Institutional Film and Social Public Policies in Portugal during the Late Authoritarian Regime (1957–1969)
2023
The aim of this article is to contribute to a better understanding of the complex, diffuse, and negotiated relationship between the use of cinema and Portuguese government practices during the authoritarian regime in Portugal. The study focuses on the engagement of the Junta de Acção Social (JAS, Social Action Committee), a Portuguese public body. It was created in 1956 to implement the Corporatist and Social Training Plan that produced, bought, and distributed institutional films about work and education. The article analyzes the national and transnational conditions of the development of a type of governmentality regarding social public policies, molded by the organization of the field of institutional films, and the comprehensive dissemination of the film industry in Portuguese society.

School Architecture: An Analysis of the Role of the State in the (Re)Configuration of the Profession
2018
Objectives This article aims at discussing the relationship between a specific public policy and the professional field of architecture through the analysis of the Portuguese Secondary School Modernization Program (SSMP). Methods The study was conducted in a set of 13 schools renovated within the SSMP, based on qualitative and quantitative methods, and in this article particular emphasis is given to the content analysis of the interviews conducted with architects. Results The analysis shows how the SSMP has had an impact on the architects’ profession in Portugal, discussing: (i) the extent to which the program calls into question the architects’ autonomy in the exercise of their profession; and (ii) how it contributes to the transformation of architectural knowledge and to the (re)configuration of the profession in the domain of school architecture. Conclusions The research allowed us to conclude that an education policy program such as the SSMP had an impact on the architects’ profession in Portugal, providing a series of insights into how public works contribute toward shaping the profession and the labor market. One of the particularities of school architecture central to the discussion is the ability of listening and mapping the needs of such complex users as a school community in order to translate an educational project into an architectural design.

Job satisfaction (JS) is a key indicator in health-related professions. This variable can be crucial to the performance of healthcare workers as well as to patients’ perception of the care provided. However, JS can be influenced by personal and organizational variables and the variables that interface between these two domains, such as work–family conflict (WFC), organizational support, and work–family support programs. In this sense, the main objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between family-friendly practices (FFPs) made available by organizations and used by workers, WFC, and JS. To this end, the present study uses mixed data (quantitative and qualitative) obtained from healthcare workers in Portugal. A total of 1495 workers participated in the study. The results indicate that the number of FFPs made available and used by healthcare workers is very small. There is a negative relationship between FFP availability and WFC as well as between WFC and JS. Conversely, FFP availability is positively associated with JS. Finally, FFP availability partially mediates the relationship between WFC and JS. Qualitative data support the importance of practices that help reconcile work and family life, which may have an impact on occupational indicators such as JS.

2011
The article analyses precarious work among the young people in the 27 EU member states. It seeks to contribute to an understanding of the conditions relating to the integration of young people into the labour market in three decades (precisely, in 1988, 1998 and 2008), from a perspective that compares the coun- tries. The information is derived fromEurostat sources; as its central indicator it takes the rate of temporary work and the interrelations between the young people's qualification levels and the reasons cited for being in temporary work. A multivariate analysis was carried out: principal components analysis for categorical data (CatPCA). This allows us to present the differences between European Union countries, as well as the link between education and labour-market integration processes.

Regulating procedures in public schools: between formal centralism to informal appropriation
2012
The analysis examines and reflects on the way in which the work coordination processes in school organisations, namely in terms of the conception and planning of education, are set out in the external evaluation reports of schools and by their respective boards. It is based on information in the reports of the external evaluation of schools in three distinct regions of Portugal: Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, Alentejo and Algarve, and on interviews conducted with the governors of 20 schools. This approach sheds light on the ways in which the structuring processes are formalised; it also highlights the importance of the informal appropriation processes and mechanisms (reciprocal adjustment) that take place in both the construction and operationalisation of the formal regulation processes in the management of Portuguese schools (standardisation). The authors' objective in this article is to reflect on a set of deontological and theoretical/methodological questions that face sociologists in the particular case of their research on professionals and professional associations. The starting point for this reflection was a 2008 study on the healthcare professions field, which is considered within the overall framework of some broader thoughts on the way in which sociologists work. Evaluation of Quality Management Procedures for the Implementation of SAP in a Luxury Leather Goods Industry
2024
This dissertation, part of the Master's Degree in Operations Engineering and Management, was completed at ATEPELI - Ponte de Lima, a company that makes luxury leather goods components. The project aimed to evaluate and improve quality management processes to reduce production disruptions during the implementation of the SAP system, using the Action Research method. The luxury group that owns ATEPELI started implementing SAP across its ateliers to make processes faster, simpler, and more efficient. This study analysed the atelier’s current situation and focused on the quality department’s processes: Operational Quality, Material Quality, New Product Quality, and Customer Quality. The analysis found gaps in defect identification, stock management, meeting return deadlines, and metal parts waste. Improvement proposals included setting up quality control stations at the end of production lines, creating a new defect identification list, better control of repair times, setting standards for customer returns, redesigning the material control station layout, and introducing a process to reuse metal parts: Dekittage. Prior to SAP’s GoLive, resources were invested in activities to help workers understand the upcoming digital changes and their benefits. This effort is believed to have led to better results at ATEPELI - Ponte de Lima compared to other ateliers in the group. The results showed improvements in quality management KPIs, helping to identify whether to focus on material purchases or production processes. The estimated reuse of 74% of metal parts that were previously discarded will allow an average save over €25,000 per month. During SAP GoLive, inventory deviation was less than 0.01%, and production efficiency was over 100%. This research offers practical insights into anticipating problems, gradually implementing changes, and minimising disruptions in quality processes during SAP implementation.
