Does perceived morality of CEO activism matter? Understanding employees' responses to CEO actions on sociopolitical issues

PurposeFrom an internal perspective, the purpose of this study is to understand employees' responses to chief executive officer (CEO) activism, a phenomenon wherein a company's CEO expresses his/her own opinions and ideas on controversial sociopolitical issues. Integrating corporate social responsibility (CSR), public relations and leadership literature, this study examines the effects of employees' expectations toward CEOs and transformational CEO leadership on the perceived morality of CEO activism and its attitudinal and behavioral outcomes.Design/methodology/approachAn online survey was conducted with 417 full-time employees in the US whose CEO has been engaging in sociopolitical issues.FindingsThe results showed that employees' ethical expectations toward their CEOs and transformational CEO leadership were positively associated with perceived morality of CEO activism, whereas economic expectations toward CEOs had no significant relationship with it. In turn, perceived morality of CEO activism contributed to employees' positive attitudes and supportive behaviors for their CEOs and their companies.Originality/valueThis study is among the first attempts to examine the effectiveness of CEO activism from an internal perspective, drawing from CSR, public relations and leadership literature.

Theoretical Insights of CSR Research in Communication from 1980 to 2018: A Bibliometric Network Analysis

Communication, as a discipline that generates a rich body of literature on CSR, has become a critical contributor to CSR knowledge in social science. However, limited research exists to understand how CSR knowledge is constructed and diffused in the discipline. This study thus intends to unpack the knowledge construction process of CSR research in the communication discipline from a network perspective. Invisible college was adopted as the conceptual framework. Article and theory/concept networks were constructed with 290 peer-reviewed articles from 61 communication journals between 1980 and 2018. Results showed that in the past four decades, CSR literature in communication has been growing and maturing, as evidenced by the increasing volume and diversity of theories and concepts applied. Furthermore, this body of literature tends to gravitate toward certain selected groups of theories and concepts, resulting in denser article networks over time. Our findings reflected a substantial influence of management (e.g., stakeholder theory, legitimacy theory) and psychological perspectives (e.g., attribution theory) on CSR research in communication. Additionally, the results showed that public relations concepts and theories (e.g., relationship management theory) have influenced CSR research across different communication subfields such as advertising and organization communication. The study expects the continuation of the plurality of voices as to how communication researchers will approach CSR and what specific topics may gain popularity in future research.

Enhancing employees’ knowledge sharing through diversity-oriented leadership and strategic internal communication during the COVID-19 outbreak

Purpose
This study aims to examine the effects of diversity-oriented leadership and strategic internal communication on employees’ knowledge-sharing behavior during a crisis situation, coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in particular. Integrating knowledge sharing research with internal crisis communication literature as well as self-determination theory, the mediating roles of employees’ intrinsic needs satisfaction are also identified.
Design/methodology/approach
An online survey was conducted with 490 full-time employees in the USA across industry sectors during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Findings
Results suggest that diversity-oriented leadership contributes to transparent internal communication during a crisis and increases employees’ satisfaction of autonomy, competence and relatedness needs. Transparent internal communication also increases employees’ intrinsic needs satisfaction, which in turn fosters their job engagement and knowledge-sharing behavior during the crisis.
Originality/value
This study is one of the earliest studies to demonstrate the effectiveness of diversity-oriented leadership and strategic internal crisis communication in enhancing employees’ knowledge-sharing behavior, especially in the context of COVID-19.

Gen inhibiting the Wnt/Ca2+ signaling pathway alleviates cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury

Cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury (CIRI) is a major complication of acute ischemic stroke (AIS), characterized by calcium overload, oxidative stress, and cell apoptosis. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic potential of Genistein (Gen) in alleviating CIRI by focusing on its effects on the Wnt/Ca
2+
signaling pathway. Using a rat model of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion and in vitro experiments on PC12 cells, we observed that Gen treatment reduced infarct size, improved neurological function, and mitigated calcium overload, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. Further analysis revealed that Gen regulates key proteins in the Wnt/Ca
2+
signaling pathway, including Wnt5a and Frizzled-2, effectively preventing intracellular calcium accumulation and subsequent damage. The knockdown of Frizzled-2 confirmed the pathway’s role in mediating calcium overload and subsequent damage. Our findings suggest that Gen alleviates CIRI by inhibiting the Wnt/Ca
2+
signaling pathway, positioning it as a promising candidate for therapeutic intervention in stroke treatment.

Media-induced emotions and message sidedness in corporate crises

PurposeThis study examines the interplay between media-induced emotional crisis framing (anger vs sadness) and message sidedness of crisis response on publics’ attribution of crisis responsibility as well as subsequent company evaluation and supportive behavioral intention.Design/methodology/approachA 2 (emotion: anger vs sadness) x 2 (crisis response: one-sided vs two-sided) online experiment was conducted among 161 participants in the USA.FindingsResults showed that anger-inducing media framing of the crisis elicited higher levels of crisis responsibility attribution and more negative company evaluation, compared with sadness-inducing media framing. One-sided message response was more effective than two-sided message response in lowering attribution of crisis responsibility when sadness was induced, but no difference was found under the anger-induced condition. Attribution of crisis responsibility fully mediated the effects of emotional crisis framing on company evaluation and supportive behavioral intention toward the company.Originality/valueThis study is among the first to examine the interaction effect between emotional media framing and response message sidedness in an ambiguous crisis. Drawing on the interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks, this study integrates the situational crisis communication theory, appraisal-tendency framework and message sidedness in persuasion literature. As such, it contributes to theoretical development in crisis communication and offers communication managers guidance on how to effectively address emotionally framed crises.

Fortune 1000 communication strategies on Facebook and Twitter

Purpose
– The purpose of this paper is to explore the communication strategies corporations adopt for Facebook and/or Twitter, and the consistency of communication strategies used on both Facebook and Twitter.
Design/methodology/approach
– A content analysis of 2011 Fortune 1000 corporate Facebook and Twitter sites was undertaken. Specially, communication strategies on 63 Fortune 1000 Facebook sites and 65 Fortune 1000 Twitter sites in January 2012 were examined.
Findings
– This study found that a majority of the examined Fortune 1000 companies emphasized a corporate ability communication strategy over a corporate social responsibility communication strategy on their Facebook and Twitter sites. Additionally, none of these companies used a true hybrid strategy on their social media sites (SMSs). Results also demonstrated that these companies were following the one message principle of integrated communication.
Research limitations/implications
– This study is limited to its samples size and the coding time frame.
Practical implications
– Results of this study can help public relations and corporate communication professionals leverage multiple SMSs to build strong associations, improve engagement, and strengthen relationships with target stakeholders.
Originality/value
– Through examining corporate communication strategies on SMSs, this study contributes to current social media research along with corporate communication/public relations scholarship. It replicated and extended prior work by examining how existing corporate communication strategies on traditional web sites were incorporated into two new mainstream media – Facebook and Twitter.

PurposeThis study aims to systematically evaluate the psychological factors of independent versus interdependent self-construal, self-evaluation motives of enhancement versus verification, and the mediating role of bridging and bonding social capital on consumers' positive and negative brand-related electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) sharing with in-group and out-group audiences.Design/methodology/approachThe online survey was conducted with young adult consumers in the Netherlands (N = 322). Multiple regression analysis with PROCESS was used to test the hypotheses.FindingsConsumers with independent self-construal are more likely to share negative eWOM, particularly via social messengers with in-group members. These consumers, however, tend to share positive eWOM on companies' social media accounts that reach out-group audiences including online strangers. Additionally, self-evaluation was the key motivation driving positive eWOM sharing with in-groups, while bridging social capital mediated the effects of self-construal on sharing negative eWOM.Originality/valueThe paper provides a more holistic understanding of the factors impacting the valence and intended audience for eWOM sharing. The findings advance eWOM research by differentiating positive and negative eWOM sharing in the context of intergroup communication.

Tetramethylpyrazine ameliorates LPS-induced acute lung injury via the miR-369-3p/DSTN axis
Acute lung injury (ALI) is a severe clinical respiratory condition characterized by high rates of mortality and morbidity, for which effective treatments are currently lacking. In this study, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was used to induce ALI mice, demonstrating the efficacy of tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) in ameliorating ALI. Subsequent we perfored high-throughput sequencing analysis and used Targetscan 8.0 and miRWalk 3.0 databases to predict the interaction between microRNAs and destrin (DSTN), ultimately identifying miR-369-3p as the focus of the investigation. The adenovirus carrying miR-369-3p was administered one week prior to LPS-induced in order to assess its potential efficacy in ameliorating ALI in mice. The findings indicated that the overexpression of miR-369-3p resulted in enhanced lung function, reduced pulmonary edema, inflammation, and permeability in LPS-induced ALI mice, while the suppression of miR-369-3p exacerbated the damage in these mice. Furthermore, the beneficial effects of TMP on LPS-induced ALI were negated by the downregulation of miR-369-3p. The results of our study demonstrate that TMP mitigates LPS-induced ALI through upregulation of miR-369-3p. Consequently, the findings of this study advocate for the clinical utilization of TMP in ALI treatment, with miR-369-3p emerging as a promising target for future ALI interventions.

Tetramethylpyrazine ameliorates acute lung injury by regulating the Rac1/LIMK1 signaling pathway

Acute lung injury (ALI) is a respiratory disorder characterized by severe inflammation of the alveoli and lung parenchyma. Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP), the main active compound in Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort (LC), can protect against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALI. Our study aimed to investigate how TMP protects the endothelial cell barrier in pulmonary capillaries. We administered TMP intraperitoneally at different doses and found that acute lung injury in mice was improved, but not in a dose-dependent manner. TMP toxicity was tested in vitro . We observed that LPS-induced cytoskeletal remodeling was inhibited by TMP. Murine ALI was induced as follows: For the 1st hit, LPS (2 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally; after 16 h, for the 2nd hit, LPS (4 mg/kg) was instilled intratracheally. The mice in treatment groups had TMP or dexamethasone administered intraperitoneally 30 min prior to the 1st hit and 30 min past the 2nd hit. Mice were euthanized 24 h after the last injecting. We measured protein and mRNA levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcriptase real-time PCR (RT-qPCR), respectively. The ultrastructural analysis was performed with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and the cytoskeleton was observed by immunofluorescence. Immunohistochemistry and Western blotting were used to detect protein expression in the Rac1/LIMK1/ZO-1/occludin signal pathway. The results showed that TMP treatment decreased inflammatory cell infiltration and alleviated LPS-induced damage in lung tissue. Also, TMP significantly inhibited the Rac1/LIMK1/ZO-1/occludin signaling pathway. Our findings show that using TMP during sepsis can protect the pulmonary microvascular endothelial cell barrier and suppress inflammation. Therefore, TMP may have a promising therapeutic role in preventing acute lung injury from sepsis.

Background: The respiratory system is intensely damaged by acute lung injury (ALI). The anti-inflammatory effects of tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) against ALI have been confirmed, but it exhibits a short half-life. miR-194-5p could directly target Rac1, but the internalization rate of miRNA cells was low. Purpose: To explore the potential of the soft mesoporous organic silica nanoplatform (NPs) as carriers for delivery of TMP and miR194-5p through the tail vein. Methods: NPs@TMP and NPs@PEI@miR-194-5p were added to the HUVEC cell-lines, in vitro, to observe the cell uptake and cytotoxic effects. In vivo experiments were conducted by injecting fluorescently labeled NPs through the tail vein and tracking distribution. Therapeutic and toxic side-effects were analyzed systemically. Results: In vitro study exhibited that NPs have no toxic effect on HUVECs within the experimental parameters and have excellent cellular uptake. The IVIS Spectrum Imaging System shows that NPs accumulate mainly in the lungs. NPs@TMP treatment can improved oxidative stress and inflammation levels in ALI mice and inhibited the TLR4/NLRP3/caspase 1 pathway. NPs@PEI@miR194-5p can inhibit the Rac1/ZO-1/occludin pathway and improved endothelial cell permeability in ALI mice. The co-treatment of NPs@TMP and NPs@PEI@miR-194-5p can significantly improved the survival rates of the mice, reduced pulmonary capillary permeability and improved pathological injury in ALI mice. Innovation: This study combined traditional Chinese medicine, bioinformatics, cellular molecular biology and nanobiomedicine to study the pathogenesis and treatment of ALI. The rate of cellular internalization was improved by changing the shape and hardness of nanoparticles. NPs@TMP and NPs@PEI@miR-194-5p combined application can significantly improve the survival condition and pathological injury of mice. Conclusion: NPs loaded with TMP and miR-194-5p showed a greater therapeutic effect in ALI mice.
