تدور أحداث الرواية في عام ألف وثمانمئة واثنين وسبعين، حيث كان من العسير التصديق بأنه يمكن للإنسان أن يقوم برحلة مثل هذه في تلك المدة، وتبدأ الرواية بتحدي \"فيلياس فوغ\" لأعضاء ناديه في لندن بأنه سيرتحل حول العالم في ثمانين يوما فقط، ويعقدون رهانا قدره عشرون ألف جنيه إسترليني، وفي نفس الوقت تدور الأخبار عن سرقة نفس المبلغ من أحد بنوك إنجلترا، يبدأ \"فوغ\" وخادمه الرحلة بالذهاب إلى ميناء السويس في مصر، حيث يلتقي الخادم بمحقق متخف يبحث عن سارق البنك، ومن مصر يتجهون إلى الهند، ومنها إلى هونغ كونغ، حيث يعترف المحقق للخادم بأنه في تلك المهمة للقبض على سيده، ولكن الخادم يعتقد أنه مدسوس من قبل أعضاء النادي لإفشال الرحلة، ويعمل على مساعدة \"فوغ\"، وفي المحطة التالية التي كانت سان فرانسيسكو يقرر المحقق مساعدتهم على إنجاح الرحلة، من أجل إلقاء القبض على \"فوغ\" في إنجلترا، وبعد العديد من المغامرات يصل \"فوغ\" إلى لندن متأخرا خمس دقائق، ليعتقد أنه خسر الرهان، ليتبين للخادم بعد ذلك أنهم وصلوا قبل التاريخ المحدد بيوم كامل لعبورهم خط التاريخ الدولي بارتحالهم شرقا، ويكسبون الرهان بالفعل .
