\ESTREITEMENT BENDÉ\: MARIE DE FRANCE'S \GUIGEMAR\ AND THE EROTICS OF TIGHT DRESS
2008
The Lais of Marie de France, a compilation of twelve short Breton romances written in the 1160s and dedicated to a 'noble reis' who was possibly (though not certainly) Henry II, feature lavish costume as a sign of aristocratic magnificence and prowess.7 The Lai de Guigemar, the first in the collection as it appears in British Library, Harley MS 978, sets the pattern, and adheres to several other generic conventions of romance: the eponymous protagonist falls in love with a seemingly unattainable woman (she is married to a jealous husband who keeps her under lock and key), the two experience love in the typical Ovidian sense (as a constraining malady that affects body and mind), elements of magic infuse the narrative (from a talking hind who curses Guigemar to a magical ship that transports lovers to foreign lands), lovers exchange gifts that affirm their commitment (a knot in Guigemar's shirt and a belt for the lady), and these gifts serve as the means by which the lovers will recognize each other if separated and then reunited.

The Power of Partners: A Qualitative Study on the Effects of Long-Term Partnerships during Writing Workshop
2017
The purpose of this study is to determine how long-term partnerships will support second grade students during Writing Workshop. The specific goals of the study are to examine the effects long-term partnerships utilized during Writing Workshop will have on both student achievement and student engagement. Student interviews pre and post study, student writing, along with weekly student reflections were analyzed. The group of students who were the focus of the study demonstrated increased engagement when participating in Writing Workshop. The students also demonstrated increased writing proficiency throughout the duration of the study. The benefits of utilizing long-term peer partnerships during Writing Workshop are considered.

Estreitement bendé: Marie de France's Guigemar and the erotics of tight dress
2008
Tight dress, belts and knots appear as signs of aristocratic beauty, sexual continence and military prowess in medieval literature generally, but acquire particular historical import when read in light of changing social attitudes toward fashion during the reign of Henry II, 1154-1189. The \"Lais\" of Marie de France, a compilation of 12 short Breton romances written in the 1160s and dedicated to a noble reis who was probably Henry II, feature lavish costumes as a sign of aristocratic magnificence and prowess. The \"Lai de Guigemar\" sets the pattern, and adheres to several other generic conventions of romance. Yet Marie's use of the tight dress in this \"lai\" is anything but conventional. It is argued that fitted attire in \"Guigemar\" expresses not only noble beauty but also Marie's pedagogical enterprise for laity and clergy. Rather than espouse the clerical view, which perceives tight-lacing as sexually licentious, Marie uses fitted attire in \"Guigemar\" to underscore the erotic body and then its meritoriously disciplined sexuality.

Learning and living GREEN
2009
Just 20 miles Southwest of the Danforth Campus of Washington University in St Louis, MO, there sits a great opportunity to see what may be the greenest facility ever built in modern times. The new Living Learning Center, part of the university's Tyson Research Center, is a building that has been constructed in an effort to receive a living building' certification. The certification is earned by using some of the most rigorous green and sustainable standards for a builder: the Cascadia Region Green Building Council's Living Building Challenge which attempts to define the highest measure of sustainability that is possible with current technology, methods and knowledge. Choosing to add a sustainable, flagship structure onto the Tyson Research Center is an emblematic decision, considering the mission of Tyson and all of the faculty and researchers that work at the center. It is already established that the Living Learning Center does not harm the environment.

The synthesis of α-methyl amino acid building blocks and their incorporation into disulfide and lanthionine peptidomimetic opioids
2004
There are three main types of opioid receptors, μ, δ, and κ. While μ-selective agonists are efficient at producing potent analgesia, they produce a number of unwanted side-effects including respiratory depression, gastrointestinal inhibition, suppression of the immune system, and physical dependence. It has been our focus to synthesize δ-selective agonists which have been shown to have an improved side effect profile as compared to μ-selective agonists. Our goal was to develop peptidomimetic enkephalin analogs which retain the δ-potency of DPDPE but exhibit an increase in in vivo activity. A versatile enantioselective synthesis of α-methylcysteine was accomplished, and this peptidomimetic building block was incorporated into a family of disulfide enkephalin analogs. The disulfide analog with DPen in position two and α-MeDCys in position five ([DPen2, αMeDCys 5]E) was very δ-selective and an order of magnitude more potent than DPDPE in vivo. The analog with DCys in position two and α-MeDCys in position five ([DCys2, αMeDCys 5]E) is the most potent δ-selective enkephalin analog synthesized to date, with picomolar activity in vivo. Based on the biological activity of the α-methylcysteine containing disulfide enkephalin analogs, a family of lanthionine enkephalin analogs were designed and synthesized. In these α-methylcysteine containing enkephalin analogs the disulfide bridge was replaced with a thioether linkage. Two compounds exhibited promising biological activity. The first was [DPen2 L, αMeCys5L]E which was very δ-selective and two orders of magnitude more potent than DPDPE in vivo. The second was [DCys2L, αMeCys5 L]E which retained δ-selectivity but exhibited subnanomolar activity in vivo. A large scale synthesis of lanthionine enkephalin analog [DVal 2L, Ala5L]E was carried out in solution producing over 600 mg of HPLC purified compound. This δ-selective lanthionine enkephalin analog was evaluated as an analgesic in an osteosarcoma model in mice. It reversed tactile allodynia caused by the osteolytic osteosarcoma in a dose-dependent fashion. The δ-selective analog [DVal2 L, Ala5L]E was 4.5 times more potent than morphine in this model and exhibited a longer duration of action. This analog was reversed by naltrindole indicating that its analgesic effects are a result of interaction with δ-opioid receptors. Based on the successful enantioselective synthesis of α-methylcysteines, a versatile route to optically pure α-methyl amino acids was developed. The common intermediate is Bn2N-α-Me-Ser-β-lactone which is regioselectively opened with a wide variety of Grignard-derived organocuprates.
