A thermo-economic valuation framework is proposed to assign an economic value to industrial waste heat streams. The methodology integrates thermodynamic heat-quality degradation, represented through logarithmic mean temperature difference (LMTD)-based thermal decay, with market-indexed valuation using natural gas substitution benchmarks. To account for operational uncertainty, a Monte Carlo simulation and a two-state Markov chain were implemented to represent stochastic dispatch conditions of natural gas engines within an industrial park configuration. The results indicate that operational variability has a limited influence on waste heat valuation compared with the dominant effect of natural gas price indexation and transport-distance-related thermal degradation. Under the representative case study conditions, supplier revenues ranged from approximately USD 60,000 to USD 320,000 per year depending on prevailing gas prices, while consumers achieved estimated energy cost reductions between 22% and 62%. An exergy-based comparison was additionally performed to contextualize the thermodynamic quality of the recovered heat stream. The proposed framework provides a practical methodology for evaluating industrial waste heat under localized energy exchange and fuel substitution applications.

Work–Family Integration (WFI) is the decision-making process that enables an individual to effectively balance work, family, and personal responsibilities, generating a level of personal satisfaction aligned with the management of these demands. This research aims to explore the potential links between personal competencies facilitating work and family integration (WFI Competencies), employer-provided support (WFI Support), perceived satisfaction in role integration (WFI Satisfaction), and their association with organizational performance indicators and the overall health of professionals in dependent employment. Data were obtained via an online questionnaire administered to 270 professionals possessing a university education or higher, employed in public or private organizations spanning various sectors in Venezuela. The data were subsequently analyzed utilizing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The study was divided into two main parts: the factorial analysis (both exploratory and confirmatory) of measurement models and the analysis of the relationships and modeling inherent to the structural model. Initially, two diagnostic instruments were developed, one for WFI Competencies and another for WFI Indicators; though applied simultaneously, their structuring and validation were conducted separately. In the subsequent phase, conceptual models for structural analysis were defined. A positive relationship was observed between WFI Support and WFI Satisfaction, corroborating findings from previous research. The relationships between WFI Competencies and Satisfaction led to insights into the necessity of training to strengthen the personal decision-making process under the dual pressures of work and family roles. Future longitudinal studies could elucidate the effects of relationships within such programs on WFI Satisfaction. Concerning organizational indicators, this study found that WFI Satisfaction positively correlates with organizational commitment, enhancing work productivity and mitigating negative health effects. This research presents a model that could be replicated in other countries and with various sample types, facilitating comparative analyses that enrich the body of knowledge on this subject.

A Bio-Inspired Method for Engineering Design Optimization Inspired by Dingoes Hunting Strategies

A novel bio-inspired algorithm, namely, Dingo Optimization Algorithm (DOA), is proposed for solving optimization problems. The DOA mimics the social behavior of the Australian dingo dog. The algorithm is inspired by the hunting strategies of dingoes which are attacking by persecution, grouping tactics, and scavenging behavior. In order to increment the overall efficiency and performance of this method, three search strategies associated with four rules were formulated in the DOA. These strategies and rules provide a fine balance between intensification (exploitation) and diversification (exploration) over the search space. The proposed method is verified using several benchmark problems commonly used in the optimization field, classical design engineering problems, and optimal tuning of a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller are also presented. Furthermore, the DOA’s performance is tested against five popular evolutionary algorithms. The results have shown that the DOA is highly competitive with other metaheuristics, beating them at the majority of the test functions.
