Prime editing: Mechanism insight and recent applications in plants
Summary Prime editing (PE) technology utilizes an extended prime editing guide RNA (pegRNA) to direct a fusion peptide consisting of nCas9 (H840) and reverse transcriptase (RT) to a specific location in the genome. This enables the installation of base changes at the targeted site using the extended portion of the pegRNA through RT activity. The resulting product of the RT reaction forms a 3′ flap, which can be incorporated into the genomic site through a series of biochemical steps involving DNA repair and synthesis pathways. PE has demonstrated its effectiveness in achieving almost all forms of precise gene editing, such as base conversions (all types), DNA sequence insertions and deletions, chromosomal translocation and inversion and long DNA sequence insertion at safe harbour sites within the genome. In plant science, PE could serve as a groundbreaking tool for precise gene editing, allowing the creation of desired alleles to improve crop varieties. Nevertheless, its application has encountered limitations due to efficiency constraints, particularly in dicotyledonous plants. In this review, we discuss the step‐by‐step mechanism of PE, shedding light on the critical aspects of each step while suggesting possible solutions to enhance its efficiency. Additionally, we present an overview of recent advancements and future perspectives in PE research specifically focused on plants, examining the key technical considerations of its applications.
Corporate governance and dividend pay-out policy in UK listed SMEs
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent to which corporate board characteristics influence the level of dividend pay-out ratio using a sample of UK small- and medium-sized enterprises from 2010 to 2013 listed on the Alternative Investment Market. Design/methodology/approach The data are analysed by employing multivariate regression techniques, including estimating fixed effects, lagged effects and two-stage least squares regressions. Findings The results show that board size, the frequency of board meetings, board gender diversity and audit committee size have a significant relationship with the level of dividend pay-out. Audit committee size and board size have a positive association with the level of dividend pay-out, whilst the frequency of board meetings and board gender diversity have a significant negative relationship with the level of dividend pay-out. By contrast, the findings suggest that board independence and CEO role duality do not have any significant effect on the level of dividend pay-out. Originality/value This is one of the first attempts at examining the relationship between corporate governance and dividend policy in the UK’s Alternative Investment Market, with the analysis distinctively informed by agency theoretical insights drawn from the outcome and substitution hypotheses.

Heterostemma saolaense, a new species from Vietnam is described, illustrated and compared with the similar species Heterostemma maculatum. The two species differ in stem pubescence, peduncle, calyx and corolla size.
Assessment of genetic variability of resistance to gastrointestinal nematode parasites in Creole goats in the humid tropics
Goat production is widespread in the tropics. Goats are very susceptible to gastrointestinal nematode infection, but there is less evidence of their genetic resistance. Genetic resistance of Creole goats to gastrointestinal nematodes has been studied at Guadeloupe in the French West Indies since 1995. The objective of this research was to investigate genetic variation for resistance to gastrointestinal nematode infection, in order to introduce this trait into breeding schemes. Genetic variability was assessed within a Creole experimental flock. Forty-nine sire groups were characterized at weaning and 55 during fattening after weaning. Kids were naturally infected, mainly by Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis. Fecal egg counts were determined once at weaning and every 6 and 7 wk after drenching during fattening. Blood samples were collected every 7 wk during fattening for determination of packed cell volume. Live weights were recorded at weaning and at the beginning and middle of every infection period during fattening. Genetic parameters were estimated using the REML for multivariate animal models. The heritability estimate for transformed fecal egg count was 0.37+/-0.06 at weaning. During fattening, it increased from 0.14+/-0.05 at 4 mo to 0.33+/-0.06 at 10 mo. Heritabilities of packed cell volume ranged from 0.10 to 0.33. At weaning, maternal heritability of fecal egg count reached 0.26 and direct heritability 0.20. After 6 mo of age, maternal effects were found to be unimportant for fecal egg count and packed cell volume. Live weights presented significant genetic variability. Genetic relationships between fecal egg counts and live weight in infected pastures were never significant. Genetic correlations between packed cell volume and live weight decreased from 0.47 to 0.10 from weaning to 10 mo of age. These results demonstrated the feasibility of breeding for improved resistance to nematodes in Creole kids.
Do enterprise zones promote local business development? Evidence from Vietnam
We examined the effects of Vietnamese enterprise zones on local businesses based on different patterns of place-based policies as well as the ownership structure of the zone infrastructure developers (ZIDs). We constructed a panel of communes during 2000–2007 using a census survey of firms having more than nine employees and a census of zones and zone-based firms.We found that place-based policies led to growth in the number of jobs and firms in the communes where enterprise zones were located, even after excluding zone-based firms. Our findings also suggest that privately owned ZIDs worked best under corporate-tax incentives, while zones with a designated central government agency as the ZID had adverse spillover effects on business development in neighboring communes of the same district.
