China Watcher An American novelist senses the dreams stirring in the surge toward democracy
As I listened to more of this futile exchange, I realized how much we Americans take our freedoms for granted. We already assume we have the rights: freedom of expression, contracts and legal departments to protect them, the right to put differences of opinion to a vote. We put those rights in writing, carry them in our back pockets all over the world, pull them out as proof. We may be aliens in another country, but we still maintain that our rights are inalienable. Now I try to imagine what democracy means to people in China who dream of it. I don't think they are envisioning electoral colleges, First Amendment rights or civil lawsuits. I imagine that their dreams of democracy begin with a feeling in the chest, one that has been restrained for so long it grows larger and more insistent, until it bursts forward with a shout. Democracy is the right to shout, \"Listen to us.\" I think about the word they are saying. Democracy. It rolls so easily off my English-speaking tongue. But in Beijing, it is a foreign-sounding word, so many syllables, so many clashing sounds. In China, democracy is still not an easy word to say. Many cannot say it.
The Joy Luck Club
In 1949, four Chinese women--drawn together by the shadow of their past--begin meeting in San Francisco to play mah jong, invest in stocks and \"say\" stories. They call their gathering the Joy Luck Club--and forge a relationship that binds them for more than three decades.
A secret one must discover for oneself
OLIVIA Bishop Laguni Yee contemplates which surname to assume after deciding to end her marriage. In the fluidity of Amy Tan's fiction, this simple decision takes Olivia from the safety of her San Francisco home to the rugged inner depths of mainland China. Tan not only questions Olivia's identity but breaks the boundaries of reality to achieve the answer. Wedged somewhere in the subconscious is the hundred secret senses that we have forgotten we have. Regaining the secret senses is the solution to Olivia's identity crisis. The Hundred Secret Senses is about Olivia's search for meaning, cosmic alliance and inner peace. Her tranquillity is broken by Kwan, her half- sister from China. Kwan is awkward, unsophisticated and regarded as a bull in a china house; above all, she is absolutely Chinese. Kwan's arrival highlights for Olivia her \"condition\" as Chinese-American. However, it is Kwan's claim to be able to communicate with the dead that leaves an enduring mark in Olivia's life.
The backyard bird chronicles
\"In 2016, author Amy Tan grew overwhelmed by the state of the world: Hatred and misinformation became a daily presence on social media, and the country felt more divisive than ever. In search of peace, Tan turned toward the natural world just beyond her window and, specifically, the birds flocking to the feeders in her yard. But what began as an attempt to find solace turned into something far greater--an opportunity to savor quiet moments during a volatile time, connect to nature in a meaningful way, and imagine the intricate lives of the birds she admired. Tracking the natural beauty that surrounds us, The Backyard Bird Chronicles maps the passage of time--from before the pandemic to the days of quarantine--through daily entries, thoughtful questions, and beautiful original sketches. With boundless charm and wit, Amy Tan charts her foray into birding and the natural wonders of the world\"-- Provided by publisher.
