Impact of Windows and Daylight Exposure on Overall Health and Sleep Quality of Office Workers: A Case-Control Pilot Study
Study Objective: This research examined the impact of daylight exposure on the health of office workers from the perspective of subjective well-being and sleep quality as well as actigraphy measures of light exposure, activity, and sleep-wake patterns. Methods: Participants (N = 49) included 27 workers working in windowless environments and 22 comparable workers in workplaces with significantly more daylight. Windowless environment is defined as one without any windows or one where workstations were far away from windows and without any exposure to daylight. Well-being of the office workers was measured by Short Form-36 (SF-36), while sleep quality was measured by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). In addition, a subset of participants (N = 21; 10 workers in windowless environments and 11 workers in workplaces with windows) had actigraphy recordings to measure light exposure, activity, and sleep-wake patterns. Results: Workers in windowless environments reported poorer scores than their counterparts on two SF-36 dimensions—role limitation due to physical problems and vitality—as well as poorer overall sleep quality from the global PSQI score and the sleep disturbances component of the PSQI. Compared to the group without windows, workers with windows at the workplace had more light exposure during the workweek, a trend toward more physical activity, and longer sleep duration as measured by actigraphy. Conclusions: We suggest that architectural design of office environments should place more emphasis on sufficient daylight exposure of the workers in order to promote office workers’ health and well-being. Visual Guidance and Egg Collection Scheme for a Smart Poultry Robot for Free-Range Farms
Free-range chicken farming allows egg-laying hens to move freely through their environment and perform their natural behavior, including laying her eggs. However, it takes time to gather these eggs manually, giving rise to high labor costs. This study proposes a smart mobile robot for poultry farms that can recognize eggs of two different colors on free-range farms. The robot can also pick up and sort eggs without damaging them. An egg feature extraction method with automatic thresholding is employed to detect both white and brown eggs, and a behavior-based navigation method is applied to allow the robot to reach the eggs while avoiding obstacles. The robot can move towards the position of each egg via visual tracking. Once the egg is within the collection area of the robot, it is gathered, sorted and stored in the tank inside the robot. Experiments are carried out in an outdoor field of size 5 m × 5 m under different climatic conditions, and the results showed that the average egg recognition rate is between 94.7% and 97.6%. The proposed mobile poultry robot is low in production cost and simple in operation. It can provide chicken farmers with automatic egg gathering on free-range farms.
Assessment of patient safety culture among healthcare employees in major Eswatini public hospitals
This primary study assessed the patient safety culture in five major public government hospitals in Eswatini. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among hospital employees using the validated Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC) developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The average positive patient safety culture (PSC) score was 43%. The highest-rated composite was “teamwork within units” (75%), while the lowest-rated was “staffing” (25%). All 11 PSC composites scored below the 2018 AHRQ survey benchmarks. These findings underscore the need for significant improvements in PSC across Eswatini’s hospitals. Additionally, the study revealed a lack of robust patient safety reporting systems in the five hospitals, which hinders efforts to address safety issues and reduce medical errors.
Institutional factors associated with the incidence rates of central line-associated bloodstream infection in California community hospitals
Central line-associated bloodstream infections are frequent, deadly, costly, and preventable. The study aimed to explore how some hospital-related characteristics were associated with incidence rates of central line-associated bloodstream infections reported by community hospitals in California from January to December 2019. This retrospective, cross-sectional study used combined data from records submitted to the California Department of Public Health, California Open Data Portal, the California Health and Human Services Open Data Portal, and the American Hospital Directory by community hospitals in California with central line-associated bloodstream infections in 2019. Results showed that CLABSIs are significantly associated with bed capacity, health care system affiliation, ownership, and hospital accreditation status ( p < 0.0001). CLABSI remains a relevant threat to patient safety and quality of care, even more so in the community hospital setting. Understanding if a relationship exists between institutional factors and CLABSI rates might better prepare leaders in healthcare organizations to reduce HAIs.
Natal origin and migration pathways of Mekong catfish (Pangasius krempfi) using strontium isotopes and trace element concentrations in environmental water and otoliths
To improve our knowledge of the migration pathway of a highly threatened fish species along the Mekong River, strontium isotope ratios ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) and 18 trace element concentrations were measured in the water and in the otoliths of an anadromous catfish, Pangasius krempfi , to infer its natal origin and potential migration pathways. Water was sampled at 18 locations along the mainstream, tributaries and distributaries of the Mekong River. To check for accuracy and precision, measurements of the 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios and trace element concentrations were then compared in two laboratories that use different analytical methods. Differences in trace element concentrations between locations were not significant and could not, therefore, be used to discriminate between migration pathways. However, the Mekong mainstream, tributaries and distributaries could all be discriminated using Sr isotopes. The 87 Sr/ 86 Sr profiles recorded in P . krempfi otoliths showed that there were three contingents with obligate freshwater hatching and variable spawning sites along the Mekong mainstream, from Phnom Penh (Cambodia) to Nong Khai (Thailand) or further. After hatching, the fish migrated more or less rapidly to the Mekong Delta and then settled for most of their lifetime in brackish water. Spawning habitats and migration routes may be threatened by habitat shifts and the increasing number of hydropower dams along the river, especially the contingents born above Khone Falls (Laos). The conservation of P . krempfi , as well as other migratory fish in the Mekong River, requires agreements, common actions and management by all countries along the Mekong River. This study highlighted the importance of using both Sr/Ca and 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios to understand life history of anadromous fishes as the 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratio in the water was shown to be less effective than the Sr/Ca ratio in identifying movements between different saline areas.
MicroRNA-378 promotes cell survival, tumor growth, and angiogenesis by targeting SuFu and Fus-1 expression
MicroRNAs are single-stranded RNA of 18-24 nt expressed endogenously that play important roles in cancer development. Here, we show that expression of miR-378 enhances cell survival, reduces caspase-3 activity, and promotes tumor growth and angiogenesis. Proteomic analysis indicates reduced expression of suppressor of fused (Sufu), a potential target of miR-378, which was confirmed in vitro and in vivo. Expression of a luciferase construct containing the target site in Sufu was repressed when cotransfected with miR-378. Transfection of a Sufu construct reversed the effect of miR-378, suggesting an important role for miR-378 in tumor cell survival. We also discovered that miR-378 targets Fus-1. Expression of luciferase constructs harboring the target sites in Fus-1 was repressed by miR-378. Fus-1 constructs with or without its 3' UTR were also generated. Cotransfection experiments showed that the presence of miR-378 repressed Fus-1 expression. Suppression of Fus-1 expression by siRNA against Fus-1 enhanced cell survival. Transfection of the Fus-1 construct reversed the function of miR-378 in cell survival. Our results suggest that miR-378 transfection enhanced cell survival, tumor growth, and angiogenesis through repression of the expression of two tumor suppressors, Sufu and Fus-1.
Edge Computing of Online Bounded-Error Query for Energy-Efficient IoT Sensors
Since the power of transmitting one-bit data is higher than that of computing one thousand lines of code in IoT (Internet of Things) applications, it is very important to reduce communication costs to save battery power and prolong system lifetime. In IoT sensors, the transformation of physical phenomena to data is usually with distortion (bounded-error tolerance). It introduces bounded-error data in IoT applications according to their required QoS2 (quality-of-sensor service) or QoD (quality-of-decision making). In our previous work, we proposed a bounded-error data compression scheme called BESDC (Bounded-Error-pruned Sensor Data Compression) to reduce the point-to-point communication cost of WSNs (wireless sensor networks). Based on BESDC, this paper proposes an online bounded-error query (OBEQ) scheme with edge computing to handle the entire online query process. We propose a query filter scheme to reduce the query commands, which will inform WSN to return unnecessary queried data. It not only satisfies the QoS2/QoD requirements, but also reduces the communication cost to request sensing data. Our experiments use real data of WSN to demonstrate the query performance. Results show that an OBEQ with a query filter can reduce up to 88% of the communication cost when compared with the traditional online query process.
Factors Related to Nurse Satisfaction with Supervisor Leadership
The satisfaction of nurses with the leadership of their supervisors exerts a positive association with their job satisfaction. This study identified factors associated with nurse satisfaction with supervisor leadership and developed a model of causal relationships based on social exchange theory. A satisfaction scale was developed to measure how nurses felt about the leadership of their supervisor, which also assessed the validity and reliability using a cross-sectional descriptive survey questionnaire administered to nurses working in a teaching hospital in northern Taiwan. A total of 607 valid questionnaires were returned. Structural equation modeling was used to test the theoretical model of this study. Only questions that were scored above 3 were included in the scale. A total of 30 questions were placed under seven constructs of this scale upon the assessment of content validity. The results indicate that satisfaction with shift schedules, educational training, and internal communication exerted direct, significant, and positive associations with satisfaction with the supervisor leadership. Furthermore, satisfaction with policies and guidelines exerted direct, significant, and positive associations with satisfaction with internal communication and exerted indirect associations with satisfaction with supervisor leadership through internal communication. In particular, satisfaction with shift schedules and internal communication were most significantly associated with satisfaction with supervisor leadership. The results of this study offer a reference for hospital management and emphasize focusing on the arrangement of nurse shifts in all departments. The establishment of diverse communication channels can enhance the degree of nurse satisfaction with supervisor leadership.
Workplace violence, work characteristics, and seniority levels among nurses: a cross-sectional study
Background Workplace violence (WPV) is a widespread phenomenon in healthcare systems and an increasingly severe occupational health and safety issue. This study aimed to analyze the prevalence of WPV among novice and senior nurses and to explore the associations between this factor and various types of workplace violence, workplace characteristics, and professional seniority levels while simultaneously identifying relevant risk factors. Methods The participants in this cross-sectional descriptive survey study were recruited via a convenience sampling approach between February and May 2021. The sample ultimately included 1000 full-time registered nurses who were recruited from a medical center in Taiwan. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect participants’ experiences of workplace violence. A variety of data were collected, including demographic characteristics, work characteristics, WPV experiences, job control, workplace justice, and psychological job demands. Descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression were used in this research. Results Nearly 50% of the nurses experienced at least one episode of workplace violence in the last 12 months. Among the types of workplace violence, verbal violence had the highest prevalence, followed by physical violence. High psychological job demands and low workplace justice were associated with workplace violence. After adjustment for demographic characteristics and psychosocial work conditions, novice nurses were more likely to experience workplace violence, particularly psychological violence, than senior nurses were. Conclusions Workplace violence is prevalent among Taiwanese nurses, in which context novice nurses are particularly vulnerable. Addressing high levels of psychological job demands and enhancing workplace justice can help mitigate workplace violence. Effective policies are needed to empower nurses and reduce violence. Impact Our findings highlight the persistence of workplace violence among nurses, indicating a need to promote healthier work environments. These results offer insights that nurse leaders and policymakers can use to improve workplace characteristics by promoting work autonomy, establishing a safe culture, and ensuring effective violence management, thereby potentially mitigating nurses’ exposure to workplace violence and reducing their turnover intentions.
Cost-Effective Fitting Model for Indoor Positioning Systems Based on Bluetooth Low Energy
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is a positioning technology that is commonly used in indoor positioning systems (IPS) such as shopping malls or underground parking lots, because of its low power consumption and the low cost of Bluetooth devices. It also maintains high positioning accuracy. Since the cost of BLE itself is low, it has now been used in larger environments such as parking lots or shopping malls for a long time. However, it is necessary to configure a large number of devices in the environment to obtain accurate positioning results. The most accurate method of using signal strength for positioning is the signal pattern-matching method. The positioning result is compared through a database with the overheads of time and labor costs, since the amount of data will be proportional to the size of the environment for BLE-IPS. A planar model that conforms to the signal strength in the environment was generated, wherein the database comparison method is replaced by an equation solution, to improve various costs but diminish the positioning accuracy. In this paper, we propose to further replace the planar model with a cost-effective fitting model to both save costs and improve positioning accuracy. The experimental results demonstrate that this model can effectively reduce the average positioning error in distance by 31%.
