Excavations at the Etowah site in northwestern Georgia during the summer of 1954 resulted in some of the most remarkable discoveries in the history of the Southeastern archaeology. That season also marked the effective beginning of the author's career in the field, and his lifelong debt to his mentor and friend, Lewis H. Larson, Jr., who directed the field work at Mound C during that extraordinary season and the others that followed under the auspices of the Georgia Historical Commission.

La Mojarra Stela 1, a 2nd-Century Mesoamerican carved monument, provides data on the previously unrepresented period between Olmec culture and the literate Classic civilizations. John Justeson and Terrence Kaufman have succeeded in translating the hieroglyphics.
