The problem of evil
Michael Tooley examines formulating incompatibility arguments from evil, skeptical theism and evidential arguments from evil.
Is Ethics Without God Possible? An Answer, Plus Some Thoughts, About the Question
2025
Is Ethics Without God Possible? In this article, I argue for the conclusion that ethics without God is possible. First, I begin by offering a brief overview of metaethics, outlining the main options concerning the nature of ethical statements. Next, I set out my argument. As it turns out, that argument does involve some philosophy of religion, but of a limited scope, since the only issue relevant to my argument is whether some version of the ontological argument for the existence of God is sound or not. Finally, having argued that ethics without God is possible—leaving aside the minor qualification mentioned above—I shall indicate why I think it is crucial to consider how philosophy of religion might bear upon the question initially posed, and thus why it is a mistake to address the question posed without considering how philosophy of religion might bear upon the question initially posed.

Electrical & Electronic Engineering
2021,2020
Focusing primarily on core topics in mechanical and electrical science, students enrolled on a wide range of higher education engineering courses at undergraduate level will find Engineering Science, second edition, an invaluable aid to their learning.
With updated and expanded content, this new edition covers sections on the mechanics of materials, dynamics, thermodynamics, electrostatics and electromagnetic principles, and a.c./d.c. circuit theory. Entirely new sections are devoted to the study of gyroscopes and the effect of applied torques on their behaviour, and the use of Laplace transformation as a tool for modelling complex networks of inductance, capacitance and resistance. In addition, a new overview of the decibel (dB) introduces a handy technique for expressing logarithmic ratios.
Knowledge-check and review questions, along with activities, are included throughout the book, and the necessary background mathematics is integrated alongside the appropriate areas of engineering. The result is a clear and easily accessible textbook that encourages independent study and covers the essential scientific principles that students will meet at this level.
The book is supported with a companion website for students and lecturers at www.key2engineeringscience.com, and it includes:
Solutions to the Test Your Knowledge and Review Questions in the book
Further guidance on Essential Mathematics with introductions to vectors, vector operations, the calculus and differential equations, etc.
An extra chapter on steam properties, cycles and plant
Downloadable SCILAB scripts that help simplify some of the advanced mathematical content
Selected illustrations from the book

The Mathematics of Desert: Merit, Fit, and Well-Being
2022
Here, we argue for a mathematical equation that captures desert. Our procedure consists of setting out principles that a correct equation must satisfy and then arguing that our set of equations satisfies them. We then consider two objections to the equation. First, an objector might argue that desert and well-being separately contribute to intrinsic goodness, and they do not separately contribute. The concern here is that our equations treat them as separate contributors. Second, our set of desert-equations are unlike equations in science because our equations involve multiple desert-equations with the applicable equation depending on how the variables are filled out. Neither objection succeeds.

Calum Miller's attempted refutation of Michael Tooley's evidential argument from evil
2023
In his article, ‘What's Wrong with Tooley's Argument from Evil?’, Calum Miller's goal was to show that the evidential argument from evil that I have advanced is unsound, and in support of that claim, Miller set out three main objections. First, he argued that I had failed to recognize that the actual occurrence of an event can by itself, at least in principle, constitute good evidence that it was not morally wrong for God to allow events of the kind in question. Miller's second objection was then that, in attempting to show that it is unlikely that God exists, I had failed to consider either positive arguments in support of the existence of God or possible theodicies, and thus that I was unjustified in drawing any conclusions concerning the probability that theism is true in the light of the total evidence available. Miller's third and final objection was that one of the approaches to logical probability that I employed – namely, that based upon a structure-description equiprobability principle, rather than a state-description equiprobability principle – was unsound since it has clearly unacceptable implications. In response, I argue that all three of Miller's objections are unsound. The third objection, however, is nevertheless important since it shows that my type of argument from evil cannot be based merely on the evils found in the world. One must also consider good states of affairs, and their relations to bad ones. I show, however, that that deficiency can be addressed in a completely satisfactory manner.

A meta-database of Holocene sediment cores for England: missing data
2015
Fifteen investigators in the Universities of Exeter, Durham and Bournemouth, the British Museum and Natural England have collaborated to produce the first meta-database of Holocene sediment cores for England increasing the number of core sites from 118 to 763 (Suggitt et al., Veget Hist Archaeobot; doi: 10.1007/S00334-015-0515-1, 2015). The final roster in their Electronic Supplementary Material (ESM-1) can be increased considerably by consulting both published and 'grey' literature from the coastal lowlands of England available from at least the 1870s onwards. No use has been made of the archives and publications of the British Geological Survey or the Soil Survey of England and Wales. Two examples are given from the coastal lowlands of Lancashire in north-west England and the submerged landscapes of Hartlepool Bay and adjacent areas on land in north-east England, the sediments of which have been treated in monographs recently published. Reference is made to other coastal lowlands in eastern and south-west England. The importance of a comprehensive meta-database cannot be underestimated for the starting point of investigations into vegetational history, climate and sealevel changes, environmental changes, and prehistoric land-use and settlement.
