Metadata practices for simulation workflows
2025
Computer simulations are an essential pillar of knowledge generation in science. Exploring, understanding, reproducing, and sharing the results of simulations relies on tracking and organizing the metadata describing the numerical experiments. The models used to understand real-world systems, and the computational machinery required to simulate them, are typically complex, and produce large amounts of heterogeneous metadata. Here, we present general practices for acquiring and handling metadata that are agnostic to software and hardware, and highly flexible for the user. These consist of two steps: 1) recording and storing raw metadata, and 2) selecting and structuring metadata. As a proof of concept, we develop the

, a Python tool to help with the second step, and use it to apply our practices to distinct high-performance computing use cases from neuroscience and hydrology. Our practices and the

can readily be applied to existing workflows without the need for substantial restructuring. They support sustainable numerical workflows, fostering replicability, reproducibility, data exploration, and data sharing in simulation-based research.

Simulation speed matters for neuroscientific research: this includes not only how quickly the simulated model time of a large-scale spiking neuronal network progresses but also how long it takes to instantiate the network model in computer memory. On the hardware side, acceleration via highly parallel GPUs is being increasingly utilized. On the software side, code generation approaches ensure highly optimized code at the expense of repeated code regeneration and recompilation after modifications to the network model. Aiming for a greater flexibility with respect to iterative model changes, here we propose a new method for creating network connections interactively, dynamically, and directly in GPU memory through a set of commonly used high-level connection rules. We validate the simulation performance with both consumer and data center GPUs on two neuroscientifically relevant models: a cortical microcircuit of about 77,000 leaky-integrate-and-fire neuron models and 300 million static synapses, and a two-population network recurrently connected using a variety of connection rules. With our proposed ad hoc network instantiation, both network construction and simulation times are comparable or shorter than those obtained with other state-of-the-art simulation technologies while still meeting the flexibility demands of explorative network modeling.

Introduction: Pre-sport games are playful simulations that incorporate core elements of a specific sport. Their prioritization as a method within physical education may enhance the acquisition and improvement of technical and tactical skills in football, thereby facilitating talent identification. Objective: To assess the effects of a physical education model based on football-oriented pre-sport games on the effectiveness of ball dribbling and shooting techniques, compared to a traditional teaching-learning model. Methodology: A quasi-experimental study was conducted with a sufficient sample of male students, divided into two independent groups (Experimental: n=86; Control: n=90), with homogeneous results in three out of four performance tests for dribbling and shooting. The experimental group participated in a six-month program of football-based pre-sport games, while the control group followed a traditional program. Results: Intergroup comparisons at the end of the intervention period revealed statistically significant improvements in the experimental group (Zigzag dribbling: p=0.000; Dribbling with direction change: p=0.000; Shooting power: p=0.000; Shooting accuracy: p=0.000), but not in the control group (Zigzag dribbling: p=0.061; Dribbling with direction change: p=0.597; Shooting power: p=0.172), except for the shooting accuracy test (p=0.003). Independent test results also showed significant improvements in favor of the experimental group (Zigzag dribbling: p=0.004; Dribbling with direction change: p=0.001; Shooting power and accuracy: p=0.000). In a separate talent selection process, most selected football players came from the experimental group. Conclusions: The implementation of pre-sport games may serve as an effective pedagogical strategy to enhance fundamental technical skills in football through physical education. [...]we have contrasted the sample of the students that studied the subject Gender Perspective or Gender Equity with those who did not take that subject to determine how the acquisition of social awareness of gender influences musical imaginariness or if, on the contrary, this kind of imaginariness is made up in the process of socialization at very early ages and it is difficult to modify it through the acquisition of recent notions of gender. The analysis determined that the radio programs of the radio stations that were tuned are entirely presented by men with few exceptions like the program \"I tell you\", which is hosted by two women. [...]the presence of women in the direction of the musical programs is a minority, showing a horizontal segregation in the workplace of communication in radio stations. According to Patricia Digón Regueiro (2000), the studies related to gender and music can be divided into three areas of research: studies on the history of women in music; studies on gender and meaning of music; and studies on gender and musical education (Zavala Girones, 2012; Martinez Escribano, 2011; Diaz Mohedo, 2005; Loizaga Cano, 2005; Viñuela Suárez, 2003; Berrocal de Luna y Gutiérrez Pérez, 2002). OBJECTIVES As we have stated, the music is a true reflection of the society in which we live, reproducing social inequalities and gender relations. [...]its analysis helps us understand the mechanisms of reproduction, control and social subordination.

Socialization of genders occurs in a process of cultural learning of the roles assigned according to sex. It is transversally identified in all cultures. Gender standards and the construction of femininity and masculinity make an inequality-generating binary world. Through a methodology of participative action research, we have chosen the analysis of violence and sexism in music from all institutions and elements of socialization. Because music is a phenomenon of masses around the world which contributes to and keeps strong discriminatory social and cultural imaginariness. In this process of analysis, students have been part of the sample data and they have participated in the development of the first stage of research. First, we have made an analysis of the musical likes from a gender perspective which has allowed us to come to some conclusions regarding sexism and the construction of romantic love imaginariness. Finally, we have contrasted the sample of the students that studied the subject Gender Perspective or Gender Equity with those who did not take that subject to determine how the acquisition of social awareness of gender influences musical imaginariness or if, on the contrary, this kind of imaginariness is made up in the process of socialization at very early ages and it is difficult to modify it through the acquisition of recent notions of gender.

Abstract
Actinobacillus seminis is a causative agent of epididymitis, infertility, and sterility in sexually mature ruminants. Previous studies suggest that sex hormones regulate the expression of A. seminis virulence factors, promote its growth, and support adhesin expression and biofilm formation; however, the effects of these hormones on protease expression are unknown. The effects of testosterone (1–5 ng/ml) and estradiol (5–25 pg/ml) were evaluated on the A. seminis protease expression. Zymograms revealed that both hormones enhanced the secretion of a 50 kDa metalloprotease and a 65 kDa serine protease. The 65 kDa serine protease showed optimal activity at a pH of 6–8, was stable at temperatures up to 70°C, and hydrolyzed bovine hemoglobin and casein; interestingly, this hemoglobin protease was expressed after treatment with sex steroid hormones but not in the presence of catecholamines. This serine-protease presents identity with two A. seminis serine proteases of 50 kDa. The metalloprotease has previously been shown to hydrolyze bovine IgG and fibrinogen and presented identity with a carboxy-terminal protease. Both proteases showed immune cross-reactivity with hyperimmune sera against metalloproteases from A. seminis and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, and with serum against a Mannheimia haemolytica serine protease. Our results suggest that hormones affect the expression of different A. seminis virulence factors, such as proteases, and may play a key role in bacterial pathogenesis.
Sex steroid hormones promote the Actinobacillus seminis colonization and infection of sexually mature sheep and modify its virulence factors expression including proteases.

Use of EFSA Pesticide Residue Intake Model (EFSA PRIMo revision 3)
2018
Since 2007, the EFSA PRIMo (Pesticide Residue Intake Model), an Excel‐based calculation spreadsheet, is the standard tool used at EU level to perform the dietary risk assessment for pesticide residues in the framework of setting and reviewing of maximum residue levels for pesticides under Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 and in the peer review of pesticides under Regulation (EU) No 1107/2009. The model was now updated with regard to food consumption data derived from some recent dietary food surveys. In addition, new functionalities were included in the calculation spread sheet to make the tool more user‐friendly and to allow automatic integration of the EFSA PRIMo in the workflows where dietary risk assessments are performed.
