The white horse trick
In the late twenty-first century, dramatic climate change has made life in Ireland almost impossible, and soon Tir na n'Og is faced with a refugee problem, partly because of a warlord who is a member of the Liddy family.
Detrimental effects of flame retardant, PBB153, exposure on sperm and future generations
In 1973, the Velsicol Chemical Company, which manufactured FireMaster, a brominated flame retardant, and NutriMaster, a nutritional supplement, mistakenly shipped hundreds of pounds of FireMaster to grain mills around Michigan where it was incorporated into animal feed and then into the food chain across the state. An estimated 6.5 million Michigan residents consumed polybrominated biphenyl (PBB)-laced animal products leading to one of the largest agricultural accidents in U.S. history. To date, there have been no studies investigating the effects of PBB on epigenetic regulation in sperm, which could explain some of the endocrine-related health effects observed among children of PBB-exposed parents. Fusing epidemiological approaches with a novel in vitro model of human spermatogenesis, we demonstrate that exposure to PBB153, the primary component of FireMaster, alters the epigenome in human spermatogenic cells. Using our novel stem cell-based spermatogenesis model, we show that PBB153 exposure decreases DNA methylation at regulatory elements controlling imprinted genes. Furthermore, PBB153 affects DNA methylation by reducing de novo DNA methyltransferase activity at increasing PBB153 concentrations as well as reducing maintenance DNA methyltransferase activity at the lowest tested PBB153 concentration. Additionally, PBB153 exposure alters the expression of genes critical to proper human development. Taken together, these results suggest that PBB153 exposure alters the epigenome by disrupting methyltransferase activity leading to defects in imprint establishment causing altered gene expression, which could contribute to health concerns in the children of men exposed to PBB153. While this chemical is toxic to those directly exposed, the results from this study indicate that the epigenetic repercussions may be detrimental to future generations. Above all, this model may be expanded to model a multitude of environmental exposures to elucidate the effect of various chemicals on germline epigenetics and how paternal exposure may impact the health of future generations.

\"Kate Bishop, the former Young Avenger (who you'll remember from saving that other Hawkguy all the time and basically keeping his life in some semblance of order) is heading back out west to Los Angeles, with her bow and arrows in tow. There are crimes to solve, and she's the best archer for the job--even if she kind of doesn't have her P.I. license and so maybe is doing it illegally. Her first case seems easy--a little too easy. Could it be she's uncovered a major conspiracy right off the bat? And when an unbearable hate wave spreads across L.A., it's up to the Guardian Angel of the City of Angels to calm down the entire town. The odds may be stacked against her, but this is where she thrives--nobody puts Katie in a corner!\" -- back cover.
Emerging technologies and research ethics: Developing editorial policy using a scoping review and reference panel
Emerging technologies and societal changes create new ethical concerns and greater need for cross-disciplinary and cross-stakeholder communication on navigating ethics in research. Scholarly articles are the primary mode of communication for researchers, however there are concerns regarding the expression of research ethics in these outputs. If not in these outputs, where should researchers and stakeholders learn about the ethical considerations of research? Drawing on a scoping review, analysis of policy in a specific disciplinary context (learning and technology), and reference group discussion, we address concerns regarding research ethics, in research involving emerging technologies through developing novel policy that aims to foster learning through the expression of ethical concepts in research. This paper develops new editorial policy for expression of research ethics in scholarly outputs across disciplines. These guidelines, aimed at authors, reviewers, and editors, are underpinned by: a cross-disciplinary scoping review of existing policy and adherence to these policies;a review of emerging policies, and policies in a specific discipline (learning and technology); and,a collective drafting process undertaken by a reference group of journal editors (the authors of this paper). Analysis arising from the scoping review indicates gaps in policy across a wide range of journals (54% have no statement regarding reporting of research ethics), and adherence (51% of papers reviewed did not refer to ethics considerations). Analysis of emerging and discipline-specific policies highlights gaps. Our collective policy development process develops novel materials suitable for cross-disciplinary transfer, to address specific issues of research involving AI, and broader challenges of emerging technologies.

Validating the relation-monitoring task as a measure of relational integration and predictor of fluid intelligence
The relation-monitoring task (RMT) has demonstrated a remarkable ability to predict higher-order cognitive abilities such as fluid intelligence, despite its apparent simplicity: It requires no storage over time and no advanced mental manipulation. Instead, the task is theorized to measure relational integration: the process of constructing mental relations between independent elements. Although several studies have established a link between the RMT and fluid intelligence, few studies have investigated the task parameters that contribute to the task’s ability to predict higher-order performance. In the present experiment, we manipulated relational complexity and attentional-control demands by varying visual interference and the amount of new information presented on each trial. Even the most basic version of the task (loading primarily on relational integration) explained substantial variance in fluid intelligence, above and beyond the variance already predicted by traditional working memory tasks. We extended prior results by suggesting an incremental effect of attentional-control demands that contributes (but is not imperative) to the RMT’s relationship with fluid intelligence. These findings support the relational integration hypothesis, the theory that what fundamentally limits fluid intelligence is the capacity for relational integration.
Rethinking pain education from the perspectives of people experiencing pain: a meta-ethnography to inform physiotherapy training
BackgroundPain is a complex, global and multidimensional phenomena that impacts the lives of millions of people. Chronic pain (lasting more than 3 months) is particularly burdensome for individuals, health and social care systems. Physiotherapists have a fundamental role in supporting people who are experiencing pain. However, the appropriateness of pain education in pre-registration physiotherapy training programmes has been questioned.Recent research reports identify the need to integrate the voice of patients to inform the development of the pre-registration curriculum. The aim of this meta-ethnography was to develop new conceptual understanding of patients' needs when accessing physiotherapy for pain management. The concepts were viewed through an educational lens to create a patient needs-based model to inform physiotherapy training.MethodsNoblit and Hare’s seven-stage meta-ethnography was used to conduct this qualitative systematic review. Five databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL Complete, ERIC, PsycINFO and AMED) were searched with eligibility criteria: qualitative methodology, reports patient experience of physiotherapy, adult participants with musculoskeletal pain, reported in English. Databases were searched to January 2018. Emerge reporting guidelines guided the preparation of this manuscript.ResultsA total of 366 citations were screened, 43 full texts retrieved and 18 studies included in the final synthesis. Interpretive qualitative synthesis resulted in six distinct categories that represent patients’ needs when in pain. Analysing categories through an education lens resulted in three overall lines of argument to inform physiotherapy training. The categories and lines of argument are represented in a ‘needs-based’ model to inform pre-registration physiotherapy training.DiscussionThe findings provide new and novel interpretations of qualitative data in an area of research that lacks patient input. This is a valuable addition to pain education research. Findings support the work of others relative to patient centredness in physiotherapy.
Investigating the nutritional status, outcomes and needs of adolescents and young adults (AYA) following a cancer diagnosis: protocol for a mixed-methods study
Background Cancer treatment for adolescents and young adults (AYA) can be highly challenging and interferes with optimal nutrition, which is vital for healthy development, physical growth, and well-being. Cancer malnutrition and associated negative outcomes are well-studied in adult and paediatric populations, but the specific nutrition complications and requirements for AYA with cancer are poorly understood. This study aims to explore and describe the nutritional status, needs and outcomes of AYA after a diagnosis of cancer. Methods and analysis The AYCANN-study (adolescent and young adult cancer nutrition project) adopts a mixed-methods study design, conducted over three inter-related studies; (1) Prospective observational study of AYA between 15 and 25 years, following diagnosis of any cancer type, to quantitatively assess changes in body weight, muscle mass/function, nutritional status, and health related quality of life (HRQoL). Study assessments will be undertaken at four time-points (recruitment, and 2- 4- and 6-months post-recruitment) and will include screening for nutrition risk (PNST or MST); assessment of nutritional status (PG-SGA, mid-upper arm circumference); assessment of muscle strength (hand-grip strength); frequency of dietitian referral, nutrition support and symptoms; and assessment of health-related quality of life (AQoL-6D); (2) Qualitative study using focus groups with AYA to assess access to nutrition related care and preference for nutrition services; (3) Qualitative study, utilising focus groups with oncology healthcare professionals (OHP) to explore and assess current access to nutrition-related care for AYA following a cancer diagnosis along with OHP nutrition education needs, service delivery and research priority areas. For study 1, statistical analysis will be primarily descriptive, and effect size estimates (Cohen’s d) will be used to characterise any differences between nutritional status groups at follow-up assessments. Thematic analysis will be undertaken for study 2 and 3 to understand patients and OHP access to and experience of nutrition-related care. Discussion This multi-site longitudinal study will explore and describe the nutritional status, needs and nutrition-related outcomes of AYA after a cancer diagnosis. Results will inform future clinical practice guidelines and interventional nutrition research targeting patients identified at greater risk of nutritional complications.
