Pergamon Museum Berlin : collection of classical antiquities, Museum of the Ancient Near East, Museum of Islamic Art
The world-renowned Pergamon Museum in Berlin houses three collections under a single roof: the Museum of the Ancient Near East, the Museum of Islamic Art and parts of the Collection of Classical Antiquities. Treasures spanning several millennia, most notably the unique full-scale reconstructions of ancient architecture - the Ishtar Gate and Processional Way of Babylon, the Mshatta Facade as well as the Pergamon Altar and the Market Gate from Miletus - draw 1.5 million visitors every year. In 1999 the Pergamon Museum and the Museum Island were added to the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage sites. With its concise texts and richly illustrated pages, this volume guides the reader through the magnificent collections. --Page 4 of cover.
New museums : intentions, expectations, challenges
The past decade was characterised by a real museum boom which persists today. Throughout the world museums have been built that are as unique as the art they contain, and the process continues. This volume assembles approximately 15 of these museums, designed and realised by the who's who of the architect scene. The architecture of the museums is an artwork in itself. They include buildings such as the Changsha Meixihu International Culture & Art Centre designed by Zaha Hadid and the Zeitz Museum for contemporary African art in Cape Town. With designs that extend from exciting to dynamic to sensuously beautiful the architects have created places of encounter, communication and inspiration which make the world of art accessible to visitors in ways that are not always mapped out by curators. The volume shows magnificent photographs and documents through drawings the development of the buildings as well as the challenges of architecture today.
The Berlin school : films from the Berliner schule
\"The informal movement that critics like to call the Berlin School,\" as director Christoph Hochhèausler puts it, is a loose affiliation of filmmakers who emerged around the time the Berlin Wall fell. The founding figures--Thomas Arslan, Christian Petzold, and Angela Schanelec--and their younger colleagues are not bound by a manifesto or by any singular aesthetic. Nonetheless, their observant portrayals of characters in flux offer a compelling cinematic expression of the search for new identities in a time of societal change. The films of the Berlin School have resonated profoundly since the mid-1990s, making it one of the most influential auteur movements to emerge from Europe in the new millennium.
