Freshwater pearl mussels (FPMs, Margaritifera margaritifera, Linnaeus, 1758) are endangered and particularly vulnerable to climate change. To create effective conservation strategies, we studied their thermal tolerance and the impact of elevated water temperatures on growth and survival. Our experiments included field mesocosm studies in five FPM-streams in the Vogtland region (Germany) (2016 to 2020), as well as laboratory experiments at temperatures ranging from 1 to 26 °C. Growth of juvenile FPMs increased significantly within a temperature gradient from 12 to 21 °C. In the streams, maximum growth was 8.9 µm/d in surface water and 6.5 µm/d in the interstitial. The upper thermal tolerance for the mussels ranged from 22.1 to 22.9 °C, resulting in low survival during hot summer periods in 2018 and 2019. Warming during winter (+5 °C) did not significantly affect growth and survival, but survival during winter increased with the pre-overwintering shell length. Exceeding a shell length of about 1100 µm in December indicating gill development corelated to 50% survival. Shell length in December is primarily controlled by growth depending on water temperatures during summer. These findings define the thermal niche of juvenile FPMs (average summer temperatures of 14.5–21 °C) and have implications for water management, conservation strategies, and site selection for releasing captive-breeding mussels.

Human impacts have led to dramatic declines of the endangered freshwater pearl mussel
Margaritifera margaritifera
(FPM) and to a shift of its main distribution areas to more undisturbed but colder headwaters. In this study, we investigated whether feeding on high-quality food (i.e. food rich in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids) can compensate for growth limitations due to low water temperatures and whether food quality influences the survival rate of juvenile FPM. Therefore, we conducted feeding experiments with juvenile FPM at three different temperatures (11, 15 and 19°C) and with three different food sources. Afterwards, mussels were reared in cages in a stream to analyse survival during the first winter. Our results showed that food quality can compensate to some extent for growth limitations due to low water temperatures, but sufficiently high growth rates of juvenile FPM can only be achieved by the availability of high-quality food in warmer (> 15°C) environments. The availability of high-quality food during the main growing season also improves the survival of FPM over the first winter. Consequently, restoration efforts must aim to restore habitats in the historical main distribution areas of FPM and to create habitat conditions that allow the development of high-quality food.

Detritus is an important energy source of stream food webs. Being a mix of allochthonous and autochthonous sources, it is often unknown, which components contribute to the growth of stream organisms. This study focussed on the comparison of two different detritus types (riparian detritus and stream detritus) with respect to food quality and effects on growth as a fitness parameter of juvenile freshwater pearl mussels (FPM). We performed feeding experiments with juvenile FPM under laboratory conditions using the two detritus types from four different natural sources each. Food quality was determined by analysing the fatty acid composition. Stream detritus (conditioned to stream environment including autochthonous microbes) resulted in significantly higher growth rates of juvenile FPM than predominately terrestrial-based riparian detritus indicating higher food quality. Significantly positive correlations were found between mussel growth and different groups of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). This suggests that especially trace substances such as long-chained n-3 PUFAs and a high ratio of n-3 to n-6 PUFAs enhance the food quality of stream detritus for juvenile FPM. These results highlight the importance of instream conditioning of detritus for the food mix in headwater streams and the importance of PUFAs for the development of juvenile FPM.

The freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera is an endangered bivalve which is usually regarded as sedentary, although individual movement has been observed both vertically and horizontally. Little is known about the causes and rates of mussel movement. The objective of this study was to test the effect of microhabitat characteristics on the horizontal movement distance and rates of freshwater pearl mussels. A total of 120 mussels (length range 40–59 mm) were marked individually with passive integrated transponder tags, placed in stream microhabitats differing in their sediment composition and monitored biweekly over a period of 10 weeks. Mussels situated in sand-dominated habitats had a significantly higher mean movement rate (3.2 ± 4.2 cm/day, mean ± SD) than mussels situated in gravel-dominated (1.9 ± 2.7 cm/day) or stone-dominated habitats (1.8 ± 3.2 cm/day). The direction of the movements appeared random; however, an emigration from sandy habitats was observed, probably to avoid dislodgment from these hydraulically unstable habitats. This study demonstrates that freshwater pearl mussels can actively emigrate from unsuitable microhabitats. Once suitable streams with respect to physical, chemical, and biological quality were identified, it is therefore only necessary to identify suitable mesohabitats (area of 10–30 m2) when reintroducing or relocating mussels.

Climate-driven warming during spring destabilises a Daphnia population: a mechanistic food web approach

Temperature-driven changes in interactions between populations are crucial to the estimation of the impact of global warming on aquatic food webs. We analysed inter-annual variability in two data sets from Bautzen reservoir, Germany. In a long-term data set (1981-1999) we examined the pelagic phenology of Daphnia galeata, a keystone species, the invertebrate predator Leptodora kindtii, phytoplankton and Secchi depth in relation to water temperature and the North Atlantic Oscillation index. In a short-term data set (1995-1998) we examined food web relations, particularly the consumption of D. galeata by young-of-the-year (YOY) percids and L. kindtii and rates of population change of D. galeata (abundance, recruitment pattern and non-consumptive mortality). The start of the clear-water stage (CWS) was correlated with winter temperatures. It started 5.8 days earlier per degree warming after warm winters (mean January-March temperature >=2.5°C) compared to cold winters (mean temperature <2.5°C). However, the end of the CWS remained relatively constant. Predation by L. kindtii and YOY percids on D. galeata started distinctly earlier, i.e. by 13.0 and 6.5 days per degree warming, respectively, in years when the average May temperature was high (>=14°C) compared to years when it was low (<14°C). Significant reductions of Daphnia abundance in midsummer occurred only in years in which the mean May temperature exceeded 14°C. This temperature regime resulted in a match of over-exploitation of food resources by Daphnia during the CWS and strong predation by YOY percids and L. kindtii. Consumptive mortality increased at higher rates with a rise in temperature than net recruitment, resulting in lower Daphnia densities at the end of the CWS. Our data suggest that even low warming by 1.7°C during a short, but critical seasonal period, resulting in the coincidence of two or more factors adversely affecting a keystone species, such as Daphnia, may induce changes in whole lake food webs and thus alter entire ecosystems.

Multiple defence strategies of Daphniagaleata against predation in a weakly stratified reservoir

In the presence of size-selective fish daphnids were shown to exhibit two alternative inducible defence strategies: They may either escape predation by active migration or adopt a life history strategy, e.g., reproduce earlier and at a smaller size. Depending on the type of habitat, migration may either be vertically (in deep stratified lakes) or horizontally (in shallow lakes with macrophytes) oriented. Concerning behavioural defence strategies, daphnids living in medium-deep, weakly stratified water bodies with a poorly developed littoral face a dilemma, since the littoral provides no shelter and the availability of a deep-water refuge is unpredictable. We studied the population dynamics, life history changes (size at maturity) and daytime vertical distribution of Daphnia galeata in a weakly stratified reservoir in relation to predation by juvenile fish during 6 years. While temperature gradients were usually small, oxygen concentrations suggest that a low-oxygen refuge for daphnids was available in every year to some extent. Our results indicate that, depending on predation intensity and stratification patterns, daphnids exhibit both, behavioural and life history defences. In years with a high biomass of young-of-the-year (YOY) perch Daphnia abundance declined rapidly at the end of the clear water stage while at the same time the vertical distribution at daytime shifted to deep strata providing a low-oxygen refuge and the size at maturity decreased. However, while the life history response in some years lasted throughout most of the summer period, a shift in daytime vertical distribution was exhibited for much shorter periods. Both traits were much less expressed in years with low YOY fish densities and no negative correlation between them could be verified. We suggest that under high predation pressure in this relatively shallow reservoir no strictly alternative (either behavioural or life history) strategies exist, but that daphnids make use of the full range of possible anti-predator defences available, at least during short periods when predation is most intense.

To predict the coherence in local responses to large-scale climatic forcing among aquatic systems, we developed a generalized approach to compare long-term data of dimictic water bodies based on phenomenologically defined hydrographic events. These climate-sensitive phases (inverse stratification, spring overturn, early thermal stratification, summer stagnation) were classified in a dual code (cold/warm) based on threshold temperatures. Accounting for a latitudinal gradient in seasonal timing of phases derived from gradients in cumulative irradiation (2.2 days per degree latitude), we found a high spatial and temporal coherence in warm–cold patterns for six lakes (84 %) and the Baltic Sea (78 %), even when using the same thresholds for all sites. Similarity to CW-codes for the North Sea still was up to 72 %. The approach allows prediction of phase-specific warming trends and resulting instantaneous or time-delayed ecological responses. Exemplarily, we show that warming during early thermal stratification controls food-web-mediated effects on key species during summer.

Issue Title: Shallow Lakes 2002 The aim of the present study was to analyse and compare the feeding behaviour of large perch (>25 cm total length) in two lakes of different state and corresponding differences in food availability. Investigations were conducted in the Bautzen Reservoir, Germany, (biomanipulated, macrophyte cover <1%) and in Lake Ring, Denmark (non-biomanipulated, macrophyte cover ca. 20%). Fish were sampled regularly using trawl nets and gill nets. We focused our study on seasonal diet patterns. Further, we investigated size-related feeding and predation on both the juvenile fish and invertebrate communities. The availability of Chironominae was high in both lakes (e.g. ca. 1500 ind. m^sup -2^ in Lake Ring), but age-0 fish abundance was most probably higher in Bautzen Reservoir (6.4 individuals m^sup -3^ in the beginning of June 1998). Invertebrates and age-0 fish were the main food components of large perch of both populations. Mean lengths of prey fish were consistently smaller than those in situ. Large perch in Bautzen Reservoir started earlier to feed on age-0 fish, which was not related to prey fish sizes. Predation on the age-0 fish community was distinctly higher in Bautzen Reservoir than in Lake Ring. Generally, invertebrates represented the most important food of large perch in Lake Ring, whereas the by far dominant food resource of large perch in Bautzen Reservoir was the age-0 fish stock. In conclusion, it can be stated that the prey fish availability was an important factor in determining the feeding behaviour of large perch.[PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]

Predation by piscivorous fish on age-0 fish: spatial and temporal variability in a biomanipulated lake (Bautzen reservoir, Germany)

Predation by perch (Perca fluviatilisL.) and zander (Stizostedion luciopercaL.) on their new-hatched fish was studied in the littoral and pelagic zone in the biomanipulated Bautzen reservoir (Germany). Sampling was conducted from the middle of May to the middle of August in 1997. To investigate predation, we compared the littoral and pelagic zone, because the littoral zone could provide a refuge area for age-0 fish. This study focused on: 1. timing of predation, 2. selectivity of predation and 3. feeding pressures. In the littoral zone, age-1 perch fed first on age-0 percids at the beginning of June, when age-0 percids reached a mean length of 20 mm. Age-2 and older perch and zander started feeding on age-0 percids in the middle of June in both habitats. At this time, age-0 percids reached a mean length of 30 mm. In both habitats, species selective feeding on age-0 perch and age-0 zander was found. Most of the sampling time zander fed selectively on their own descendants. In general, mean lengths of age-0 fish found in the predator stomachs were smaller than those in situ. The strongest decrease of age-0 fish abundance started in both areas before percids began to feed on age-0 fish. In the middle of June, predation pressure on age-0 fish was higher in the pelagic zone, whereas in July and August it was higher in the littoral zone. After a strong initial decline due to unknown factors, age-0 fish abundance was controlled by piscivores. Predation started at the time when age-0 fish gape sizes were big enough to feed on large daphnids. As age-1 perch started first feeding on age-0 fish, at high densities they could be an important source of early mortality on age-0 zooplanktivores. This would be advantageous for the daphnid population in two ways, because the efficiency of two different predators would be reduced. Age-0 fish are consumed by age-1 perch, and age-1 perch feed on age-0 fish and not on daphnids. Consequently, the feeding behaviour of age-1 perch could be a key to achieve a stable long-term biomanipulation.[PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
