The southern part of the West African Craton includes the Baoulé-Mossi Domain, the world’s premier Paleoproterozoic gold province (~10,000 metric ton gold endowment). Structural, metamorphic, and geochronological data suggest gold mineralisation occurred during three episodes that span much of the Eoeburnean and Eburnean orogenic cycles. Eoeburnean orogenic and rare skarn-hosted gold deposits formed between ca. 2200 and 2135 Ma during repeated episodes of volcanism, plutonism, and shortening, which thickened the Paleoproterozoic crust. Early Eburnean orogenic and placer gold deposits formed between ca. 2110 and 2095 Ma during inversion, metamorphism, and subsequent oblique shortening of intra-orogenic basins filled after ca. 2135 Ma. This episode of mineralisation terminated when the Baoulé-Mossi Domain docked with the Archean Kénéma-Man Domain at ca. 2095 Ma. Late Eburnean orogenic and less common intrusion-related gold deposits formed between ca. 2095 and 2060 Ma during strike-slip to oblique-slip tectonics, post-collisional high-K plutonism and crustal reworking across the western and southern Baoulé-Mossi Domain. Eoeburnean gold deposits include ca. 10 % of the gold endowment of the Baoulé-Mossi Domain, whereas the Early Eburnean and Late Eburnean deposits include ca. 50–70% and 20–40%, respectively. Here, we highlight the favourable confluence of accretion-collision tectonics, involving juvenile crust formation as well as protracted magmatic, metamorphic, and deformation histories that resulted in diachronous gold events spread over at least 100 myr throughout the Baoulé-Mossi Domain.

A Novel Methodological Approach to Simulating the Growth of Photosynthetic Organisms Using Long-Term Meteorological Sequences: A Case Study of Microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris)

The growth of photosynthetic organisms requires specific ranges of temperature and photosynthetically active radiation. Monitoring and maintaining these conditions is technically difficult, especially in outdoor cultures. In such cases, a typical meteorological sequence can be a useful tool for estimating the growth of photosynthetic organisms. This study proposes a new methodology based on long-term meteorological sequences to simulate the growth of photosynthetic organisms. This case study addresses microalgae growth simulation (Chlorella vulgaris) in Riosequillo in the north of the Madrid region (Spain) for the four seasons of the year. Then, these estimates are compared with the observed results of an experimental culture of microalgae in domestic wastewater. The results also show strong agreement with the probability distribution function of the daily biomass concentration, giving the best results for typical summer and spring meteorological sequences. The methodology seems to confirm the representativeness of typical meteorological sequences, allows for the identification of the most likely production scenarios for project feasibility analyses, and may be applied to decision-making processes.

Combination of Models to Generate the First PAR Maps for Spain

This work addresses the development of a PAR model in the entire territory of mainland Spain. Thus, a specific model is developed for each location of the study field. The new PAR model consists of a combination of the estimates of two previous models that had unequal performances in different climates. In fact, one of them showed better results with Mediterranean climate, whereas the other obtained better results under oceanic climate. Interestingly, the new PAR model showed similar performance when validated at seven stations in mainland Spain with Mediterranean or oceanic climate. Furthermore, all validation slopes ranged from 0.99 to 1.00; the intercepts were less than 3.70 μmol m−2 s−1; the R2 were greater than 0.988, while MBE was closer to zero percent than −0.39%; and RMSE were less than 6.21%. The estimates of the PAR model introduced in this work were then used to develop PAR maps over mainland Spain that represent daily PAR averages of each month and a full year at all locations in the study field.

Numerical simulation applied to agriculture or wastewater treatment (WWT) is a complementary tool to understand, a priori, the impact of meteorological parameters on productivity under limiting environmental conditions or even to guide investments towards other more relevant circular economic objectives. This work proposes a new methodology to calculate Typical Meteorological Sequences (TMS) that could be used as input data to simulate the growth and productivity of photosynthetic organisms in different biological systems, such as a High-Rate Algae Pond (HRAP) for WWT or in agriculture for crops. The TMS was established by applying Finkelstein-Schafer statistics and represents the most likely meteorological sequence in the long term for each meteorological season. In our case study, 18 locations in the Madrid (Spain) region are estimated depending on climate conditions represented by solar irradiance and temperature. The parameters selected for generating TMS were photosynthetically active radiation, solar day length, maximum, minimum, mean, and temperature range. The selection of potential sequences according to the growth period of the organism is performed by resampling the available meteorological data, which, in this case study, increases the number of candidate sequences by 700%.

The aims of this work are to present an analysis of quality solar radiation data and develop several hourly models of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) using combinations of radiometric variables such as global horizontal irradiance (GHI), diffuse horizontal irradiance (DHI), and direct normal irradiance (DNI) from their dimensionless indices atmospheric clearness index (kt), horizontal diffuse fraction (kd), and normal direct fraction (kb) together with solar elevation angle (α). GHI, DHI, and DNI data with 1-minute frequencies in the period from 2016 to 2021 from CEDER-CIEMAT, in a northern plateau, and PSA-CIEMAT in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, were used to compare two locations with very different climates according to the Köppen—Geiger classification. A total of 15 multilinear models were fitted and validated (with independent training and validation data) using first the whole dataset and then by kt intervals. In most cases, models including the clearness index showed better performance, and among them, models that also use the solar elevation angle as a variable obtained remarkable results. Additionally, according to the statistical validation, these models presented good results when they were compared with models in the bibliography. Finally, the model validation statistics indicate a better performance of the interval models than the complete models.

Prevalence, Antimicrobial Susceptibility, and Resistance Genes of Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase-Producing Escherichia coli from Broilers Sold in Open Markets of Dakar, Senegal

Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-Ec) poses a significant public health concern due to its widespread prevalence and resistance to multiple antibiotics. This study aimed to assess the prevalence, resistance profile, and carriage of ESBL-encoding genes in ESBL-Ec isolates from broilers in two markets of Dakar, Senegal. Sampling over a one-year period revealed that 61.7% of broilers carried ESBL-Ec in their cecum. Antibiotic susceptibility testing of 186 ESBL-Ec isolates showed high resistance to β-lactam antibiotics, including ampicillin, ticarcillin, and third-generation cephalosporins. Notably, all isolates were susceptible to imipenem. Multidrug resistance was frequent, with 91.4% of the isolates displaying this phenotype. Comparison between the two markets revealed variations in resistance to quinolones. PCR analysis detected blaCTX-M genes in all isolates, with blaCTX-M-1 being the most prevalent subgroup. Additionally, blaTEM and blaOXA genes were found in 26.3% and 2.7% of isolates, respectively, while no blaSHV genes were detected. Combinations of ESBL genes were common, with blaCTX-M15-blaTEM being the most frequent. These findings highlight the widespread prevalence of ESBL-Ec in broilers from Dakar markets, indicating a potential risk of transmission to humans through the food chain. Effective surveillance and intervention strategies are crucial to mitigate the spread of antimicrobial resistance in humans and animals.

Predictability of Intra-Seasonal Descriptors of Rainy Season over Senegal Using Global SST Patterns

Seasonal forecasting of the rainfall characteristics in Sahel is of crucial interest in determining crop variability in these countries. This study aims to provide further characterization of nine rainfall metrics over Senegal (Onset, cessation, LRS, CDD, CDD7, CDD15, NR90p, NR95p, NR99p) and their response to global SST patterns from 1981 to 2018. The Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station (CHIRPS) dataset and the Hadley Centre Global Sea Ice and Sea Surface Temperature (HadISST) were used. The results showed strong spatio-temporal variability with a pronounced south–north gradient for all metrics. The earliest onset was observed in the south of the country from 4 July and the latest onset in the north from 9 August. Since 2012, a new regime is observed with an increase in both long dry spells and extreme wet events. Furthermore, SST forcing has shown that the North tropical Atlantic and the East Equatorial Pacific are better able to explain the interannual variability of the intraseasonal descriptors. However, the prediction of metrics is earlier for the most remote basin (Pacific) compared to the most local basin (Atlantic). These results have implications for the seasonal forecasting of Sahel’s intraseasonal variability based on SST predictors, as significant predictability is found far from the beginning of the season.

Nosocomial infections are very common in African hospitals, particularly in neonatal units. These infections are most often caused by bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp and Staphylococcus spp. Salmonella strains are rarely involved in nosocomial infections. Here, we report the first description of S. Grumpensis in neonatal infections in Senegal. Seventeen Salmonella strains were isolated from hospitalized infants' stool samples. The following resistance phenotype was described in strains: AMXRTICRCFR FOXRCFXRCTXRCAZRIMPSATMRNARNORRCIPRTMRGMRTERSXTR. All isolates were susceptible to imipenem, 15 out of 17 produced an extended spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL). blaOXA-1, blaSHV-1, blaTEM-1, blaCTX-M1 genes were detected in strains 8, 13, 5 and 8, respectively. blaCTX-M1 sequencing revealed the presence of blaCTX-M-109. Thirteen of the 17 Salmonella Grumpensis strains were analyzed by PFGE. These 13 isolates belonged to a single pulsotype and were genotypically identical. This is the first report of neonatal S. Grumpensis infections in Senegal, and the first report of blaCTX-M-109 in the genus Salmonella.
