Industrial Revolutions and Automation: Tracing Economic and Social Transformations of Manufacturing
The rapid evolution of automation has become a defining phenomenon of the modern era, underscoring its great influence on industries and economies. Since the First Industrial Revolution, advancements in technology have consistently transformed manufacturing processes, progressively introducing mechanization, electrification, and digitalization. The current Fifth Industrial Revolution incorporates these changes through the integration of robotics, cobots (collaborative robots), and AI-driven (Artificial Intelligence) systems, representing unprecedented levels of human–machine collaboration. This paper examines the historical evolution of automation and industrial robotics and, based on the current state of the art, highlights the current standing of its economic and societal impacts. The adoption of automation and robotization in the supply chain and manufacturing has significantly enhanced productivity and precision, reducing errors and operational costs. However, it has also contributed to job displacement, especially in repetitive and manual tasks, necessitating the reskilling of the human workforce. Automation brings two main financial effects: it reduces long-term labor costs and boosts efficiency, but the upfront investments in advanced robotics and infrastructure are significant. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by automation, which ensures a balanced approach to economic growth, workforce development, and technological adoption across all sectors influenced by successive industrial revolutions.
Success factors in product development projects: expert opinions
Successful product development is a common challenge for technical and management experts. The increasing pressure on time reduction and cost savings while enhancing product features, requires rethinking project management methods. This paper analyses the opinions of product development experts about the success factors of product development projects. A voluntary online survey was used for data collection in 2020. The study confirms that development engineers, test engineers, project managers, and product development managers have partially different approaches to important success factors. Precise regulation and focus on collaboration are considered essential topics. The results show that knowledge management and collaboration with other organizational units must be improved. Enhancing the interpretation of project success and forcing the better utilization of lessons learned or module information can contribute to sustainable success.
Evaluation of product development success: A student perspective
The time pressure on new product development under unpredictable conditions requires the renewal of the project management approach that suggests the prominent role of project managerial competencies in achieving project success. Project management education must be adjusted to understand students' opinions in the field. The study uses a survey among Hungarian engineering, business, and IT higher education students. The analysis aims to explore opinions about the main barriers to successful product development projects, and the expected ways of regulating the project by ANOVA and principal component analysis. The responses of 126 students confirm the appreciation of management competencies. Gaps in team composition, inadequate communication, common changes in the plans, and the lack of experience in similar development tasks are considered to be the main contributors to product development project failures. Collaboration and competition with external partners were found to be less essential factors. Students believe that regulation of the work is necessary, but the project team should be trusted to establish it. Beyond developing the curricula, the experience of this study can promote the successful execution of collaborative projects between companies and higher education institutions. It can establish expected student competencies to quickly become effective project team members.
The connection between ADT and evolutionary methods in product development
This paper presents similarities and connection points of Autogenetic Design Theory (ADT) and evolutionary methods. During a short historical overview, ADT is positioned in a timeline. The authors show where common issue points between the two approaches are. Then demonstrate how to use these methods, to avoid a long progress of iteration and tests of several versions and directions. Via an example study of truck floor design, benefits of evolutionary methods are highlighted and made understandable for readers.
Q-sort evaluation of the emerging technologies: engineer approach
Foreseeing the future in an increasingly and unpredictably changing environment has a crucial role. The annual reports of Gartner’s Hype Curve for Emerging Technologies offer a multipurpose, multifactorial overview of new technologies. The study used the content of the 2024 model. Q-sort methodology was used on a sample of 38 engineering experts from different fields to check the existing opinion patterns regarding the listed emerging technologies. The results revealed competing opinion patterns with a leading role of artificial intelligence in 2-5 years. The study has a methodological implication that Gartner’s results can be further processed for industrial or corporate-level evaluations and comparisons. A technical management challenge is building strategies on the expected and accepted technologies to achieve competitive advantages.
System Usability Analysis of Engineering Management Software
Supporting engineering processes requires a managerial approach as well. The usability and acceptance of the related procedures, tools, and software can significantly influence the performance of the company. The paper presents a case study of project management administration software at a multinational company. System Usability Scale was used to explore the satisfaction of the development experts in the field. The results show the need to develop the software and procedures, especially in the design of the administration process, to boost the engineering work.
Review on the Fifth Industrial Revolution
Industry 5.0, introduced by the European Commission in 2021, represents a shift from technology-driven automation toward a human-centric, sustainable, and resilient industrial paradigm. Building on Industry 4.0’s digital foundation, it emphasizes collaboration between humans and machines, environmental responsibility, and adaptability to disruptions. This paper reviews recent academic literature to clarify the concept of Industry 5.0 and to identify its core pillars: human-centricity, sustainability, and resilience. Using a structured search in Scopus, IEEE Xplore, and Google Scholar (2019–2025), the study analyzes definitions, principles, and enabling technologies. The findings highlight how these pillars interconnect and redefine industrial strategy, offering guidance for future research and practical implementation.
The Eighth Agria Conference on Innovative Vehicle Technologies and Automation Solutions, InnoVeTAS2024
Even though the last few years were filled with all kinds of challenges for companies and universities; we are happy to host once again, the Eighth Agria Conference on Innovative Vehicle Technologies and Automation Solutions, also known as InnoVeTAS2024. This conference series was started as a subset event of the International Pneumobile competition, in order to make it more attractive to students and professors from a wide range of universities in Europe. Today, the InnoVeTAS conference has become an independent scientific forum, which is traditionally held in May. This being the eigtht conference in the series; our event has become one of the major technical and scientific talks in Heves County! Additionally, we are now visible on the venue of Hungarian national conferences! In cooperation with IÓP Publishing, this year’s conference proceedings will also be the third time, that it will have been listed in the Scopus index, which is useful for high level researchers. List of Honorary chairs, Scientific Committee, Editorial Committee, Organizing Committee, Invited Speakers, Organization Institution and Sponsor are available in this Pdf.
