Systematic review and meta-analysis of the relationship between sleep disorders and suicidal behaviour in patients with depression
Background The potential link between sleep disorders and suicidal behaviour has been the subject of several reviews. We performed this meta-analysis to estimate the overall association between sleep disorders and suicidal behaviour and to identify a more specific relationship in patients with depression. Methods A systematic search strategy was developed across the electronic databases PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library from inception to January 1, 2019 for studies that reported a relationship between sleep disorders and suicidal behaviour in depressed patients. The odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to measure the outcomes. Heterogeneity was evaluated by Cochran’s Q test and the I 2 statistic. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was adopted to evaluate the methodological quality of each of the included studies, and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to assess the quality of the evidence. We calculated the overall association between sleep disorders and suicidal behaviour and estimated more specific categories, including insomnia, nightmares, hypersomnia, suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, and completed suicide. Results A total of 18 studies were included in this study. Overall, sleep disorders were closely related to suicidal behaviour in patients with depression (OR = 2.45 95% CI: 1.33 4.52). The relatively increased risks of sleep disorders with suicidal ideation, suicide attempt and completed suicide ranged from 1.24 (95% CI: 1.00 1.53) to 2.41 (95% CI: 1.45 4.02). Nightmares were found to be highly correlated with the risk of suicidal behaviour (OR = 4.47 95% CI: 2.00 9.97), followed by insomnia (OR = 2.29 95% CI: 1.69 3.10). The certainty of the evidence was rated as very low for the overall outcome and the major depression subgroup and was rated as low for the depression subgroup. Conclusions This meta-analysis supports the finding that sleep disorders, particularly nightmares and insomnia, increase the risk of suicidal behaviour in depressed patients. Considering that all included studies were observational, the quality of the evidence is rated as very low. More well-designed studies are needed to confirm our findings and to better explain the mechanisms by which sleep disorders aggravate suicidal behaviour in depressed patients.
Application of machine learning models in predicting physical literacy in 4–6-year-old children: A comprehensive analysis of individual and family factors
Physical literacy in children has become a significant research topic in both education and psychology. Recently, machine learning, as a cutting-edge AI technology, has started to play a crucial role in these fields. This study aimed to apply machine learning models to predict physical literacy in 4–6-year-old children and to comprehensively analyze the influence of individual and family factors. We evaluated the physical literacy of 1,734 children aged 4–6 and systematically examined the impact of both individual factors (such as gender, age, body type, sedentary behavior, screen time, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), sleep duration, and sleep quality) and family factors (such as parents’ education level, occupation, exercise frequency, support for children’s physical activity, household annual income, and family exercise environment) using various machine learning models. Results showed that the ensemble learning model achieved the best performance in predicting physical literacy, with an AUC of 86.2%. Among all predictive factors, mother’s exercise frequency, family exercise environment, and time spent on MVPA were identified as the most important. These findings provide new insights into enhancing children’s physical literacy and underscore the critical role of family environment and lifestyle in its development.
The relationship between family socioeconomic status and the young children’s number sense development: The mediating role of parent-child activities
This study examines the relationship between family socioeconomic status, parent-child activities, and young children’s digital development. Using the Family SES questionnaire, the parent-child activities questionnaire, and the 5 to 6 year old children’s number sense development scale as research instruments, 314 young children ( M = 70.42, SD = 3.47). The results show that: (1) Family Socioeconomic Status can significantly positively predict the young children’s number sense development; (2) Parent-child activities play a partial mediating role in the relationship between family socioeconomic status and the young children’s number sense development. This study provides specific guidelines and recommendations for improving the young children’s number sense development.
Comparative analysis of semaglutide induced adverse reactions: Insights from FAERS database and social media reviews with a focus on oral vs subcutaneous administration
Compared to alternative weight-loss strategies and medications, semaglutide stands out for its convenience and efficacy, resulting in a significant increase in prescriptions and raising public safety concerns. Furthermore, the safety profiles of its oral and subcutaneous formulations require further examination. Our goal is to investigate the potential safety risks associated with semaglutide by analyzing data from the FAERS database and social media. Additionally, we aim to compare the adverse drug reaction (ADR) signals between the oral and subcutaneous administration routes of semaglutide. We collected semaglutide-related reports from the FAERS database spanning Q1 2018 to Q2 2023, and patient reviews on WebMD and AskaPatient up to 20 July 2023. Following data extraction and cleansing, we conducted descriptive analyses of demographic characteristics. Subsequently, we calculated adverse drug reaction (ADR) signals using the reporting odds ratio (ROR). We identified 19,289 and 422 semaglutide-related adverse drug events (ADEs) reported in the FAERS database and online patient reviews, respectively. Gastrointestinal disorders emerged as the most commonly reported System Organ Class (SOC) in both datasets. Predominant Preferred Terms (PTs) included nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Serious outcomes constituted 3.07% and 2.25% of all cases for oral and subcutaneous semaglutide, respectively. At the SOC level, gastrointestinal disorders accounted for 30.19% of total ADEs in oral semaglutide, slightly surpassing the 27.76% in subcutaneous semaglutide. The median onset for gastrointestinal PTs was 4 days in both oral (Q1: 1, Q3: 32) and subcutaneous (Q1: 1, Q3: 35) formulations. Noteworthy, new serious adverse event (AE) signals were identified, including hemorrhagic diarrhea (ROR: 3.69), hepatic pain (ROR: 4.20), abnormal hormone levels (ROR: 6.51), and pancreatic failure (ROR: 36.34) in subcutaneous semaglutide, and Dupuytren's contracture (ROR: 46.85) in oral semaglutide. Our study delineates the safety profile of semaglutide using data from the FAERS database and social media. And identified novel ADR signals specific to oral and subcutaneous forms of semaglutide.
A Smart Grid AMI Intrusion Detection Strategy Based on Extreme Learning Machine
The smart grid is vulnerable to network attacks, thus requiring a high detection rate and fast detection speed for intrusion detection systems. With a fast training speed and a strong model generalization ability, the extreme learning machine (ELM) perfectly meets the needs of intrusion detection of the smart grid. In this paper, the ELM is applied to the field of smart grid intrusion detection. Aiming at the problem that the randomness of input weights and hidden layer bias in the ELM cannot guarantee the optimal performance of the ELM intrusion detection model, a genetic algorithm (GA)-ELM algorithm based on a genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed. GA is used to optimize the input weight and hidden layer bias of the ELM. Firstly, the input weight and hidden layer bias of the ELM are mapped to the chromosome vector of a GA, and the test error of the ELM model is set as the fitness function of the GA. Then, the parameters of the ELM intrusion detection model are optimized by genetic operation; the input weight and bias, corresponding to the minimum test error, are selected to improve the performance of the ELM model. Compared with the ELM and online sequential extreme learning machine (OS-ELM), the GA-ELM effectively improves the accuracy, detection rate and precision of intrusion detection and reduces the false positive rate and missing report rate.
67 THE EFFECT OF IMMERSIVE CULTURAL HERITAGE TOURISM ON THE REHABILITATION OF SCHIZOPHRENIC PATIENTS
Background Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that affects the quality of life of millions of people worldwide. Traditional treatment methods rely on drug therapy and psychological intervention, but in recent years, non-drug therapies are increasingly gaining attention, especially those that can stimulate patients’ interest and promote the recovery of emotional and social functions. Immersive cultural heritage tourism is a new therapy, but its application in the rehabilitation of schizophrenic patients has not been fully explored. Therefore, based on previous research trends on cultural therapy and schizophrenia rehabilitation, this study aims to explore the potential effects of immersive cultural heritage tourism on the rehabilitation of schizophrenia patients, and provide new ways and ideas for the treatment of this disease. Methods The study was designed as a randomized controlled trial (RCT). A total of 80 patients with schizophrenia were randomly divided into experimental group and control group. Patients in the experimental group participated in immersive cultural heritage tourism activities for 12 weeks, 3 times a week, including historical sites, traditional handicraft villages, etc. During the activity, professional guides gave detailed explanation and interactive guidance, and patients were encouraged to participate in cultural experience activities such as traditional handicraft production and folk performance viewing. The control group received conventional hospital rehabilitation treatment. Before and after the intervention, Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Social Disability Screening Schedule, SDSS and self-rated life satisfaction scale were used to evaluate the two groups of patients. Results The evaluation results of various scales in the experimental group and the control group are shown in Table 1. Compared with baseline, the total score of PANSS in the experimental group decreased significantly after intervention, from 85 to 65, indicating that psychiatric symptoms were alleviated. The total score of SDSS dropped from 35 to 25, indicating improved social functioning. Life satisfaction scale score increased from 30 to 45. The total score of PANSS, SDSS and life satisfaction scale changed little in the control group before and after intervention. Discussion According to the research results, immersive cultural heritage tourism has a positive effect on the rehabilitation of schizophrenic patients, which can effectively reduce symptoms, improve social function and improve life satisfaction. The practical significance of the study is that it opens up a new model for the rehabilitation treatment of schizophrenia, and such activities can be considered in the clinical rehabilitation plan. Future studies may further explore the targeted effects of different types of cultural heritage tourism projects on patients with different subtypes of schizophrenia, optimize the design of tourism activities and intervention duration, so as to better play the role of immersive cultural heritage tourism in the rehabilitation of schizophrenia. Li+ Conduction in a Polymer/Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 Solid Electrolyte and Li-Metal/Electrolyte Interface
The solid oxide electrolyte Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP) with a NASICON structure has a high bulk ionic conductivity of 10−4 S cm−1 at room temperature and good stability in the air because of the strong P5+-O2− covalence bonding. However, the Ge4+ ions in LAGP are quickly reduced to Ge3+ on contact with the metallic lithium anode, and the LAGP ceramic has insufficient physical contact with the electrodes in all-solid-state batteries, which limits the large-scale application of the LAGP electrolyte in all-solid-state Li-metal batteries. Here, we prepared flexible PEO/LiTFSI/LAGP composite electrolytes, and the introduction of LAGP as a ceramic filler in polymer electrolytes increases the total ionic conductivity and the electrochemical stability of the composite electrolyte. Moreover, the flexible polymer shows good contact with the electrodes, resulting in a small interfacial resistance and stable cycling of all-solid-state Li-metal batteries. The influence of the external pressure and temperature on Li+ transfer across the Li/electrolyte interface is also investigated.
Corrosion and Interfacial Contact Resistance of NiTi Alloy as a Promising Bipolar Plate for PEMFC
Titanium (Ti) is generally considered as an ideal bipolar plate (BPP) material because of its excellent corrosion resistance, good machinability and lightweight nature. However, the easy-passivation property, which leads to increased interfacial contact resistance (ICR) and subsequently decreased cell performance, limits its large-scale commercial application in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In this paper, we proposed a NiTi alloy prepared by suction casting as a promising bipolar plate for PEMFCs. This NiTi alloy exhibits significantly decreased ICR values (16.8 mΩ cm2 at 1.4 MPa) compared with pure Ti (88.6 mΩ cm2 at 1.4 MPa), along with enhanced corrosion resistance compared with pure nickel (Ni). The superior corrosion resistance of NiTi alloy is accredited to the nobler open circuit potential and corrosion potential, coupled with low corrosion current densities and passive current densities. The improved ICR can be interpreted by the existence of high-proportioned metallic Ni in the passive film, which contributes to the reduced capacitance characteristic of the passive film (compared with Ti) and enhances charge conduction. This work provides a feasible option to ameliorate BPP material that may have desirable corrosion resistance and ICR.
Topical and intravenous administration of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells in patients with diabetic foot ulcer and peripheral arterial disease: a phase I pilot study with a 3-year follow-up
Background Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a serious chronic complication of diabetes mellitus that contributes to 85% of nontraumatic lower extremity amputations in diabetic patients. Preliminary clinical benefits have been shown in treatments based on mesenchymal stem cells for patients with DFU or peripheral arterial disease (PAD). However, the long-term safety and benefits are unclear for patients with both DFU and PAD who are not amenable to surgical revascularization. Methods In this phase I pilot study, 14 patients with PAD and incurable DFU were enrolled to assess the safety and efficacy of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (hUC-MSC) administration based on conservative treatments. All patients received topical and intravenous administrations of hUC-MSCs at a dosage of 2 × 10 5 cells/kg with an upper limit of 1 × 10 7 cells for each dose. The adverse events during treatment and follow-up were documented for safety assessments. The therapeutic efficacy was assessed by ulcer healing status, recurrence rate, and 3-year amputation-free rate in the follow-up phase. Results The safety profiles were favorable. Only 2 cases of transient fever were observed within 3 days after transfusion and considered possibly related to hUC-MSC administration intravenously. Ulcer disclosure was achieved for more than 95% of the lesion area for all patients within 1.5 months after treatment. The symptoms of chronic limb ischaemia were alleviated along with a decrease in Wagner scores, Rutherford grades, and visual analogue scale scores. No direct evidence was observed to indicate the alleviation of the obstruction in the main vessels of target limbs based on computed tomography angiography. The duration of rehospitalization for DFU was 2.0 ± 0.6 years. All of the patients survived without amputation due to the recurrence of DFU within 3 years after treatments. Conclusions Based on the current pilot study, the preliminary clinical benefits of hUC-MSCs on DFU healing were shown, including good tolerance, a shortened healing time to 1.5 months and a favorable 3-year amputation-free survival rate. The clinical evidence in the current study suggested a further phase I/II study with a larger patient population and a more rigorous design to explore the efficacy and mechanism of hUC-MSCs on DFU healing. The validity of the Physical Literacy in Children Questionnaire in children aged 4 to 12
Background Given the growing evidence on the health benefits associated with physical literacy (PL), it is necessary to develop sound measures to assess the levels of PL in children. The Physical Literacy in Children Questionnaire (PL-C Quest) is the first self-report pictorial-based scale to assess children’s perceived PL. It has good validity and reliability in Australian children aged 7 to 12 years, but little is known in younger children and in other cultural contexts. The aim of this study was to examine the validity and reliability in an expanded age range. Methods A total of 1,870 Chinese children (girls, n  = 871; 46.6%), aged 4 to 12 years ( M  = 8.07 ± 2.42) participated in validity testing. Structural equation modeling with the Weighted Least Squares with Mean and Variance approach was used to assess construct validity. The hypothesized theoretical model used the 30 items and four hypothesized factors: physical, psychological, social and cognitive capabilities. Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis was used to assess sex and age group (4–6 years, 7–9 years and 10–12 years) measurement invariance. Internal consistency analyses were conducted using polychoric alpha. A random subsample ( n  = 262) was selected to determine test–retest reliability using Intra-Class Correlations (ICC). Results All items except one (moving with equipment–skateboarding) loaded on sub-domains with λ > 0.45. The hypothesized model had a good fit (CFI = 0.954, TLI = 0.950, RMSEA = 0.042), with measurement equivalence across sex and age groups separately. Internal consistency values were good to excellent (overall: α = 0.94; physical: α = 0.86; psychological: α = 0.83; social: α = 0.81; cognitive: α = 0.86). Test–retest reliability was adequate to excellent (overall: ICC = 0.90, physical: ICC = 0.86, psychological: ICC = 0.75, social: ICC = 0.71, cognitive: ICC = 0.72). Conclusion The Chinese version of the PL-C Quest is valid and reliable for testing the self-reported PL of Chinese children aged 4 to 12. This study provides the first evidence of validity for this tool in children aged 4–6 years and also evidence that the PL-C Quest would be a meaningful instrument to assess PL in Chinese children.
