Shadow People
According to folk tradition, you are most likely to see shadow people from the corner of your eye. While some stories about shadow people fit Carl Jung's concept of the shadow self, others told in New York State do not emphasize negativity. In Potsdam, some people have reported seeing a shadowy man who wears a top hat. There seems to be no compelling reason for the man to appear, which tells us that the past can break into the present with very little warning. A more specific reason for a shadow person to appear is to help visitors understand about painful past experiences. Dramatic sightings of shadow people have taken place at Rolling Hills Asylum in East Bethany, New York. Several YouTube videos of shadow people are discussed.
Here, Kitty, Kitty, Kitty!
Cats are among the most powerful regarding ghostly resonance. Edgar Allan Poe's story \"The Black Cat\" recounts the horrifying death and reappearance of Pluto, a black and white cat. Settlers in early America feared black cats, associating them with witchcraft. A couple of years ago, my students and I had a strange encounter with a cat during a field trip to an allegedly haunted place on our campus: the basement of Old Rafuse Hall, an office building that once functioned as a dormitory.
George Ward - Oh! That Low Bridge!
Singing and playing the banjo, concertina, and other instruments, Gregory Ward helps us feel the emotions of Erie Canal diggers, teamsters, pilots, and travelers: pride, excitement, frustration, and sadness. \"Fifteen Miles on the Erie Canal\" (sometimes called \"Fifteen Years on the Erie Canal\" and \"Mule Named Sal\") is very well known in the United States; I learned to sing it in grade school and am fairly certain that most of my fellow Baby Boomers did too.Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, http:llwww.eriecanalway.org The Erie Canal Museum, http:||eriecanal museum.org Erie Canal Song, http:||www.eriecanalsong.com George's CDs are available online (http:// www. nyfolkk)re.org|galkry|store|music.Ыml) and in the NYFS gallery shop.
Ghosts moving furniture
[...]the new occupants decide to let Aunt Sylvina keep the furniture as she wishes it to be. Since the early 1990s, students have made legend quests to this basement to see where Gus allegedly made the transition from the busy life of a college student to the limited existence of a ghost.
Mountain magic
Did aliens visit our planet in ancient times, demonstrating their superior skills by building huge, awe-inspiring monuments? Nobody knows why the Incas created Machu Picchu, but it demonstrates spiritual meaning, because it was designed so that the sun's first rays strike the Sun Temple's windows on June 21, the summer solstice. Since the publication of Bingham's popular Lost City of the Incas in 1981, Machu Picchu has attracted tourists from all over the world. [...]at the top of the mountain trail, our eyes feasted on the famous view.
Home, sweet Homewood
Hugh Grant, a beloved British actor, paid a visit to Binghamton University with Marc Lawrence, a talented BU alumnus who directed his most recent film, The Rewrite, Both of them came to our campus that freezing February day because The Rewrite, a romantic comedy about a reluctant screenwnting professor, had been partially filmed here. Binghamton residents proudly point to the carousel in the park, which stands near a plaque honoring \"Walking Distance,\" and a local legend claims that Serling's ghost haunts the carousel.
Legend quests to Lily Dale
During the long drive down the Southern Tier Expressway, I told stories about the Fox sisters' experiences, mediums' encounters with spirits, and magician Harry Houdini's efforts to prove that mediums at Lily Dale were fakers. Once we had arrived and parked our car at Angel House, the bed-and-breakfast where we were staying, we immediately took a walk to visit the Lily Dale Museum and view the remains of the sacred tree called Inspiration Stump.
New York's haunted bars
Hotel staff members do not identify this restless ghost as Dylan Thomas; apparently Thomas prefers his familiar table at the White Horse Tavern. At the Holiday Inn Grand Island near Buffalo, guests talk about the ghost of a little girl who perished in a fire on the site where the hotel was built.
Children who see and hear ghosts
Since Andrea had felt very close to her grandfather, she was glad to see him, though she didn't tell most people what had happened for fear that they would think she was strange. Today a photograph stands at the place where the home once stood, reminding visitors to Lily Dale of the experiences of these two little girls. Since 2010,1 have been fortunate to know Nicole Rose, a wonderful young woman from Horseheads, NY, who demonstrated an ability to communicate with spirits as a small child.
