Turn Them Loose
According to a team of researchers writing in the Journal of Pediatrics, \"What has declined specifically is children's freedom to engage in activities that involve some degree of risk and personal responsibility away from adults\" (Gray et al., 2023). The authors attribute the alarming rates of anxiety and depression among kids (at least in part) to \"a decline over decades in opportunities for children and teens to play, roam, and engage in other activities independent of direct oversight and control by adults.\" Other forms of less-supervised activity also contribute to kids' mental health, according to the researchers, such as getting to and from school alone or with other children, or-for teenagers-holding a job.
Fake out
Nine-year-old Ben and other members of the Bobcats co-ed soccer team improve their skills and begin to win, especially after Ben learns the importance of concentration from his older brother and finally masters the fake out.
\Where Is the Story?\
The \"literature\" he referred to consisted entirely of comic books and sports magazines. The study (Sun et al., 2023) evaluated cognition, mental health, and other factors in more 10,000 US kids from diverse backgrounds. [...]on top of this, we found significant evidence that it's linked to important developmental factors in children, improving their cognition, mental health, and brain structure, which are cornerstones for future learning and well-being\" (University of Cambridge, para. 11). Lewis and Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. led the massive march from Selma to Montgomery in March of 1965, completing the journey Lewis had started earlier in the month.
The ball hogs
Nine-year-old Ben, a natural athlete and member of the Bobcats co-ed soccer team, wants to overcome his inexperience and prove himself on the field, but his obnoxious teammate, Mark, keeps hogging the ball.
Game-day jitters
With help from his older brother Larry, nine-year-old Ben learns to cope with his nervousness about the Kickers League playoffs. Includes \"Ben's top ten tips for soccer players.\"
