which involve mixing a metal salt with a polychalcogenide source. This method is employed in the syntheses of$\\rm\\lbrack PPh\\sb4\\rbrack\\sb2\\lbrack M(Te\\sb4)\\sb2\\rbrack$(M = Hg, Cd, and Zn) and the (MTe $\\sb7\\rbrack\\sp{\\rm n-}$anions (M = Ag and Au, n = 3; M = Hg, n = 2). The reactivity of the (MTe $\\sb7\\rbrack\\sp{\\rm n-}$anions with activated acetylenes is explored. The desire to obtain new compounds resulted in the search for other synthetic routes to obtain transition metal chalcogenides such as reacting a binary chalcogenide with potassium metal in liquid ammonia. The linear (HgSe $\\sb2\\rbrack\\sp{2-}$anion forms from the reaction of HgSe $\\sb2$in liquid ammonia in the presence of (K(2.2.2-cryptand))$\\sp+$ . A number of antimony and arsenic selenides and sulfides such as (K(2.2.2-cryptand))$\\rm\\sb2\\lbrack Sb\\sb2Se\\sb4\\rbrack,$(K(2.2.2-cryptand))$\\rm\\sb2\\lbrack As\\sb2S\\sb4\\rbrack,$(K(2.2.2-cryptand))$\\rm\\sb2\\lbrack As\\sb{10}S\\sb3\\rbrack,$(K(2.2.2-cryptand))$\\sb2$( $\\rm As\\sb4Se\\sb6\\rbrack,$K(2.2.2-cryptand))$\\rm\\sb2\\lbrack Sb\\sb2Se\\sb6\\rbrack,$and (K(2.2.2-cryptand))$\\rm\\sb3\\lbrack As\\sb3Se\\sb6\\rbrack,$have been synthesized using this technique by varying the choice of starting material. These liquid ammonia reactions also yielded serendipitous results including the formation of (K(2.2.2-cryptand))$\\rm\\sb2\\lbrack \\mu$ -O- $\\rm\\{\\mu$ - $\\rm O\\sb2Si(CH\\sb3)\\sb2\\}\\sb2(GeSe)\\sb2\\rbrack$and (K(2.2.2-cryptand))$\\rm\\sb3\\ \\lbrack Sb\\{Se\\sb2C\\sb2(CN)\\sb2\\}\\sb2\\rbrack.$Another solvent employed in the dissolution of binary chalcogenides is ethylenediamine. This type of extraction was utilized in the isolation of several arsenic selenide compounds, including$\\rm\\lbrack NEt\\sb4\\rbrack\\sb2\\lbrack\\sb2 As\\sb2Se\\sb6\\rbrack, \\lbrack enH\\rbrack \\lbrack AsSe\\sb6\\rbrack{\\cdot}$ 2.2.2-cryptand, (NEt $\\rm\\sb4\\rbrack \\lbrack AsSe\\sb8\\rbrack,$and ((en) $\\sb2$ In(SeAs(Se)Se $\\sb2$ )) en. The synthesis, characterization and spectroscopy of all the above compounds are discussed in the following pages.
