Major and trace-element geochemistry of Late Cretaceous clastic rocks in the Jitai Basin, southeast China
Major, trace and rare earth element (REE) geochemistry of the late Cretaceous lower Zhoutian Formation from the Jitai Basin of Southeast China were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis to infer the provenance of the sediments and to reconstruct the palaeoenvironment and palaeoclimate. The wide range of Sr/Cu ratios point to a fluctuating palaeoclimate, and the negative correlation between the FeO/MnO and Al 2 O 3 /MgO ratios and the Sr/Cu ratio indicates that the late Cretaceous climate during the lower Zhoutian Formation in the Jitai Basin can be divided into two parts. The lower part experienced two cooling periods, whilst the upper part was dominated by warm-humid climate. Mostly corresponding trends of the B/Ga, Sr/Ba and Sr/Cu ratios show that the salinity changed consistently with the late Cretaceous climate during the lower Zhoutian Formation in the Jitai Basin. During the lower part, the salinity changed from salt water to fresh/brackish water. In the upper part, water was mainly fresh/brackish, and there were many changes from fresh/brackish water to salt water. The relatively stable Ni/Co, V/Cr, V/(V + Ni) and Ce/Ce* data indicate a long period of oxic conditions. The La-Th-Sc, Th-Sc-Zr/10 and La/Th-Hf data of the silt- and sandstones of the lower Zhoutian Formation show that its provenance was mainly a mixture of felsic upper crust sediments and older sedimentary rocks.

Utilization of pre-existing competent and barren quartz veins as hosts to later orogenic gold ores at Huangjindong gold deposit, Jiangnan Orogen, southern China
Most, if not all, orogenic gold deposits form during the late stages of deformation. In some cases, there is barren pre-mineralization hydrothermal alteration which may be part of a single progressive hydrothermal event or a temporally distinct event relative to deposition of gold. At the Huangjindong orogenic gold deposit in the Jiangnan Orogen of southern China, there are two phases of vein generation, the earlier of which is largely barren. Structural analysis, petrography, mineralogy, and in situ laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) gold mapping of different generations of gold-bearing sulfides reveal the relationship between different phases of hydrothermal alteration and quartz veins. Pre-existing barren and brittle quartz veins, which are controlled by tight folds and thrust faults, provide favorable competent hosts for later overprinting by gold-bearing ore-bearing fluids that infiltrated during ongoing reverse-sinistral fault movement. These overpressured fluids caused hydrofracturing to complete brecciation of segments of the earlier quartz veins and associated pre-existing breccias, with deposition of auriferous quartz-sulfide veins and breccia cements or matrices within them. Although fluid inclusion data are non-definitive, fluid pressure fluctuations are interpreted to have resulted in phase separation within the ore fluid which was primarily responsible for destabilization of gold complexes and deposition of native gold with other invisible gold-bearing ore-related sulfides formed by sulfidation reactions, in hydrofractures and breccia matrices. Thus, competent barren quartz veins in fold/thrust belts may locally host superimposed gold mineralization and provide favorable targets for gold resources.

Process and Mechanism of Gold Mineralization at the Zhengchong Gold Deposit, Jiangnan Orogenic Belt: Evidence from the Arsenopyrite and Chlorite Mineral Thermometers
The Zhengchong gold deposit, with a proven gold reserve of 19 t, is located in the central part of Jiangnan Orogenic Belt (JOB), South China. The orebodies are dominated by NNE- and NW- trending auriferous pyrite-arsenopyrite-quartz veins and disseminated pyrite-arsenopyrite-sericite-quartz alteration zone, structurally hosted in the Neoproterozoic epimetamorphic terranes. Three stages of hydrothermal alteration and mineralization have been defined at the Zhengchong deposit: (i) Quartz–auriferous arsenopyrite and pyrite; (ii) Quartz–polymetallic sulfides–native gold–minor chlorite; (iii) Barren quartz–calcite vein. Both invisible and native gold occurred at the deposit. Disseminated arsenopyrite and pyrite with invisible gold in them formed at an early stage in the alteration zones have generally undergone syn-mineralization plastic-brittle deformation. This resulted in the generation of hydrothermal quartz, chlorite and sulfides in pressure shadows around the arsenopyrite and the formation of fractures of the arsenopyrite. Meanwhile, the infiltration of the ore-forming fluid carrying Sb, Cu, Zn, As and Au resulted in the precipitation of polymetallic sulfides and free gold. The X-ray elements mapping of arsenopyrite and spot composition analysis of arsenopyrite and chlorite were carried out to constrain the ore-forming physicochemical conditions. The results show that the early arsenopyrite and invisible gold formed at 322–397 °C with lgf(S2) ranging from −10.5 to −6.7. The crack-seal structure of the ores indicates cyclic pressure fluctuations controlled by fault-valve behavior. The dramatic drop of pressure resulted in the phase separation of ore-forming fluids. During the phase separation, the escape of H2S gas caused the decomposition of the gold-hydrosulfide complex, which further resulted in the deposition of the native gold. With the weakening of the gold mineralization, the chlorite formed at 258–274 °C with lgf(O2) of −50.9 to −40.1, as constrained by the results from mineral thermometer.

Pulmonary PMCT angiography by right ventricle cardiac puncture: a novel, promising approach for investigating pulmonary thromboembolism
Forensic scholars are paying more attention to postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) and PMCT angiography (PMCTA), which are gradually becoming effective and practical methods in forensic practice. However, few studies have focused on the application of PMCTA to cardiac ventricular puncture—especially of the right ventricle. In this article, we introduce a pulmonary PMCTA approach by right ventricle cardiac puncture and its potential value in fatalities from pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE). The procedure was performed on 11 males and 6 females. PMCT was performed first; then a biopsy core needle was used for percutaneous puncture of the right ventricle under CT guidance. About 400 mL of contrast media was injected at a rate of 50 mL/8 s, followed by CT scanning. Visualization of the pulmonary artery contrast filling was complete in 9 cadavers, and the pulmonary arteries showed significant filling defects in 8 subjects. Unlike in clinical practice, the phenomenon of postmortem coagulation sometimes occurs in the vascular lumina after death. Therefore, the results of these 8 cases can only suggest or be highly suspicious of death from PTE. Then autopsy and histopathological examination confirmed that 4 of the above 8 patients were diagnosed with PTE; the remaining 4 had postmortem clot including chicken fat clot in the pulmonary artery. Pulmonary PMCTA approach is a simple, convenient, and effective method for the visualization of the pulmonary artery, which can be used as an effective auxiliary tool to identify PTE in forensic practice. It will also provide technical support to further investigate PTE imaging characteristics.
Pd@Ag Nanosheets in Combination with Amphotericin B Exert a Potent Anti-Cryptococcal Fungicidal Effect
Silver nanoparticles have received considerable interest as new \"nanoantibiotics\" with the potential to kill drug-resistant microorganisms. Recently, a class of new core-shell nanostructures, Pd@Ag nanosheets (Pd@Ag NSs), were created using deposition techniques and demonstrated excellent inhibitory effects on various bacteria in vitro. In this study, we evaluated the antifungal activity of Pd@Ag NSs against common invasive fungal pathogens. Among these organisms, Cryptococcus neoformans complex species was most susceptible to Pd@Ag NSs, which exhibited potent antifungal activity against various molecular types or sources of cryptococcal strains including fluconazole-resistant isolates. The anticryptococcal activity of Pd@Ag NSs was significantly greater than fluconazole and similar to that of amphotericin B (AmB). At relatively high concentrations, Pd@Ag NSs exhibited fungicidal activity against Cryptococcus spp., which can likely be attributed to the disruption of cell integrity, intracellular protein synthesis, and energy metabolism. Intriguingly, Pd@Ag NSs also exhibited strong synergistic anti-cryptococcal fungicidal effects at low concentrations in combination with AmB but exhibited much better safety in erythrocytes than AmB, even at the minimal fungicidal concentration. Therefore, Pd@Ag NSs may be a promising adjunctive agent for treating cryptococcosis, and further investigation for clinical applications is required.
Isolated iliac cryptococcosis in an immunocompetent patient
GSE108534) showed an enrichment of a primary immunodeficiency phenotype, such as T cell signaling pathways, the hematopoietic cell lineage, the nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-ĸB) signaling pathway, antigen processing and presentation, and natural killer cell-mediated cytotoxicity (S3 Fig). Discussion Skeletal cryptococcosis is usually secondary to direct inoculation during trauma or hematogenous dissemination [3]. Since the patient had multiple obsolete pulmonary lesions and a high blood cryptococcal antigen titer but no history of trauma, we speculated that the agent originated from primary pulmonary lesions. PCR fingerprinting revealed that all isolates grouped into the VNI genotype [6]. [...]an environmental carrier (bird droppings) of C. neoformans might be the ultimate source of skeletal infection in this case. All these factors were associated with host immune functions essential for fungal control and containment, such as phagocytic activity and T cell responses [14,15]. [...]subclinical immune impairment might be a non-negligible factor in apparently healthy patients with cryptococcosis.
