Functional Analytic Psychotherapy Made Simple
How therapists relate to their clients can have a profound impact on treatment outcomes. Functional Analytic Psychotherapy Made Simple is the first professional resource to offer a practical treatment approach focused on interpersonal relationships. Written by the founders of this evidence-based modality, the book integrates the latest research on the importance of the therapist-client relationship with the new science of social connection into a user-friendly, contextual behavioral framework.
An Awareness, Courage, and Love Online Group Intervention for Chinese Older Adults in the Post-Pandemic Era: Study Protocol for a Randomised Controlled Trial
Background. Social connections not only contribute to psychological and emotional well-being but also positively impact physical health, with social isolation and loneliness linked to early mortality and detrimental health outcomes. Objectives. This study aims to evaluate an online Awareness, Courage, and Love (ACL) group intervention designed to enhance social connectedness and subjective well-being while reducing loneliness, depression, and anxiety among older adults. Methods. This randomised controlled trial (RCT) will involve an intervention group receiving a 2 h ACL session via videoconferencing. Eligible participants selected after screening will be assigned randomly to either a treatment or waitlist-control group. Participants in both conditions will complete the assessments at three time points, including baseline, post-intervention, and one-month follow-up. Tools for assessing the concerned variables include the Inclusion of Other in the Self Scale, de Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Generalised Anxiety Disorder 2-item (GAD-2) Scale, and World Health Organisation—Five Well-Being Index (WHO-5). Conclusions. This study will offer a robust framework for investigating the impact of the online ACL intervention on loneliness and social connectedness among Chinese older adults. The result of this study will reach theoretical, empirical, practical, and teaching significance on mental health care strategies for Chinese older adults.
Therapeutic Change Processes in Functional Analytic Psychotherapy
This paper discusses the mechanism of change and therapeutic techniques central to Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP). Based on the experimental analysis of behavior, contingencies of reinforcement are viewed as an important mechanism of change leading to significant therapeutic improvements. The issue addressed in this paper concerns how a therapist can make maximum use of contingencies of reinforcement, given that the client´s problems occur in daily life. FAP emphasizes the client-therapist relationship as providing opportunities for the immediate shaping and reinforcement of improved behavior. The principles of functional analysis are used to explain how actual instances of daily life problems can occur during the session, providing opportunities for therapeutic change, and then mediating generalization from improvements during the session to daily life. Central concepts discussed in this paper include: clinically relevant behavior (CRB), natural reinforcement, interpersonal processes, the behavioral implications of an intense and emotional therapistclient relationship, private behavior, cognitions as behavior, and the behavioral analysis of language (verbal behavior). Five rules that guide therapists in facilitating intense and transformative work with their clients are also discussed.
Estudio de réplica con control aleatorizado de la eficacia de una intervención basada en el modelo Consciencia, Coraje y Amor A Replication Randomized Controlled Trial of an Awareness, Courage, and Love Intervention.
A Replication Randomized Controlled Trial of an Awareness, Courage, and Love Intervention. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a one session online intervention based on the Awareness, Courage and Love Model from Functional Analytic Psychotherapy to promote intimacy in couples during the COVID-19 pandemic. A sample of seventeen couples (dyads) from Argentina, older than 18 years old that were cohabitating in a situation of social distancing during the COVID-19 were randomly allocated into either the intervention or control group for a single 2-hour online group session. Both groups responded to two instruments that assessed the studied variables in three moments (pre, post and follow up). For data analysis it was used Generalized Estimation Equations to compare the change scores over time between the groups. The experimental group obtained a higher score in the VDs and the differences were maintained at one week of follow-up. The preliminary findings support the efficacy of this short intervention to foster closeness and intimacy in couples during situations of social isolation
Therapist Grief and Functional Analytic Psychotherapy: Strategic Self-Disclosure of Personal Loss
Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP), a behavioral approach that focuses on the development of genuine and meaningful therapeutic relationships including the strategic use of disclosure, provides a framework for therapist self-disclosure during times of personal loss. This article briefly outlines FAP and provides an example of FAP in practice following the death of the first author’s mother. Qualitative data from a client questionnaire on the impact of this disclosure are presented, which suggest that the disclosure was a positive experience for most but not all clients. The article concludes with clinical guidelines that can enhance therapeutic effectiveness whether or not therapists choose to disclose loss to their clients and general precautions for treading in this emotionally intense territory.
