Habitat prioritization for bat conservation: A case study in Vietnam

Bats play a vital role in ecosystems through providing essential functions and services, such as pollination and pest control, but they face many threats from anthropogenic activities, climate change, and diseases. While establishing protected areas can be a conservation measure to mitigate bats’ population declines and habitats loss, the effectiveness of current protected areas in conserving bat species remains poorly understood. Using Vietnam as a case, this study aims to evaluate the representation of the existing protected area network for bats in terms of the proportion of their distribution ranges covered and the number of well-covered species. We also identified areas that would improve the representation using the spatial prioritization approach. Our results showed that while Vietnam’s protected area network provides better representation than random allocation, it currently only covers 6.12% of bat distribution ranges on average, leaving the distribution areas of more than 78 (96%) of the 81 species examined in this study insufficiently represented. Through the spatial prioritization, the forests in Central Highlands, western Central Coast, and Northwest were identified as the key regions for bats. Expanding the current network to cover 9% and 30% of the land under the national and global targets could improve the range coverage to 11.89% and 41.99%, respectively, reducing the number of poorly represented bats to 10–23 (12.3–28.4%) species. These findings offer critical insights for conservation practitioners and policymakers into prioritizing resources and efforts for improving conservation of not only bats in Vietnam but also biodiversity in general in other places.

Bat Diversity in Cat Ba Biosphere Reserve, Northeastern Vietnam: A Review with New Records from Mangrove Ecosystem

The Cat Ba Biosphere Reserve is internationally renowned for its spectacular karst landscape. It covers a large area with hundreds of limestone islands and various ecosystems including caves, tropical forests, and mangroves. However, previous surveys were only conducted in terrestrial ecosystems on Cat Ba Island. Therefore, bats inhabiting mangroves and the remaining islands did not receive attention from scientists up to 2014. To initially fill in the gaps, we conducted ten bat surveys between 2015 and 2020 with an emphasis on mangroves and previously unsurveyed islands. Bats were captured using mist nets and harp traps. Twenty-three species belonging to 13 genera of six families were recorded during the surveys. Of these, four species (Macroglossus minimus, Myotis hasselti, Phoniscus jagorii, Tylonycteris fulvida) are new to the reserve. Remarkably, 15 species belonging to seven genera of five families were captured in mangrove, which is the highest species diversity for bats reported from any mangrove area in mainland Southeast Asia. Based on results from the surveys and literature review, we here provide the most updated bat diversity of the reserve with confirmed records of 32 bat species belonging to 16 genera of six families. Historical records of each species in the literature were reviewed. Two species, Scotophilus heathi and Scotophilus kuhlii, are unconfirmed because of unclear evidence in previous publications. Results of this study indicated that the mangrove ecosystem is important for bats but still poorly studied in Cat Ba Biosphere Reserve and Vietnam as a whole. In addition, morphological measurements, echolocation data, distributional records, and conservation status of each species are also given in this paper for potential research and conservation campaigns in the future.

Đakrông virus, a novel mobatvirus (Hantaviridae) harbored by the Stoliczka’s Asian trident bat (Aselliscus stoliczkanus) in Vietnam

The recent discovery of genetically distinct shrew- and mole-borne viruses belonging to the newly defined family
Hantaviridae
(order Bunyavirales) has spurred an extended search for hantaviruses in RNAlater®-preserved lung tissues from 215 bats (order Chiroptera) representing five families (Hipposideridae, Megadermatidae, Pteropodidae, Rhinolophidae and Vespertilionidae), collected in Vietnam during 2012 to 2014. A newly identified hantavirus, designated Đakrông virus (DKGV), was detected in one of two Stoliczka’s Asian trident bats (
Aselliscus stoliczkanus
), from Đakrông Nature Reserve in Quảng Trị Province. Using maximum-likelihood and Bayesian methods, phylogenetic trees based on the full-length S, M and L segments showed that DKGV occupied a basal position with other mobatviruses, suggesting that primordial hantaviruses may have been hosted by ancestral bats.

Potential individual and interactive effects of climate and land-cover changes on bats and implications for conservation planning: a case study in Vietnam

Climate and land-cover changes are among major threats to biodiversity. However, the interactive effects of the two threats are often overlooked in conservation planning. Using 81 bat species occurring in Vietnam as a case, we investigated the individual and interactive effects of climate and land-cover changes, highlighting the importance of this information for conservation efforts. By using species distribution models, we predicted the potential changes in range size among species and in species richness across Vietnam by the 2050s, considering projected climate and land-cover changes under two emission scenarios. Our results revealed that both threats individually would have predominantly negative effects on bats in Vietnam. Moreover, when these threats occur simultaneously, their interactions would generally intensify the impacts by mitigating individual positive effects and/or enhancing negative effects. However, we also found large interspecific and geographic variations in the direction and magnitude of these effects. Forest specialists, insectivores and cave-roosting species were predicted to be particularly vulnerable to the negative effects, with northern and southern Vietnam being more affected. These results underscore the urgent need to incorporate both climate and land-cover changes, as well as their interactions, into conservation planning for bats in Vietnam and biodiversity in general. The species-specific and spatially-explicit information regarding the impacts of the two threats can guide conservation actions, allowing us to target more manageable and less uncertain threats, as well as prioritize the protection of more vulnerable species.

First Epidemiological Survey on the Prevalence and Subtypes Distribution of the Enteric Parasite Blastocystis sp. in Vietnam

Although Blastocystis sp. is the most common enteric protozoan in human stools worldwide, various geographical areas remain to be investigated regarding the frequency and circulation of this parasite. Such is the case of some developing countries in Southeast Asia that exhibit a higher risk for parasitic infections due to unsanitary conditions. While several epidemiological surveys have been conducted, for instance, in Thailand, little or no data are available from neighboring countries, such as Vietnam. Therefore, in order to determine the prevalence and subtype (ST) distribution of Blastocystis sp. and to clarify the transmission of the parasite, the first molecular epidemiological survey ever conducted in this country was performed. For this purpose, a total of 310 stool specimens were collected from patients enrolled at the Family Hospital of Da Nang and then tested for the presence of Blastocystis sp. by real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR), followed by subtyping of the isolates. The overall prevalence of the parasite reached 34.5% in this Vietnamese cohort. No significant association was found between parasite infection and gender, age, symptomatic status, contact with animals or source of drinking water. Out of the 107 positive patients, nearly half presented mixed infections. Therefore, some of the corresponding samples were reanalyzed by end-point PCR, followed by PCR products cloning and sequencing. Of the 88 total subtyped isolates, ST3 was predominant, followed by ST10, ST14, ST7, ST1, ST4, ST6 and ST8. Our study was, thus, the first to report ST8, ST10 and ST14 in the Southeast Asian population. The predominance of ST3 within this Vietnamese cohort, coupled with its low intra-ST genetic variability, reflected a large inter-human transmission, while ST1 transmission was suggested to be not only anthroponotic, but also likely correlated to animal or environmental sources. Strikingly, isolates considered of animal origin (ST6-ST8, ST10 and ST14) accounted for more than 50% of the subtyped isolates. These findings improved our knowledge of the epidemiology and circulation of Blastocystis sp. in Southeast Asia, and in particular, in Vietnam, and highlighted both a major burden of the parasite in this country and a high risk of zoonotic transmission, mainly from poultry and livestock.

Multivariate analysis of craniodental morphology in mouse-eared bats (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae, Myotis) from Vietnam

This study conducted biostatistical multivariate analyses on 23 craniodental morphological measurements from 209 specimens to study interspecific variations amongst 15 bat species of the genus Myotis in Vietnam. Univariate and multivariate analyses demonstrated that the studied species can be divided into four groups as follows: extra-large-sized species ( M. chinensis ), large-sized species ( M. pilosus , M. indochinensis and M. annectans ), medium-sized species ( M. altarium , M. hasseltii , M. montivagus , M. horsfieldii , M. ater , M. laniger and M. muricola ) and small-sized species ( M. annamiticus , M. aff. siligorensis, M. rosseti and M. alticraniatus ). Our data revealed that the main craniodental features contributing to the variations in distinguishing Myotis species are the width of the anterior palatal, least height of the coronoid process, length of the upper and lower canine-premolar, zygomatic width and width across the upper canines and lower premolar-molar length. Based on patterns of morphological differences, we conducted comparisons between morphometrically closely resembling species pairs and further discussed additional characteristics that are expected to support the taxonomy and systematics of Vietnamese Myotis bats.

Spatial and Temporal Isotopic and Hydrochemical Characteristics of Groundwater and Surface Water in the Tuul River Basin, Mongolia

Hydrochemistry and stable isotope tracing approaches were applied to groundwater and surface waters (rivers, springs, stormwater drainage canals, and treated wastewater discharges) to study the spatiotemporal geochemical and stable isotope characteristics and their interactions. The analysis revealed spatiotemporal variations and interactions between groundwater and surface water. Ca-HCO
3
-type water dominated the study area; representing 70.7%, (summer) and 81% (winter) of the samples. The chemical and isotopic values presented some spatial differences but minimal temporal changes, except in Tuul River water downstream of Ulaanbaatar. The Tuul River was mostly characterized as Ca-HCO
3
-type water, but varied temporally and spatially, shifting to Ca-Na-HCO
3
-type water in summer and Na-Ca-HCO
3
-type in winter in the downstream region after wastewater discharge. Also, electrical conductivity (EC) values of Tuul River are increasing gradually with distance, and more than double in concentration after mixing with treated wastewater discharges and stormwater drainage canals, providing clear evidence of anthropogenic impacts. The similarity in the stable isotopes and chemical characteristics of floodplain groundwater and river water suggest that local recharge of the alluvial groundwater with Tuul River water, whereas distant groundwater quality exhibited higher levels of minerals and stable isotopes. Cluster analysis clearly indicated a connection between floodplain groundwater and river water, and also the effect of anthropogenic discharges associated with stormwater and treated wastewater discharges. The analysis results also show that cluster analysis is a useful approach for optimizing future spatial sampling strategies, and offers a reliable classification of sampling stations in the region, especially along Tuul River.

We examined the floristic composition and stand structure of tropical mountain forests containing two pine species, Pinus krempfii Lecomte and Pinus dalatensis Ferré, on the Da Lat Plateau in southern Vietnam. A total of 92 tree species were identified, and the greatest species richness at the family level was found in Lauraceae and Fagaceae. Both pine species grew to more than 25 m in height and spread their crowns over the continuous canopy layer. Under crowns of P. krempfii, Castanopsis chinensis, Trigonobalanus verticillata, Engelhardia roxburghiana, and Dendropanax hainanensis constituted the continuous canopy layer. Under crowns of P. dalatensis, pioneer species such as Schima wallichii, Exbucklandia populnea, and Pentaphylax euryoides along with gymnosperms such as Dacrycarpus imbricatus and Dacrydium elatum constituted the continuous canopy layer. Juveniles of P. krempfii were prevalent on the forest floor, but juveniles of P. dalatensis were scarce. We suggest that two pine species have different regeneration requirements related to disturbance and soil condition.
