Military seeks recruits
The starting yearly salary for unskilled non-commissioned members is $30,000, but if you are semi-skilled or skilled in the area you're planning to go into then the salary will increase appropriately. For officers, the starting salary is $42,000 a year, but as with non-commissioned members, the salary will increase with the amount of skill you have in the area you're going into. There's a local detachment, the Rocky Mountain Rangers, which you can contact at 837-3242 or 837-4221 if you are interested in joining. However, you must be younger than 19 to join. Scouts is also an accepted alternative, but Cadets is much more helpful in securing a position. One important thing to note is that the Cadets do not recruit members into the Canadian Forces. They are simply a youth group that bears similarities to the military.

Students concerned by future climate changes
Warmer, wetter winters and drier, hotter summers. It's hard not to notice what's changing in terms of climate, and that has local youth thinking about the future. \"A lot of trees will die,\" says RSS student Lars Boggild. \"It's not necessarily a matter of oxygen, it's a matter of what the trees protect and what they do for the animals.\" Both of them are also worried about the tree population they fear will decline, what with logging, insect pests, and the effects of the climate changing.

Kids crave cell phones
\"I use it to text my friends,\" says Keysha Jackson, a student at RSS. A few other teenagers interviewed said much the same thing, and it seems that they prefer text messaging over talking. This may be because text messaging is completely silent. But it could also be because it's something more recent and trendy. As well, text messaging costs money without a special, more expensive plan, so older teenagers with jobs are the ones who are more able to afford text messaging.
