The Major Powers in East Asia

The East Asian region has done well economically due to the active role of the private sector in the last two decades, but from the politico-security aspect it is faced with uncertainties. Up until now, the role and presence of the U.S. military in the East Asian region has been the anchor of peace and stability since World War II, but today many are asking whether and in which way this role will continue. While bilateral alliances, especially the U.S.-Japan one, have been the main instrument for the U.S. presence and are still in place (being dependent on the air and naval forces of the Seventh Fleet), the political attention and presence of the U.S. as the only global superpower, and the main regional power, has declined in relative terms.

The Sep 11 attacks and global reactions to them show that neither isolationism nor unilateralism will suffice in the fight against terrorism. Thus even in military matters, the US will need the assistance of various allies when taking specific actions. In the policymaking field, different coalitions have already begun to emerge to tackle a variety of political, intelligence, law enforcement and financial issues.
