Andrey Voznesensky: Between Pasternak and Mayakovsky
Pasternak & Mayakovsky are examined as primary influences on Voznesensky's poetry, moral & poetic values, & style. Their influences were very strong in his first three books, although later works also show such effects. Pasternak can be seen primarily in Voznesensky's style & technical skill, Mayakovsky in his themes & vocabulary. Voznesensky, however, wrote more static poetry than Pasternak, & departs from both predecessors in the sudden focus shift frequently marking the end of his poems. These endings break off from the rest of the poem both structurally & semantically. The major difference between Mayakovsky & Voznesensky lies in the latter's less than passionate approach to topics Mayakovsky approached with deep feeling, particularly that of the poet as revolutionary. Voznesensky is also more superficial than the masters on whom he modeled himself. T. Lamb
