Letters Health care reform debate
Gov. [Rick Scott] proclaims that Obamacare's Medicaid expansion will cost Florida $1.9 billion a year. Wrong again, Governor. First, the increased costs are not fully effective until 2020. The federal government will, in fact, pay 100 percent for three years, and that decreases to 90 percent in 2020. And, as pointed out in a recent nonpartisan report, Florida's own health care agency estimates that expenses relating to the expansion will increase to only $500 million in 2020. In light of Congressman Allen West's opinion that people receiving Social Security disability benefits is a form of \"modern 21st-century slavery,\" one can only conclude that he believes military veterans receiving government disability checks and/or retirement checks is a form of slavery as well. I am a Social Security recipient, a military veteran and a retired police officer living off of a government pension. So, I guess I am also \"economically dependant\" on the government. If this is Congressman Allen West's definition of slavery, then I suspect there are many of his supporters who would like to be in my position and - by his definition ? be a \"slave\" to President Obama.
LAUGHING MATTERS
Not doing anything about the economy in Ireland. Isn't that the EU and IMF's responsibility? Do you really want the U.S. to take a major role in improving Ireland's economy? If [Obama] did, I'm sure you would be critical of him for getting involved at the expense of ignoring the American economy.
Let Broward State Attorney do job
Unless I'm mistaken, it is not the job of the Public Defender's Office to determine the status of a case put before prosecutors. Mr. [Howard Finkelstein] was not privy to the facts of the case, facts that indicated the case couldn't be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. His office was not involved in the proceedings at all. One March 12 letter writer disagrees with the opinions of Stephen Goldstein, so he calls him a \"worshiping fan of Joseph Goebbels of Nazi Germany,\" the organizer of German citizens' attacks on Jews and the minister of Nazi propaganda. Another letter writer disagrees with Gary Stein's article on pit bulls, so she calls him a \"complete idiot.\" I was disheartened, but not surprised, by the abysmal turnout in Tuesday's local South Florida elections. Michael Mayo's column, \"Apathy the biggest winner in March local elections,\" was right that \"all politics is local.\"
BLUE, PURPLE, RED: 2012 FROM LEFT TO RIGHT NEW ONLINE FEATURE LETTERS
In Anthony Man's article regarding Rep. Allen West's district, West said, \"I like beating the odds. If you go back and if you study history, Alexander the Great never had odds better than 1:3 against him and he never lost a battle.\" What doesn't surprise me is the left's attempt to follow President [Barack Obama]'s insistence that the fault of our woes lies with everything and everyone but him. Did he not run on hope and change? How many are hopeful or content with the change he has brought about? Stifling business growth, health care \"reform\" (gotten your 2012 health benefits statement yet?) and the appointment of more \"czars\" all wreaking havoc on the economy. Wasn't he also the one who talked about transparency? \"I will allow five days of public comment before I sign any bills.\" \"I'll put the health care negotiations on C-SPAN.\"
Letters Time to correct a lie
I would like to respond to the author of a recent letter printed in your paper from Erik H. Schot. He repeated the oft-misquoted line from a speech given by President Obama saying \"small business owners didn't build their businesses, but that someone else, i.e., government, did...\" This inflammatory misrepresentation has been corrected repeatedly by every reputable news organization. In this speech, the president was referring to the education and infrastructure systems, paid for with federal, state and local tax money, which help entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses. THAT is what we small business owners didn't build. And yes, I am a small business owner myself. We teach our children not to lie. To be truthful. To be honest. And if we do tell that lie, we are told by our parents, our school teachers and our religious leaders to face up. To apologize. To be truthful and hopefully we will be forgiven. Then at night we will be able to put a clear head upon our pillow. A head without the heavy weight of the lie. We had owned up. We had honored the ninth commandment. The one that has come to mean \"thou shall not lie.\" Credit: [Carol Gordon], Cooper City; ; [Angela Bomford], Davie; [Myrna Yudenfreund], Boca Raton; [Deborah Sheen], Palm Beach Gardens; [Ed Swichar], Delray Beach; [Jennifer DeVitto], Hollywood
Letters Paper's focus on Romney biased
President [Obama] has a mega-facility in Chicago manned by hundreds -- not cheap! Talk has been that Obama's election chest is going to reach $1 billion dollars. Isn't it only fair to publish the amounts donated to Obama's campaign and who those donors are? In a recent letter regarding real cost of high gas prices, the author states that \"Obama wants to drive the price up (of gas),\" and that \"Washington does nothing.\" A recent letter stated the \"Afghan people\" drove the Russians out of Afghanistan and can also \"throw out the Taliban.\" But the Taliban are part of the Afghan people, unlike the Russians and Americans.
MEDIA GIVE LIBERALS FREE PASS LETTERS
Do Solyndra, \"Fast & Furious\" and a high gas rate no president can control trump all that? I guess if you're just an [Obama] hater it does. What do fair-minded voters think? Regarding \"Contraception and religion,\" the opinion expressed in a letter argues that the issue of mandating health care coverage is similar to \"marriage for same sex couples\" in that \"the government is taking the proper First Amendment stance of ignoring religion.\" The government does not mandate the Catholic Church or any other private institution to engage in that practice. The difference therefore is between \"allow\" and \"mandate.\" All free people should be concerned.
