A comparative analysis of open heart surgery and minimally invasive cardiac surgery in exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation
Background Historically, the majority of patients admitted to inpatient exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (EBCR) have undergone open heart surgery (OHS). However, with advances in minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS), these patient groups are also increasingly referred for inpatient EBCR. Herein, we aimed to compare the progress of these groups during rehabilitation. Methods In this prospective, nonrandomized study, 403 inpatient EBCR patients were recruited from December 2022 until September 2023 and stratified into two groups: OHS, and MICS. Participants completed a 3-4-week certified EBCR program. The primary endpoint was defined as a change in the 6-minute walk test (6MWT). Moreover, a comprehensive panel of quality-of-life (QoL) assessments were performed at admission and discharge. Results At baseline, patients with OHS were older (66 years [IQR 59 – 72]), more often male (83%), and underwent emergency/urgent procedures more often (20%) than patients with MICS. Furthermore, patients with MICS showed a better 6MWT at admission (426 meters [IQR 336 – 483]) compared to patients with OHS (381 meters [IQR 299 – 453]). While all patients were able to increase the distance in the 6MWT, regression analyses in fully adjusted models showed no difference in improvements between the two groups (β -5, 95% CI, -26 – 14, p = 0.58). Moreover, during EBCR, we observed significant improvements in all QoL measures in all groups. Conclusions In this study, improvements in fitness, as assessed by the 6WMT were observed in all groups. Furthermore, multiple QoL measures improved equally across all groups. These encouraging results emphasize the importance of EBCR.
Evaluating the Statistics Courses in Terms of the Statistical Literacy: Didactic Pathways of Pre-Service Mathematics Teachers
This study intends to determine the statistical literacy levels of pre-service mathematics teachers and to evaluate the contribution of the statistics courses in the elementary mathematics education curriculum to statistical literacy. A mixed methods research design was adopted. The study group consisted of 202 pre-service mathematics teachers enrolled in the Statistics and Probability course. In the data collection process, a pre-test and post-test was administered to determine the pre-service teachers’ statistical literacy before and after the statistical course, and classroom observations were performed to identify the contribution of the statistics course to statistical literacy. The Rasch model was used for validity-reliability analyses, and one-way ANOVA tests were used to analyze the quantitative data. Content analysis was utilized in the analysis of qualitative data, which revealed that statistical literacy levels of pre-service teachers are generally low, generally influencing the competence of pre-service teachers. The pre-service teachers failed in the sample selection component in the pre-test and data interpretation in the post-test, while they were more successful with table and graphs in the pre-test and sample selection in the post-test. The comparative analysis of revealed statistically significant differences in favor of U4 in the pre-test, but in favor of U1 in the post-test. It was concluded that practices included in the statistics lessons could be effective on these differences.
Coleridge’s Revisionary Practice from 1814 to 1818
This thesis is an examination of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s revisionary activity from 1814 to 1818, considering the integral role of William Wordsworth’s The Excursion, published as part of The Recluse in 1814, on Coleridge’s conception of his discrete oeuvre. It is via a detailed analysis of the way Coleridge ceased to speak “through” Wordsworth that this thesis unfolds its principal argument on Coleridge’s revisionary activity. I principally consider the revisions at work in the Biographia Literaria (1817), Sibylline Leaves (1817) and the 1818 rifacciamento to The Friend (the periodical originally issued in 1809-1810). Taking into account Coleridge’s newly-emerging and subsequently evolving responses to Immanuel Kant’s critical philosophy in the 1790s and 1800s, I will argue that the already-existing “radical Difference” between Coleridge and Wordsworth ever since the Lyrical Ballads (1798) and the “Preface” (1800) further intensified following Wordsworth’s failure to bring their grand scheme for a “first genuine philosophical poem”, The Recluse, into completion. Especially after The Prelude Coleridge heard in 1807, The Excursion by means of his “comparative censure” fell short of meeting the long-cherished expectations. Whereas Coleridge’s organic view of the world involved the recognition of an active mind seeking universal “Truth” through the inner synthetic faculties as well as the empirical laws in nature, Wordsworth’s poem was founded upon an obscurely precarious ground between the phenomenal world and the inner self. Ultimately, Coleridge’s disappointment with The Excursion on the basis of his theories on language and imagination, and the ensuing detachment from Wordsworth and their joint oeuvre gave him the autonomy to revise his past works in a way that ensured formation of a more sober relationship with his own past and a dialogic friendship with Wordsworth in which Coleridge came to realise the importance of speaking to a friend.
Ögretmen Adaylarinin Teknopedagojik Egitim Yeterliliklerinin Incelenmesi 1
The purpose of this study is to investigate preservice elementary mathematics teachers' techno pedagogical knowledge competencies and performance indicators defining these competencies. In this qualitative study, teaching practices which was prepared in learning domain such as numbers and operations, algebra, geometry and measurement, statistics and probability and with different dynamic mathematical software (GeoGebra, Cabri3D and Tinkerplots) by 24 prospective mathematics teachers' candidates were investigated. Data of study was collected through video records and lesson plans filled out by the prospective teachers after their teaching sessions. Data were analyzed within executing the teaching process and problem solving competency fields of technopedagogical education. Findings indicate that technology is used as an explorative tool for the first time in teaching the subject, technology based activities are prepared to prevent misconception; however, they were forced to use technology in assessment evaluation process.
Dinamik Matematik Yazilimlari ile Desteklenmis Ögrenme Ortaminda Ögretmen Adaylarinin Teknolojik Pedagojik Alan Bilgilerinin Incelenmesi /Investigating Pre-service Teachers' Technological Pedagogical Content knowledge in Learning Environment Supported by Dynamic Mathematics Software
The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of learning environments which is supported with dynamic mathematics software on pre-service mathematics teachers' technological pedagogical knowledge in terms of content, self-sufficiency and perceptions. For this purpose, activities were designed with Cabri 3D, Geogebra and Tinkerplots which are dynamic mathematics software(s) for different learning sub-areas. Participants of the study were composed of 132 pre-service elementary mathematics teachers. Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge Scale, Technological, Pedagogical and Content Knowledge Self-Confidence Scale and Perceptions for Technology Use in Teaching Mathematics Scale were used as data collection methods by pre-test and post-test designs. And semi- structured interviews were further conducted with 12 teacher candidates. Finding reveal that learning environments enhanced with dynamic mathematics software has provided a positive contribution in improvement of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), TPACK's self- efficiency and perception towards the use of technology.
The Effect of Stem Education on Pre-Service Science Teachers’ Perception of Interdisciplinary Education
In both Turkey and the other countries, disciplines in curricula emphasize interdisciplinary approach under the heading of “related with the other courses”. STEM education is one of these approaches. One major problem faced by STEM education is the shortage of professional programs which guide teachers about the relationship between STEM disciplines and how to teach it in class. This study was carried out to investigate the change in pre-service science teachers’ perspective of interdisciplinary relation after giving them pre-service education on interdisciplinary STEM education. Case study research model was used in the study. The study was conducted with 32 pre-service science teachers in the third grade in Recep Tayyip Erdogan University, Faculty of Education during the fall semester in the 2015-2016 academic year. In the scope of this study, science pre-service teachers were given pre-service education on interdisciplinary STEM approach; pre-test and post-test data were collected by applying the STEM-WAT and STEM surveys to the participants; and the collected data were analyzed with descriptive analysis. According to the pre-test results, the participants were able to relate science education to various disciplines prior to the STEM education. In the post-test results, despite a decrease in the number of disciplines related to natural sciences, an evident increase was reported in the number of relations with certain disciplines such as Mathematics, Technology and Engineering. Before the STEM education, pre-service teachers were thinking of relating teaching Natural Sciences to just Mathematics in their future classes. After the STEM education, they were reported to think of relating their teaching with Mathematics, Technology and Engineering. Moreover almost all pre-service teachers think of benefiting from relation of natural sciences with other disciplines in their classes. They thought that such relation would be useful for both individual and social development of students and instruction.
