Starz parlays targeting wins with new Hispanic shows
Having targeted African-American and women viewers with original content, Starz will reach out to Hispanic viewers with a number of new projects. The premium network will launch several Hispanic-targeted series based on popular Spanish-language stories, Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said at the network's Television Critics Association press tour here. The shows are an effort to reach second-generation, bilingual Hispanic viewers who watch premium channels. Among the new shows is Maleficio, based on the popular Mexican production El Maleficio, Albrecht said.
Lear's golden age woe: Who can keep up?
In an interview, legendary television producer Norman Lear talked about the golden age of television. With the amount of content everywhere, content makers have to be lucky enough to have their shows seen by the right people. But certainly the opportunity to get on stage exists greater than it ever did. When you have a Netflix and an Amazon, and they're picking up the show, not just the pilot, there's more opportunity to be heard than ever before.
TCA notes: Shushing trash talk, saving species and loving Netflix
The Television Critics Association (TCA) tour is known for its unusual and often memorable moments as network executives and talent face the firing line of questions from often-cranky critics. While the cable portion of the TCA was relatively tame with regards to a war of words between critics and on-stage personnel, a few notable exchanges occurred over the four-day period. Starz CEO Chris Albrecht during his July 31 session took writers to task for perpetuating a perceived war of words between his network and HB0 regarding their respective sports-related series, Survivor's Remorse and Batters. Director Louie Psihoyos (The Cove) wasted no time in urging writers to \"join the team\" by signing up at racing extinction.com for alerts regarding the film, which will air in December.
Zucker makes mark, starts CNN makeover
It didn't take long for Jeff Zucker to start the overhaul of CNN. The newly minted CNN Worldwide president cleaned house last week by letting go several on-air personalities while hiring new faces, such as ABC News reporter Chris Cuomo. Mark Whitaker, the network's EVP and managing editor, also resigned, clearing the way for Zucker to develop his own core of executives and on-air personalities as he looks to turn around the news network's ratings. Along with Whitaker, CNN political contributors James Carville and Mary Matalin also departed CNN last week, as did on-air contributor Erick Erickson.
