The COVID-19 lockdown placed individuals at significant risk of social isolation. Particularly, older people were more vulnerable to the deleterious effects on mental and physical health caused by the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine, in which social confinement was associated with aggravated cognitive function among older adults. Correspondingly, it concerns the repercussions of the lockdown on the cognitive function of patients with dementia or Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) during the pandemic. This study aimed to assess the hypothesis that COVID-19 might cause cognitive decline in dementia patients due to social isolation by assessing changes in Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores between the pre and post-pandemic era. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library for eligible studies from inception to April 2023. We included studies reporting the MMSE in patients with dementia or MCI one year prior to the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and one year after the lockdown. Standardized mean differences (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were pooled with a random-effects model. Among 4,160 studies, twelve were included, comprising 4,096 patients with dementia or MCI. Patients with dementia exhibited significant MMSE decline compared to pre-pandemic levels (SMD = 0.341, P < 0.001). Similarly, MCI patients demonstrated an MMSE decline during lockdown (SMD = 0.315, P = 0.015). Sub-analyses of dementia types also indicated cognitive decline during lockdown, and a 12-month follow-up revealed an MMSE decline among dementia patients. During the COVID-19 lockdown, there was an overall decline in MMSE scores amongst those with dementia or MCI when compared to pre-pandemic parameters.

Abstract Aim Our objective was to assess the extent to which reference sites within the Caraça Sanctuary protect surface water quality and physical habitat structure. We expected that outside the Sanctuary, human pressures—such as urbanization, untreated domestic sewage discharge, and riparian deforestation—would result in poorer water quality and altered physical habitat structure. We hypothesized that the Caraça Sanctuary maintains streams with high physical habitat integrity and water quality. Methods Data were collected from 28 stream sites, including assessments of 22 physical habitat attributes and 12 water quality parameters. In addition, land use and land cover in the upstream microbasins were analyzed, and a rapid assessment protocol was applied at each site to evaluate riparian vegetation and physical habitat diversity. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to identify the key variables explaining variation among sites and to distinguish those located within and outside the Sanctuary. Two PCA biplots were generated: one for the habitat structure data and another for the water quality data. Results The first two PCA axes explained 50% of the variability in physical habitat structure and 48% in water quality, with the latter most affected at sites near urban and mining areas. Conclusions The results indicate that the Caraça Sanctuary provides a valuable reference area for the upper Rio Doce basin.

Obesity represents a global health problem and is characterized by metabolic dysfunctions and a low-grade chronic inflammatory state, which can increase the risk of comorbidities, such as atherosclerosis, diabetes and insulin resistance. Here we tested the hypothesis that the genetic deletion of metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) may rescue metabolic and inflammatory features present in BACHD mice, a mouse model of Huntington’s disease (HD) with an obese phenotype. (double mutant mice). Our results showed that the double mutant mice present decreased body weight as compared to BACHD mice in all tested ages and reduced visceral adiposity as compared to BACHD at 6 months of age. Additionally, 12-month-old double mutant mice present increased adipose tissue levels of adiponectin, decreased leptin levels, and increased IL-10/TNF ratio as compared to BACHD mice. Taken together, our preliminary data propose that the absence of mGluR5 reduce weight gain and visceral adiposity in BACHD mice, along with a decrease in the inflammatory state in the visceral adipose tissue (VAT), which may indicate that mGluR5 may play a role in adiposity modulation.

Understanding university students’ cooking skills is essential for guiding actions aimed at improving dietary quality through culinary practices. The university environment offers a unique opportunity to promote health and quality of life among young adults, making the development of cooking-related competencies a valuable strategy for fostering healthy eating habits. This study aimed to analyze the cooking skills of undergraduate students. This is a cross-sectional study, with data collected between October 2020 and March 2021, with undergraduate students (n = 3138) from 4 public universities in Brazil. The Brazilian Questionnaire for the Assessment of Cooking Skills and Healthy Eating was used to collect data. Logistic regressions were used to assess the associations of cooking skills with socioeconomic variables. Of the total students, 72.6% were female, with a median age of 22 (20–26) years, and 68.0% demonstrated high cooking skills. High cooking skills were associated with female students, those who had learned how to cook through classes, courses, or school, as well as those who had acquired skills through self-directed methods, such as the internet, cookbooks, or TV programs.. Logistic regression analysis showed that across all universities, students with high knowledge of culinary terms and techniques and high availability and accessibility of fruits and vegetables were less likely to have low or intermediate culinary skills. Therefore, interventions focused on cooking skills in the study population should primarily target male students, encouraging undergraduates to learn how to cook independently, enhancing the availability and accessibility of fruits and vegetables, and increasing their knowledge of cooking terms and techniques.

Depression affects several aspects of life, including socioeconomic status, relationships, behavior, emotions, and overall health. The etiology of depression is complex and influenced by various factors, with obesity emerging as a significant contributor. This narrative review aims to investigate the factors associated with the development of depression, with a particular focus on the role of obesity. The literature search was conducted on PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO from May to July 2024. The review highlights the impact of environmental and socioeconomic conditions; lifestyle choices, including physical activity and dietary habits; stress; traumatic experiences; neurotransmitter imbalances; medical and psychological conditions; hormone fluctuations; and epigenetic factors on depression. A key emphasis is placed on the inflammatory processes linked to obesity, which may drive the bidirectional relationship between obesity and depression. The findings suggest that obesity is associated with an increased risk of depression, potentially due to chronic inflammation, neurochemical dysregulation, and the emotional and social challenges related to weight stigma and obesity management. Understanding these interconnected factors is important for developing targeted interventions to address both obesity and depression, leading to improved quality of life for those affected.

Background/Objectives: Cooking skills refer to the confidence, attitude, and application of knowledge to perform culinary preparations. This study aimed to characterize the cooking skills and associated variables in undergraduates from public universities in northeast Brazil. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, with data collected between October 2020 and March 2021. Undergraduates (n = 1203) from two federal institutions participated, the Federal University of Alagoas—UFAL, and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte—UFRN, in northeast Brazil. The Brazilian Questionnaire for the Assessment of Cooking Skills and Healthy Eating was used to assess cooking skills. The questionnaire was sent to institutional e-mails and answered online. Results: Most students (63.6%) presented high cooking skills, 35.6% intermediate cooking skills, and 0.8% low cooking skills. Logistic regressions showed that students who declared not having learned to cook alone/internet/books/TV programs (AOR = 1.60; 95% CI = 1.175–2.17) were more likely to have low/intermediate cooking skills. The high availability and accessibility of fruits and vegetables (AOR = 0.29; 95% CI = 0.18–0.49) and the high knowledge of cooking terms and techniques were inversely associated with low/intermediate cooking skills (AOR = 0.42; 95% CI = 0.32–0.56). Gender, age, and time available for cooking were not associated with cooking skills. Conclusions: Most of the students analyzed presented high cooking skills, and factors such as the way they learned how to cook, the availability and accessibility of fruits and vegetables, and cooking knowledge were associated with their cooking skills. Given this, public policy measures aimed at the university students studied should provide instruction on food preparation, foster culinary knowledge, and encourage and favor the availability and accessibility of fruits and vegetables, positively impacting diet quality and health.

Flavonoids are natural phytochemicals that have therapeutic effects and act in the prevention of several pathologies. These phytochemicals can be found in seeds, grains, tea, coffee, wine, chocolate, cocoa, vegetables and, mainly, in citrus fruits. Neohesperidin, hesperidin and hesperetin are citrus flavonoids from the flavanones subclass that have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential. Neohesperidin, in the form of neohesperidin dihydrochalcone (NHDC), also has dietary properties as a sweetener. In general, these flavanones have been investigated as a strategy to control bone diseases, such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. In this literature review, we compiled studies that investigated the effects of neohesperidin, hesperidin and its aglycone, hesperetin, on bone health. In vitro studies showed that these flavanones exerted an antiosteoclastic and anti- inflammatory effects, inhibiting the expression of osteoclastic markers and reducing the levels of reactive oxygen species, proinflammatory cytokines and matrix metalloproteinase levels. Similarly, such studies favored the osteogenic potential of preosteoblastic cells and induced the overexpression of osteogenic markers. In vivo, these flavanones favored the regeneration of bone defects and minimized inflammation in arthritis- and periodontitis-induced models. Additionally, they exerted a significant anticatabolic effect in ovariectomy models, reducing trabecular bone loss and increasing bone mineral density. Although research should advance to the clinical field, these flavanones may have therapeutic potential for controlling the progression of metabolic, autoimmune or inflammatory bone diseases.

Assessment of somatic mutations in urine and plasma of Wilms tumor patients

Tumor DNA has been detected in body fluids of cancer patients. Somatic tumor mutations are being used as biomarkers in body fluids to monitor chemotherapy response as a minimally invasive tool. In this study, we evaluated the potential of tracking somatic mutations in free DNA of plasma and urine collected from Wilms tumor (WT) patients for monitoring treatment response. Wilms tumor is a pediatric renal tumor resulting from cell differentiation errors during nephrogenesis. Its mutational repertoire is not completely defined. Thus, for identifying somatic mutations from tumor tissue DNA, we screened matched tumor/leukocyte DNAs using either a panel containing 16 WT‐associated genes or whole‐exome sequencing (WES). The identified somatic tumor mutations were tracked in urine and plasma DNA collected before, during and after treatment. At least one somatic mutation was identified in five out of six WT tissue samples analyzed. Somatic mutations were detected in body fluids before treatment in all five patients (three patients in urine, three in plasma, and one in both body fluids). In all patients, a decrease of the variant allele fraction of somatic mutations was observed in body fluids during neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Interestingly, the persistence of somatic mutations in body fluids was in accordance with clinical parameters. For one patient who progressed to death, it persisted in high levels in serial body fluid samples during treatment. For three patients without disease progression, somatic mutations were not consistently detected in samples throughout monitoring. For one patient with bilateral disease, a somatic mutation was detected at low levels with no support of clinical manifestation. Our results demonstrated the potential of tracking somatic mutations in urine and plasma DNA as a minimally invasive tool for monitoring WT patients. Additional investigation is needed to check the clinical value of insistent somatic mutations in body fluids. Here we presented the use of urine and plasma samples of pediatric patients diagnosed with Wilms tumor (WT) as a minimally invasive tool for monitoring the treatment response. We were able to detect tumor‐specific somatic mutations in free DNA from both body fluids, observing a correlation with the clinical aspects of these patients.

High depressive symptomatology reduces emotional reactions to pictures of social interaction

Individuals with severe depressive symptoms present diminished facial expressions compared to healthy individuals. This reduced facial expression, which occurs in most depressive patients could impair social relationships. The current study sought to investigate whether pictures with social interaction cues could elicit different modulations of facial expressions and mood states in individuals with depressive symptoms compared to healthy individuals. A total of 85 individuals were divided into depressive and non-depressive groups based on their beck depression inventory scores. Participants viewed pictures containing neutral (objects), affiliative (people interacting socially), and control (people not interacting) scenes. Electromyographic signals were collected during the entire period of visualization of the blocks, and emotional questionnaires were evaluated after each block to assess sociability and altruism (prosocial states). In non-depressed individuals, affiliative pictures increased the activity of the zygomatic muscle compared to both neutral and control pictures and reduced fear of rejection compared to neutral pictures. During the visualization of the affiliative block, zygomatic major muscle activation was higher and fear of rejection was lower in the non-depressive individuals than in the depressive. These effects reflected the low expressions of smiling and sociability to affiliative pictures in depressive individuals. These findings highlight the importance of smiling and prosocial states in social interactions, especially in these individuals.

Individual and food environmental factors: association with diet

To examine the associations of individual and food environmental factors with fruit and vegetable (F&V) intake in a city in a low-to-middle-income country (LMIC).
Cross-sectional.
Representative sample of the Brazilian Primary Care service known as the Health Academy Program (HAP) in Belo Horizonte, a Brazilian city.
Using a conceptual model as a guide, individual and food environment data were obtained through: (i) face-to-face interviews with participants aged 20 years or older; and (ii) F&V food store audits. A broad set of individual, household, and community and consumer nutrition environment variables was investigated. Multilevel linear regression was used to quantify area-level variations in F&V intake and to estimate associations with the factors.
Eighteen HAP centres were selected and 2944 participants and 336 food stores were included. F&V intake varied between contexts, being higher in areas with better socio-economic conditions and food store quality, such as specialised F&V markets. Individual-level factors, including age, income, food insecurity, stage of change, self-efficacy and decisional balance, were significantly associated with F&V intake. After controlling for individual-level characteristics, greater F&V intake was also associated with higher quality of food stores.
In one of the first studies to comprehensively assess the food environment in an LMIC, individual-level factors accounted for the largest variation in F&V intake; however, the food environment was also important, because area-level variables explained 10·5 % of the F&V intake variation. The consumer nutrition environment was more predictive of healthy eating than was the community nutrition environment. The findings suggest new possibilities for interventions.
