THE STATE OF PUBLIC SCHOOL CLASSROOM GUITAR IN THE UNITED STATES
Martha Masters, president of the Guitar Foundation of America, was enrolled in a guitar class while attending Robinson High School in Fairfax, Virginia, in the early 1990s. Her class was taught by well-known music educator, lecturer, and director of the Guitar& Accessories Marketing Association's (GAMA) popular Summer Guitar Workshops, Glen McCarthy. At the time, it was one of very few public schools in the country that offered classroom guitar. Besides becoming a world-class player, she has also become a world leader in guitar education, one who has supported and will continue to support it in the schools. Did attending guitar class in high school motivate Dr. Masters to go to college and major in guitar? That is her story to tell. However, data indicates that less than 5 percent of students taking guitar while in high school go to college to major in the instrument. This is also the approximate percentage of high school band and orchestra students who major in music in college.
Knights get it right on this night
\"I've been waiting for this team to beat a legitimate team on the road,\" said [John Camardella], whose team is now 9-8 overall and 3-2 in the MSL East. \"We scouted them hard. This was the end of the first round in the East. It was very important to finish above .500 in the East.\" \"We really opened ourselves up,\" [Alex Toth] said. \"It's a big win for us. Everyone really contributed. We don't win here a lot. It's nice to come off with a win against our big rival.\" \"We're real proud of our kids for the way they battled back in the second half,\" [Kevin Katovich] said. \"They certainly didn't give up. We threw stuff out there at them and our kids did a good job of adjusting on the fly.\"
Barrington, BG find post-holiday success
\"Fighting the juggernaut is a hard thing,\" said Buffalo Grove coach Jamie Klotz. \"This is a meet we've pointed to all season. It was exciting for us to be able to swim the level of competition that Barrington offers.\" \"I wasn't really happy with where I've been (in the 500),\" he said. \"I got in tonight and changed my strategy a little bit. Normally, I try to go out a little easier. Before the meet, we talked about going out hard in all our races so that's what I did. It worked out well for me.\" \"At this point in the season, everyone's coming off winter break and everyone's expecting to be tired,\" he said. \"All things considered, we did a really good job of showing up today. We had great efforts all the way around.\"
Conant speeds up after intense holiday training

It helps us swim well and compete well in the meets.\" \"That's something you always think about coming out of winter practice - has it paid off? It definitely has,\" said Hersey coach Tod Schwager. \"We had a lot of good swims out of the guys today.\" \"[Tony Ponzo] really started kicking it in gear today,\" Schwager said. \"There's some leaders that are really starting to drive the team. A lot of people are either at their best or second to their best. It's good to still drop time even if you're swimming tired.\"
Hawks finally finish Grens
\"We're playing better,\" [Megan Fischer] said. \"We have had a hard time once (we've gotten) a big lead. We need to be more consistent. We can't afford to get 10-point leads and then let them slide.\" \"We did fine,\" said assistant Elk Grove coach Dan Crivellone, who was filling in for head coach Jim Wills, who was out sick. \"We did everything that we wanted to do. I can't complain.\" \"[Hoffman] is an excellent team - we played them 100-percent better than the last time we played them,\" added Crivellone of an earlier tournament loss. \"We don't quit. They played their hearts out. They're just going to have to learn how to win these games.\"
ND slows Viator's mo
\"That doesn't mean anything,\" said St. Viator coach Joe Majkowski of his team's successes heading into the game. \"(We didn't play well on) both ends of the floor. (Notre Dame's defense) was a part of it - what we were trying to do was also a part of it.\" \"We have to figure out (how to recover from games like this). That's why we have meetings,\" Majkowski said. \"You learn from what you didn't do well. Hopefully, that's what we can take from it.\" [ndbbk_1ps010407dw] DANIEL WHITE/dwhite@@dailyherald.com Notre Dame's [Zach Abraham] gets a prone pass away between St. Viator's Matt O'Malley, left, and [Michael Landuyt] on Friday night in Niles. We did a great job of making some things happen for us.\" \"I like to take shots when they're open,\" [Drew Crawford] said. \"When I'm covered, I like to distribute - I'm confident in my teammates.\" \"Drew makes so many things happen for us,\" Kramer added. \"If he's not scoring, he's finding somebody else to score. He draws so many people that he opens up others to score.\"
Wheeling in familiar spot; Saxons, Cougars win
\"It should be a good matchup,\" said Wheeling coach Shelly Wiegel. \"It's something we look forward to in this tournament. It's our third year in the tournament and all three years we've played them for the championship.\" \"We had kind of a rough start - we didn't come out as strong as we wanted to,\" said Wheeling's Ashley Wilson. \"But we did a pretty good job of adjusting in the second half.\" \"The first half was outstanding,\" said Schaumburg coach Bill Murmann of the Saxons' effort. \"It may have become a little bit too easy for us. We became very disinterested in the second half and that's dangerous.\"

He got rebounds, he got kids into spaces. He did a good job of doing what needed to be done to win that game. They dictated the entire game.\"
