Con este poema autoetnogr?fico, la autora presenta lo que descubri? despu?s de pasar m?s de un a?o practicando la reflexi?n y la introspecci?n sobre sus dos Selves. Se dio cuento de que sus epistemolog?as y ontolog?as eran diferentes seg?n la naturaleza dominante, y tambi?n que ten?a dos maneras distintas de navegar por la vida dependiendo del idioma que hablara. En resumen, la autora utiliza la metodolog?a de autoetnograf?a para examinar c?mo el poder y el privilegio inciden en sus acciones y sus palabras, dependiendo de si piensa en ingl?s o en espa?ol. La Autoetnografía Crítica y el Self Vulnerable como Investigadora
Este ensayo presenta la autoetnografía crítica como una estrategia innovadora para conducir investigaciones en comunidades marginadas y vulnerables. Como se usa en este ensayo, es una combinación de la autoetnografía, la etnografía y la pedagogía crítica por la cual la investigadora se hace participante en el estudio, dirigiéndose al interior para examinar el Self y la complejidad de las perspectivas usando la lente de la pedagogía crítica. La reflexividad y la introspección intensas apoyan este estudiodel Self como participante para ir más allá del recuento de hechos tan objetivamente como sea posible, que es lo que ocurre con la autobiografía, para reconocer que la investigadora interpreta los hechos de su vida a partir de las perspectivas culturales que se han formado por años debido a sucesos y circunstancias socioculturales, socio-históricas, sociopolíticas y socioeconómicas que le han ocurrido. Subsecuentemente como investigadora que es miembro de la cultura dominante enalgunas categorías puedo ver y entender como opresora de la gente que vive en las comunidades donde hago mis investigaciones.

This article presents critical autoethnography as a socially just way of conducting research in marginalized, vulnerable communities. Combining autoethnography, ethnography, and critical pedagogy, the researcher becomes a participant/collaborator in the study, turning inward to examine the Self and the complexities of cultural perspectives through the lens of critical pedagogy. Through intense reflexivity and introspection, the researcher can examine Self as participant, not trying to present facts as objectively as possible, as occurs with autobiography, but rather acknowledging that the interpretation of facts reflects cultural perspectives shaped by years of sociocultural, sociohistorical, sociopolitical, and socioeconomic events and circumstances. Subsequently, the researcher, more than likely a member of the dominant culture in some categories, is able to understand herself as an oppressor.

The Inquisition/Torture of the Tenure Track

This autoethnographic narrative addresses the mental anguish and chaos that were the author's constant companions during the year of waiting for the results of her tenure decision at a Research I university. Having chosen a non-traditional path to tenure, she found that autoethnography and critical pedagogy could be acceptable forms of scholarship despite their creating numerous questions and consternations on the part of all involved in the process. She uses autoethnography to make sense of the process of moving through self-questioning and doubt into a place of renewed and revitalized strength and belief in her Self and her writing. She concludes with further questions about the tenure and promotion process and the devastating effect it can produce on faculty who covet the assurance of a permanent position in a university.

In this autoethnography, I share a snapshot from a research trip I took with my husband Dan to Mexico in 2006 seeking stories from the “other side.” I wanted to talk to the families of the Mexican women I had worked with in my own US city for the past seven years to find out the effect the women's emigration had on the transnational families who remained on the other side of the border. I heard many stories from the Mexican families, and I also experienced my own story when Dan and I were threatened with arrest at the border by Mexican immigration officials who canceled our passports and called us “illegals”. I refer to my journal entries to create data poems, connecting the “autobiographical and personal to the cultural and social” (Ellis, 2004, p. xix). Thus I am able to perform a poem that features “concrete action, self-consciousness, and introspection” (p. xix) to make a statement in “tension with dominant expressions of discursive power” (Neumann, 1996, p. 189). I choose to use images to “[set] a scene, [tell] a story, [weave] intricate connections between life and art” (Jones, 2005, p. 765).
