Extremophilic and biomimetic architectures for space
Extremophilic organisms, living beings with amazing capacities of adaptation to the most hostile and deadly environments to all other living beings, they demonstrate natural adaptation solutions, captivating for the implantation of the life on other planets as much as for the brutal changes of ours. Since the dawn of time, man has used nature as a source of inspiration to innovate and design with a key word, adaptation. This is biomimicry, because nature is the best technology in the world: millions of years of feedback and no copyright…
Multiscale Analysis of Tropical Cyclone Kinematic Structure from Airborne Doppler Radar Composites
The multiscale inner-core structure of mature tropical cyclones is presented via the use of composites of airborne Doppler radar analyses. The structure of the axisymmetric vortex and the convective and turbulent-scale properties within this axisymmetric framework are shown to be consistent with many previous studies focusing on individual cases or using different airborne data sources. On the vortex scale, these structures include the primary and secondary circulations, eyewall slope, decay of the tangential wind with height, low-level inflow layer and region of enhanced outflow, radial variation of convective and stratiform reflectivity, eyewall vorticity and divergence fields, and rainband signatures in the radial wind, vertical velocity, vorticity, and divergence composite mean and variance fields. Statistics of convective-scale fields and how they vary as a function of proximity to the radius of maximum wind show that the inner eyewall edge is associated with stronger updrafts and higher reflectivity and vorticity in the mean and have broader distributions for these fields compared with the outer radii. In addition, the reflectivity shows a clear characteristic of stratiform precipitation in the outer radii and the vorticity distribution is much more positively skewed along the inner eyewall than it is in the outer radii. Composites of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) show large values along the inner eyewall, in the hurricane boundary layer, and in a secondary region located at about 2–3 times the radius of maximum wind. This secondary peak in TKE is also consistent with a peak in divergence and in the variability of vorticity, and they suggest the presence of rainbands at this radial band.
Towards Real-Time Volatile Memory Forensics: Frameworks, Methods, and Analysis
Memory forensics (or memory analysis) is a relatively new approach to digital forensics that deals exclusively with the acquisition and analysis of volatile system memory. Because each function performed by an operating system must utilize system memory, analysis of this memory can often lead to a treasure trove of useful information for forensic analysts and incident responders. Today's forensic investigators are often subject to large case backlogs, and incident responders must be able to quickly identify the source and cause of security breaches. In both these cases time is a critical factor. Unfortunately, today's memory analysis tools can take many minutes or even hours to perform even simple analysis tasks. This problem will only become more prevalent as RAM prices continue to drop and systems with very large amounts of RAM become more common. Due to the volatile nature of data resident in system RAM it is also desirable for investigators to be able to access non-volatile copies of system RAM that may exist on a device's hard drive. Such copies are often created by operating systems when a system is being suspended and placed into a power safe mode. This dissertation presents work on improving the speed of memory analysis and the access to non-volatile copies of system RAM. Specifically, we propose a novel memory analysis framework that can provide access to valuable artifacts orders of magnitude faster than existing tools. We also propose two new analysis techniques that can provide faster and more resilient access to important forensic artifacts. Further, we present the first analysis of the hibernation file format used in modern versions of Windows. This work allows access to evidence in non-volatile copies of system RAM that were not previously able to be analyzed. Finally, we propose future enhancements to our memory analysis framework that should address limitations with the current design. Taken together, this dissertation represents substantial work towards advancing the field of memory forensics.
I Nationens Litterära Minne: Sven Lidmans Romaner Stensborg och Huset Med De Gamla Fröknarna I Presskritiken Och Litteraturhistorien
Mad Like Artaud
Those who are mad like Antonin Artaud, are they just as mad as he was? Madness, like the plague, is contagious, and everyone, from his psychiatrists to his disciples, family, and critics, everyone who gets close to Artaud, seems to participate in his delirium. Sylvère Lotringer explores various embodiments of this shared delirium through what Artaud called \"mental dramas\"-a series of confrontations with his witnesses or \"persecutors\" where we uncover the raw delirium at work, even in Lotringer himself.Mad Like Artauddoes not intend to add one more layer of commentary to the bitter controversies that have been surrounding the cursed poet's work since his death in 1948, nor does it take sides among the different camps who are still haggling over his corpse. This book speaks of the site where \"madness\" itself is simmering.

The development and validation of an adult students' career needs questionnaire
The number of adult students who are returning to universities and colleges continues to increase. Many of these adult students are attending colleges and universities for career-related reasons (e.g., to change careers, to enhance skills to receive a promotion). Researchers have found that adult students have different career-related needs than do traditional age students (Gianakos, 1996; Luzzo, 1999, 1993; Slotnick et al., 1993). An instrument that reliably measures career development needs of adult students would be helpful to career counselors as they strive to assist adult students with career development. Some instruments have been developed to measure adult students' career development needs; however, no instruments exist that have been found to be psychometrically valid and reliable. This research project was conducted with the goal of developing a psychometrically reliable career development needs assessment. Sixty-one items were identified from a review of the literature and existing career needs assessment instruments. These 61 items formed the Adult Students' Career Needs Questionnaire and an exploratory principal component factor analysis was performed to determine how many factors the scale measures and which items load on each factor. Six interpretable factors emerged from the factor analysis. The six factors were (a) Obtaining Information about Career Fields and Employment Possibilities, (b) Career Self-Efficacy, (c) Resources and Strategies for Academic/Career Decision-Making, (d) Knowledge of Self and How that Knowledge Influences Career Choice, (e) Balancing Multiple Life Roles, and (f) Job Hunting Techniques. The items that loaded on each factor were found to be internally consistent, offering evidence of scale reliability. Test-retest reliability coefficients offer further evidence of scale reliability.
Stimulus-Secretion Coupling in Neurohypophysial Nerve Endings: A Role for Intravesicular Sodium?
It is generally accepted that Ca is essentially involved in regulated secretion, but the role of this cation, as well as others such as Na, is not well understood. An illustrative example occurs in neurohypophysial secretion, where an experimentally induced increase in the cytosolic concentration of Na+can induce continuous neuropeptide release. In contrast, an increase in cytosolic Ca2+will have only a transient stimulatory effect. The secretion-promoting targets for Ca2+are not known; they may be cytosolic, as is usually assumed, but they may also be intravesicular, especially in view of evidence that Ca-rich secretory vesicles are preferentially secreted. In the present work, we have investigated the movements of these cations into and out of secretory vesicles during stimulus-secretion coupling. Isolated rat neurohypophysial nerve endings were stimulated by potassium (55 mM) depolarization, and at 6 min (peak secretion) and 20 min after the onset of stimulation, the elemental content of individual secretory vesicles was measured by quantitative x-ray microanalysis. A depolarization-induced transient increase in intravesicular Na+concentration was found to coincide with the onset of secretion. Moreover, only a predicted small fraction of peripheral vesicles--presumably the docked ones--were Na+-loaded. The low sulfur concentration of Na+-rich vesicles most likely resulted from vesicle swelling. The results suggest that high intravesicular Na+concentrations in docked vesicles, occurring by Na+/Ca2+exchange or by transient fusion pore opening, is a proximal event in exocytosis.
