Illegal wildlife trade exerts severe pressure on wild parrot populations, and confiscated parrots often end up in rescue centers where they are rehabilitated for release. However, parrots kept in captivity often develop potentially maladaptive behaviors, including attraction to humans. This behavior can increase the risk of recapture. We modified and tested a previously published human aversion training (HAT) protocol designed to reduce human attraction in confiscated Amazona parrots. The HAT consisted of observers either on the ground or on a ladder, offering food to a single individual and then feigning capture of birds that approached or failed to move away from the observer. Twelve Yellow-naped Amazons (Amazona auropalliata) underwent 36 sessions of HAT over a 14-week period. Ten additional birds were held without training as a control. All birds were evaluated through food offer tests (FOTs) before, during, and after the experiment (FOT scores ranged from 1 when the bird approached the observer to 6 when the bird flew away). Over the training period, both groups showed increased aversion to people. However, contrary to our predictions, aversion scores were not higher for the group given aversion training. Aversion training also did not have a strong impact on fate post-release: within a month of release, 40% of the 22 birds were recaptured in a nearby village, including 4 treatment and 5 control birds. Overall, these results suggest that holding these birds in monospecific groups increased aversion to humans. However, the intense training aversion protocol did not further increase the fear of humans in these Amazona parrots, many of which may have been pets for years before entering the program. This study suggests that rehabilitation and release projects should regularly evaluate the impacts of their training programs and improve or eliminate costly protocols that do not achieve stated objectives.

Age Difference, Not Food Scarcity or Sibling Interactions, May Drive Brood Reduction in Wild Scarlet Macaws in Southeastern Peru

Avian brood reduction was initially thought to be driven by insufficient food supply. Now it is more commonly considered a consequence of asynchronous hatching and resulting siblicide, direct filial infanticide (where parents kill specific chicks) or indirect filial infanticide (where parents starve specific chicks). In psittacines, brood reduction has been reported, but the mechanisms and causes remain unexplored. In this paper, we test the hypotheses that Scarlet Macaw chick starvation is driven by (1) sibling aggression, (2) food scarcity, and (3) parental food allocation based on (a) chick hatch weight and (b) chick age differences. We documented wild Scarlet Macaw behavior in lowland Peru in 37 nests over 19 seasons using morphological measurements and nest videos. Chick starvation was the leading cause of chick mortality (27% of all second-hatched chicks starve, and nearly all third- and fourth-hatched chicks starve). We found no evidence that starvation was caused by (1) sibling conflicts or (2) food availability. We did find parental food distribution favors first-hatched chicks, with larger age differences increasing the chances of second chick starvation. This study offers insights into brood reduction among Neotropical cavity-nesting birds and enhances our capacity to develop scientifically informed management strategies to support endangered psittacines.

Increasing Survival of Wild Macaw Chicks Using Foster Parents and Supplemental Feeding

The use of foster parents has great potential to help the recovery of highly endangered bird species. However, few studies have shown how to successfully use these techniques in wild populations. Scarlet Macaws (Ara macao macao) in Perú hatch 2–4 chicks per nest but about 24% of all chicks die of starvation and on average just 1.4 of them fledge per successful nest. In this study we develop and test new techniques to increase survival of wild Scarlet Macaw chicks by reducing chick starvation. We hypothesized that using foster parents would increase the survival of chicks at risk of starvation and increase overall reproductive success. Our results show that all relocated macaw chicks were successfully accepted by their foster parents (n = 28 chicks over 3 consecutive breeding seasons) and 89% of the relocated chicks fledged. Overall, we increased fledging success per available nest from 17% (2000 to 2016 average) to 25% (2017 to 2019) and decreased chick death by starvation from 19% to 4%. These findings show that the macaw foster parents technique and post relocation supplemental feeding provide a promising management tool to aid wild parrot population recovery in areas with low reproductive success.

Books, articles, government documents, and other written accounts of tropical biology and conservation reach a tiny fraction of their potential audience. Some texts are inaccessible because of the language in which they are written. Others are only available to subscribers of developed-world journals, or distributed narrowly within tropical countries. To examine this dysfunction in the tropical literature--and what it means for conservation--we tried to compile everything ever written on the biology and conservation of the department of Madre de Dios, Peru, in southwestern Amazonia. Our search of libraries, databases, and existing bibliographies uncovered 2,202 texts totaling roughly 80,000 pages. Texts date from 1553 to 2004, but 93% were written after 1970. Since that year the publication rate has increased steadily from fewer than 10 texts/year to nearly 3 texts/week in 2004. Roughly half of the Madre de Dios bibliography is in Spanish-language texts written by Peruvian authors and mostly inaccessible outside Peru. Most of the remaining material is English-language texts written by foreign authors and largely inaccessible in Peru. Foreign authors tended to write about ecological studies with limited relevance to on-the-ground conservation challenges, whereas Peruvian authors were more likely to make specific management recommendations. The establishment of a Web-based digital library for Neotropical nature would help make the tropical literature a more efficient resource for science and conservation. Additional recommendations include investing in syntheses, translations, popular summaries, and peer-reviewed journals in tropical countries, providing incentives for management-relevant research in tropical protected areas, and reinforcing training of scientific reading and writing in tropical universities.

Several factors may influence the decision of whether family members decide to learn genetic status. Although the main drivers influencing the decisions to seek genetic testing have been widely studied in High‐Income Counties (HIC), these questions remain relatively unknown in Low and Middle‐Income countries (LMICs) such as those in Latin America (LatAm). Method The primary aim of this study was to investigate the psychosocial impact of genetic testing in asymptomatic individuals from families with ADAD. We conducted a non randomized, controlled trial among ADAD families in Colombia and Argentina. The primary outcome included change from baseline in depression and general anxiety in the test group relative to the control group. Participants were categorized based on their decision to learn their genetic status, with further comparisons between mutation‐positive versus mutation‐negative individuals within those informed. Psychological impacts were measuring using validated scales for depression and anxiety in the group relative to the control group. Result Of the 122 eligible participants, 97 completed the GTC protocol; 87 opted to learn their genetic status. There were no clinically significant differences in psychological distress between those who learned their status and those who did not, nor between mutation‐positive and mutation‐negative individuals. Mutation‐positive carriers who learned their genetic status experienced a statistically significant increase in depression scores but remained below the cut‐off point considered indicative of clinically significant depression. Conclusion Our primary finding is showed no clinically meaningful differences in distress‐related outcomes between individuals learning their genetic status relative to those who didn’t. Our findings confirm that genetic testing is well‐tolerated when using a protocol that provides screening, education, counseling, and follow‐up sessions. In addition, we provide preliminary insights into the psychological impact associated with learning one's genetic status in familial AD, contributing significantly to the field of medical genetics in the region.

Background Genetic testing for individuals with dominantly inherited Alzheimer’s disease (DIAD) is now of greater relevance due to the existence of therapeutic trials available to this population. However, the impact and main drivers influencing the decision to seek genetic testing are relatively unknown in Latin America (LatAm). Here we present results from a regional genetic counseling and testing protocol implemented in LatAm. Method Our aim was to investigate the psychosocial impact of genetic testing in asymptomatic individuals from families with DIAD. A non‐randomized, controlled, prospective observational trial was conducted. Asymptomatic, first‐degree relatives of patients with DIAD from families with a presenilin 1, pathogenic variant (p.I416T or p.M146L) were interviewed before and after genetic testing. Group allocation was done according to participants’ choice (non‐randomized). Participants who received their genetic status (GS) were allocated to the test group, while those who opted out were allocated to the observational group. The primary outcome included change from baseline in depression, general anxiety, and health‐related anxiety in the test group relative to the observational group, using linear mixed effects models and chi‐squared tests. Result Forty‐five participants from Colombia and Argentina were invited and enrolled in the study. Thirty‐six individuals completed the genetic counseling sessions, and 25/36 (69.4%) learned their GS. Compared to families in Colombia, participants from Argentina were more likely to seek counseling and learn their GS (8/23, 34.9% vs, 17/20, 85.0%, respectively). Following genetic counseling, we found no significant differences between the group that learned their GS and those who did not learn their GS in anxiety (mean = 13.5, SD = 3.2 vs. 15.1, SD = 2.5, p = 0.2) or depression (mean = 5.4, SD = 2.3 vs. mean = 8.0, SD = 6.5, p = 0.6) scores. For both groups, anxiety and depression scores remained below cutoffs for clinical concern and without significant changes relative to baseline value levels. Conclusion Our pilot study shows that a structured genetic counseling and testing protocol for individuals at‐risk of DIAD is safe. We found relevant cross‐country differences in willingness to learn genetic status, which may reflect differences in religion, educational level, and urban vs rural areas, among others. Future studies should include larger cohorts and expand to other countries in LatAm.

Scarlet Macaw Nesting Ecology and Behavior: Implications for Conservation Management

Documenting parental care by wild birds is important for understanding reproductive success and promoting conservation. However, little is known about how wild parrots care for their offspring in the nest and how to use this knowledge to inform conservation actions. I documented wild Scarlet Macaw parental behavior in the lowland forests of southeastern Peru during 19 breeding seasons. I also tested using wild macaws as foster parents to increase chick survival. I found that females provide the majority of nestling care when the chicks hatch but the proportion of care given by the male gradually increases as the chicks age. I found that (1) chicks are fed on average 3.6 times per hour throughout the nesting period, (2) chicks are fed during the day and at night with major diurnal and nocturnal feeding peaks, and (3) macaw parents can store food in their crops for over 7 hours and use this to feed their chicks at night. I analyzed chick starvation due to brood reduction and found that chick starvation is the leading cause of chick mortality at my site: (1) 27% of all second hatched chicks starve, and (2) nearly all third and fourth hatched chicks starve. I found no evidence that death by starvation was caused by (1) sibling rivalry, (2) macaw food availability in the forest, or (3) hatch weight. I did find that (1) direct control of food distribution within the brood favors first hatch chicks but specifically disfavors second hatch chicks that starve to death and (2) the larger the age difference between brood members the more likely the second chick would starve. The technique of macaw foster parents was categorically successful. All relocated foster chicks were successfully accepted by their foster parents (N = 28 chicks across 3 seasons) and 89% of them fledged. Fostering increased fledging success per available nest from 17% (1999 – 2016) to 25% (2017-2019) and decreased chick death by starvation from 19% to 4%. This research has great potential benefits for in-situ and ex-situ macaw population management and conservation.

METHODS We conducted a non‐randomized controlled trial among ADAD families in Colombia and Argentina. Participants were categorized based on their decision to learn their genetic status (GS), with further comparisons between mutation‐positive versus mutation‐negative participants who learned their status. Psychological impacts were measured using validated scales for anxiety and depression. RESULTS Of the 122 eligible participants, 97 completed the GCT protocol, and 87 opted to learn their GS. There were no clinically significant differences in psychological distress between those who learned their status and those who did not, nor between mutation‐positive and mutation‐negative individuals. DISCUSSION The GCT protocol effectively managed psychological impacts in ADAD families and was positively received, demonstrating the importance of culturally adapted GCT protocols. Highlights We examined the adaptation and efficacy of a GCT protocol in LatAm for families at risk of ADAD. The GCT protocol mitigated psychological distress among at‐risk ADAD families. The study confirms the protocol's cultural appropriateness and psychological safety. Future studies should explore the long‐term psychological and public health impacts of GCT and use of GCT for treatment options.

A Test of the Emergent Norm Theory of Collective Behavior

Objective: The paper uses the timing of evacuation behavior of occupants of the World Trade Center at the time of the explosion of February 26, 1993, to test predictions from Emergent Norm Theory. Method: It uses ordinary least square multiple regression analysis to examine data from a survey done in the first week in May 1993 of 415 people who worked at the World Trade Center. Results: The theory's predictions regarding the additive effects of size of group and preexisting social relationships on the timing of evacuation are supported. However, the findings document important and unexpected interaction effects of these two variables on the effects of perceived threat, resources, and cooperativeness on the timing of evacuation. Conclusion: The results augment the theory by showing the continued importance of enduring social relationships as determinants of collective behavior. Enduring social relationships are not only useful to differentiate collective behavior from institutionalized behavior but also specify the dynamics attending the occurrence of collective behavior.
